PAGE TWO SAINT CYRIL OF JERUSALEM FEBRUARY 2ND 2020
From The Desk of Father MacFrom The Desk of Father Mac On February 2nd, 40 days after Christmas, the Church cele-brates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, which this year falls on a Sunday. This feast has its roots in the late fourth century, at which time a woman named Etheria made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Her journal was discov-ered in 1887, providing us with a glimpse of liturgical life there. Among the celebrations Etheria describes is the Feast of the Epiphany, which was the celebration of Christ’s birth in the Eastern Church, and the procession in honor of his Presentation in the Temple 40 days later. Under the Mosaic Law, a woman was considered ritually “unclean” for 40 days after giving birth, at which point she was to present herself to the priests and offer sacrifice for her “purification.” Contact with anyone who had been in-volved with birth or death excluded a person from Jewish worship. This feast emphasizes Jesus’ first appearance in the Temple more than Mary’s purification. The observance spread throughout the Western Church in the fifth and sixth centuries. Because the Church in the West celebrated Jesus’ birth on December 25, the Presenta-tion was moved to February 2, 40 days after Christmas. At the beginning of the eighth century, Pope Sergius inaugu-rated a candlelight procession; at the end of the same cen-tury the blessing and distribution of candles which contin-ues to this day became part of the celebration, giving the feast its popular name: Candlemas. In the Gospel for today’s feast, Jesus is welcomed in the temple by Simeon and the widow Anna. They embody Israel in their patient expectation; they acknowledge the infant Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah. Early references to the Roman feast dub it the feast of Saint Simeon, the old man who burst into a song of joy at the coming of the Messiah, which the Church still sings at day’s end. The Feast of the Presentation is a proclamation of Christ — Messiah and Priest, Lord and Savior. He is the light who came into this world to dispel sin and darkness. For this reason, traditionally at least since the seventh century, candles have been blessed at Mass this day that will be used throughout the year, hence coining the term “Candlemas.” As we consider the feast of the Presentation, we remember that our parents presented us at church for our baptism. We were dedicated to God, and given the name, “Christian.” We, too, received a lit candle from the paschal candle, at which the priest said, “You have been enlight-ened by Christ. Walk always as a child of the light and keep the flame of faith alive in your heart. .” Therefore, as a light, each of us must bear witness to Our Lord. We must be the beacon that guides others to Christ.

Discovering a More Meaningful Life & Faith
“Often people attempt to live their lives back-wards: they try to have more things, or more
money, in order to do more of what they want so that they will be happier. The way it actually
works is the reverse. You must first be who you really are, then, do what you need to do, in order
to have what you want.”

PRESENTATION OF THE LORD PAGE THREE
ST CYRIL OF JERUSALEM PARISH STEWARDSHIP
JANUARY 26TH
“…they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord...” LUKE 2:22 How seriously do you take being a Catholic? Is “being Catho-lic” something I just do when I attend Sunday Mass or attend one of my parish functions? It’s easy to be Catholic then, it’s harder to be Catholic when I am out in the world. Would someone recognize your Catholic Stewardship by the way you act, dress and talk? How do you present yourself to the Lord and to others?
Thank you for your generosity

SAFEGUARDING THE CHILDREN DID YOU KNOW?
THE IMPORTANCE OF MAKING RULES As parents, we want our children to see us as their allies and teachers, not just the people who lay down the law. But sometimes, rules are more effective — rules are simple and easy to remember, and leave no room for error. When it
comes to your child’s safety, rules are critical. And when it comes to your child’s body, rules can help them under-stand how to protect themselves from predators. Estab-lishing rules about who can see or touch their bodies is an important part of preventing child sexual abuse. For more information, request a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Sometimes a rule is more effective than a discussion” from http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.
