In 1993, Mike McClellan formed Mobile Weather Team

, Inc., an on-site weather service designed to

provide advanced storm warning for directors and organizers of outdoor events.

Our on-site weather services are used throughout the year at more than 165

PGA Tour events across the country. In addition, our company works several

events for the USGA (including all the majors), the LPGA, the PGA of

America and other majors. While professional golf is a major market for our company, we also work races, air shows, town festivals, and the largest state fair in North America, The State

Fair of Texas.

By combining professional meteorologists and state-of-the-art weather forecasting and prediction

equipment, our staff at Mobile Weather Team®, Inc. provides advance warning of any type of weather situation at outdoor events. Utilizing real-time

Doppler radar, lightning and satellite information tailored to each individual event, our staff

meteorologists are able to identify and track weather that may adversely affect event operations.

Lightning prediction and detection are essential services provided by

Mobile Weather Team®, Inc. Lightning, the

second leading cause of weather-related deaths in the U.S., is monitored by

on-site tracking and prediction systems to

provide the most current information to help

organizers avoid dangerous situations.

We do more than just track lightning and storms. Behind the scenes we

are providing the necessary weather information that will ensure a smooth

running event.

HERE’S SOME OF WHAT WE DO

The entire event revolves around the weather. Advance planning is the key for….

NASCAR Officials and Race Teams: They use our pinpoint forecasts of temperature, dew point, humidity, strong winds, frost, fog, rain and even snow to determine track conditions each day. This advance weather information will help prevent unexpected delays and help prevent unnecessary suspensions due to rain and other weather hazards, which in turn, cause delayed finish times.

TV (producers & crew): Not only will we help in stormy situations with advance warning of rain and lightning but we also help the blimp pilots, mast operators, tower camera crews and on-air crews in the event of gusty winds, heavy rain and fog. Behind the scenes, TV utilizes our information while planning for each day’s coverage, rain or shine! With our Mobile Weather Van on-site, we provide real-time weather conditions for use on-air in their TV broadcasts.

The entire event revolves around the weather. Advance planning is the key for….

Event Directors: 1.) Will use our weather forecasts to make critical decisions on delays, suspensions and cancellations due to bad weather.

2.) Merchandising decisions can be made in advance to increase revenue and avert problems.

Example: The 2000 LPGA State Farm Rail Classic, perfectly sunny skies and excessive heat would have caused the normal bottled water supply to be depleted on the first day of the tournament. A potential problem was averted because the Mobile Weather Team was on-site forecasting the excessive heat and humidity to continue. Organizers were able to prepare and bring in more water before they ran out.

Event Directors continued:3.) Unusually wet weather in dry climates, unusually cold weather in warm climates or any sudden change in the weather in the middle of a race can lead to big profits if you are prepared. Extra rain gear for wet weather. Wind shirts, sweaters, gloves and warm beverages for cold weather. Last minute scrambling can be avoided.

4.) Parking: very heavy rain can cause major parking problems. You can avoid those headaches by knowing the weather in advance.

5.) Outdoor functions: avoid unexpected weather disasters by knowing the weather in advance.

Vendors/Sponsors: Will benefit from advance warning of high winds, rain and lightning to close down tents and move people and merchandise indoors to prevent damage or injury.

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH TOUR WEATHERMAN - STEWART WILLIAMS

Golf Magazine

May 2001

As a Mobile Weather Team meteorologist, I watch the skies for the PGA Tour wherever each week's event is being played. I arrive on Tuesday to set up before Wednesday's pro-am, and stay on-site each day from 6 a.m. until the final group signs its scorecard.

I'm usually hidden from view, sharing a construction trailer with the Tour's communications staff. With two laptops, one connected to satellite pictures, the other to the National Lightning Detection Network, and our Thorguard lightning prediction system [pictured], I can track weather disturbances nationwide. I anchor Thorguard to the roof of the trailer, and its sensors pick up electrical charges in the clouds and on the ground. The receiver tells me the chance of lightning within 12 miles, and the chance within two miles. As the percentages rise, I update Tour officials. By the time there's an 80 percent chance of lightning within 12 miles, play has been suspended. The Tour gives people at least 30 minutes' notice before a storm hits to seek shelter.

So what do I do on clear, sunny days? I get out, walk around, and watch some golf. But I don't stray too far - just in case.
