DIE Lydenburg Mashishing Sakekamer en die AHI se entrepreneurskursus wat verlede week op Lydenburg aangebied was deur Dr. Johan Louw, was ’n reuse sukses. Die 25 sakemanne en vroue en aspirant sakemanne en vroue het die kursus terdeë geniet en sien nou beter kans vir die sakewêreld. Dié vyfdag kursus is moontlik gemaak deur die plaaslike sakekamer en is geborg deur die AHI. Daar word beoog om aanstaande jaar weer so ’n kursus aan te bied.Andre Coetzee - Foto’s Gerda Whitehorn.
Beste Lydenburgse Besighede: DIE Lydenburg / Mashishing sakekamer loods vanjaar ’n kompetisie om die beste besighede in verskeie kategorieë te vereer. Die kompetisie is oop vir enige lid van die publiek. Kyk gerus solank na die meegaande doelstellings, kategorieë en die kriteria wat u moet gebruik as u beoordeel en die reëls van die kompetisie.Waaraan u basies moet dink is dinge soos vriendelike, flinke en uitnemende kwaliteit
diens in elke kategorie. Inskrywingsvorms sal later in die Highlands Panorama Nuus verskyn en sal voorsiening maak vir elke kategorie, ’n lys kriteria en u gaan ’n punt uit 10 toeken vir elke kriteria item teenoor die besigheid wat u as die beste in ’n betrokke kategorie beskou. DIE Pos. Die Kwêvoël. Die Daller. Middelburg Observer. Die Kormorant. Zoutpansberger. Hierdie is net ’n paar gemeenskapskoerante op plekke soos Thabazimbi, Groblersdal, Makhado (Louis Trichaardt) en ander dorpe soos ons s’n. Met my deurlees van dié en ander koerante die afgelope week, kom ek tot die besef dat ons dorpe op die platteland dieselfde probleme het. Motorongelukke as gevolg van vrot
paaie en ander roekelose bestuurders, eindelose padwerke, rioolaanlegte wat nie werk nie, munisipale stortingsterreine waar alle hoop op orde vervaag het, moord, korrupsie, diefstal en elke ding. Storie op storie van verval, ANC munisipaliteite wat nie werk nie, slaggate, krag wat gereeld af is (ek sit en skryf hierdie storie terwyl die kragopwekker loop), ondrinkbare water en rou riool in die strate.Om sulke stories te kry en te skryf is nie moeilik of ’n kuns nie. Trouens, ons is baie moeg daarvoor. En midde in die gemors het ek hoop. Ons by die Highlands Panorama Nuus moet bietjie harder werk
om mooi stories te soek. Jy moet kop krap om mense se suksesse te soek. Baie mense wonder waarom ons nie dié of daardie storie in die koerant dra nie. Die antwoord is hierbo. Dit is nie nuwe of vars nuus nie. Nog ’n korrupsie storie, so?Natuurlik is dié stories belangrik. Ons moet nie ophou druk uitoefen nie. Ons moet die publiek ingelig hou en die ellendige bestuur van ons dorpe en infrastruktuur aan die kaak stel. Maar ons gemeenskap is bietjie sat daarvoor. Daarom dat ek liewer skryf oor ou Pieter (skuilnaam) se seuntjie Hennie (skuilnaam) wat eerste staan in die klas. Dit laat minstens vir Pieter, Hennie, die juffrou, die skoolhoof, die departementshoof en hulle aanhangsels en vir my en my personeel, goed voel. Ons simpatie gaan dié week met die families van verskeie motorongeluk slagoffers. Sterkte.

Ek is nafi oor voetgangers wat ne weet dat 'n rooi lig STOP beteken nie, en ek is nafi oor anties wat nie stoptekens gehoorsaam nie en my telkens amper in my moer in ry wanneer ek dit waag om 'n entjie te stap.Ek is nafi oor ek 'n nuwe voertuig by handelaar A koop en dit gereeld daar laat diens, net om drie jaar later te hoor dat ek nie my voertuig kan inruil op 'n nuwer model nie, aangesien daar nie juis 'n mark is vir my huidige enetjie nie. VERSKEIE lesers het my die afgelope week gekontak om te kla oor beide die provinsiale sowel as die munisipale verkeersbeamptes wat motors van die paaie af trek. Almal is dit eens dat hierdie tipe aksies goed is en nodig i s o m o n p a d w a a r d i g e v o e r t u i e , o n g e l i s e n s i e e r d e m o t o r s e n dronkbestuurders van die paaie af te kry en ons bedank die verkeersowerhede daarvoor.Wat die meeste egter dwars in die krop steek, is die keuse van plekke waar motoriste afgetrek word. In die meeste gevalle kies die owerhede plekke waar dit gevaarlik is om mense af te trek, bv. by sperstrepe, by spoedhobbels, of die teerpad se rande is uitgetrap en skerp en verwoes bande, ens.Ons wil dus ’n vriendelike beroep op ons verkeersowerhede doen om sulke plekke met sorg te kies, sodat daar genoeg veilige plek is om af te trek, dit veilig is om weer op die pad te klim en dat die padrande nie motors sal beskadig nie.Ons bedank graag ons verkeersmense vir hulle werk om gevaarlike voertuie en bestuurders van ons paaie af te haal.

Hoe waar is dit tog nie dat almal van ons 'n duistere boek is en dat ons soms voel ons mense ken, maar nooit weet watse diepe stryd elke persoon voer nie. Min mense in Nelspruit ken nie vir Johan Breytenbach, van Rooikat Wholesale Liquors en sy vrou Bessie wat 'n onderwyseres is by Laerskool Laeveld nie. Tog is daar min van ons wat besef hoe hierdie twee mense en hulle families smag na hoop en antwoorde vir klein Carli.'n Groep van die Hervormde kerk het nadat hulle Bessie se briefie gelees het besluit om 'n Orrelfees te reel ten bate van Carli, en dit sommer n jaarlikse instelling te maak vir kindersorg oor die algemeen. WORLD Rabies Day: Awareness is the Best Defense against Rabies.
thSeptember 28 is again World Rabies Day to raise awareness and understanding about the importance of rabies prevention.Sterkspruit Veterinary Clinic is supporting this initiative against the oldest and deadliest disease known to mankind.Rabies is a preventable disease that still kills 55,000 people needlessly each year.Rabies is a viral disease that can be transmitted to animals and humans. The disease is usually transmitted by a bite but exposure may also occur through contamination of broken skin or mucous membranes with saliva from an infected animal. It is possible that virus shedding in the saliva of infected animals could take place before the symptoms of rabies are seen. Following infection, there is an extremely variable incubation period ranging from weeks to years prior to onset of symptoms.· Rabies is primarily a disease of children, who are particularly at risk from this terrible disease, due to their close contact with dogs- the major global source- according to Dr. Debbie Briggs, Executive Director of the Global Alliance for Rabies Control. Children are more likely to suffer multiple bites and scratches to the face and head, both of which carry a higher risk of contracting rabies. Children are often unaware of the danger that dogs transmit rabies and may not tell their parents when a bite, lick, or scratch has occurred.Nervous symptoms of the disease develop, rabies is fatal to both animals and humans. The good news is that rabies is easily preventable. Vaccination prior to possible exposure is a crucial part of health management of domestic animals, and is the single most important factor in rabies prevention.Rabies prevention starts with the animal owner. Protect yourself, your pet and your community by taking animals to be vaccinated. This is compulsory for all dogs and cats in South Africa in terms of the Animal Diseases Act. Moving your dog or cat across a national or provincial boundary in South Africa without it being accompanied by a valid certificate of rabies vaccination is illegal. In a recent South African study, it was found that nearly three quarters of all dog bite wounds were caused by a dog which was known to the victim, but not owned by the victim. The message is clear. If your neighbours dog is regularly loose on the streets, it would be prudent to insist that your neighbour proves that his (or her) wandering dogs are vaccinated.In 2012, there were 834 confirmed cases of rabies in animals in South Africa. Statistics are not provided on how many suspected rabies cases tested negative, but it is certain that every year thousands of suspect dogs are needlessly sacrificed for testing because their owners failed to have them vaccinated.Avoid contact with strange dogs, and don't be tempted to approach and touch wild animals which appear to be tame.If you are bitten, wash bite wounds with soap and water and seek medical attention immediately. If your pet is bitten, consult your veterinarian immediately.Prompt and appropriate treatment after being bitten and before the disease develops can stop rabies infection and/or prevent the disease in humans and animals. YOU might imagine a resto-mod Jaguar Mk2 by Ian Callum would fall under the auspices of the JLR’s new Special Vehicle Operations (SVR) unit but this stunning example is his own car in fact and an independent project done in conjunction with Jaguar specialists and restorers, Classic Motor Cars Limited (CMC). Based in Shropshire, CMC (and Callum) spent 18 months working on the rebuild project, which takes a Mk2 and gives it a thoroughly modern makeover. But the modifications are not only under the skin. Lowered by 30mm, wider than normal, and with a meaner overall look, the sports saloon sits on 17-inch split rim alloys.
The bodywork has been given a race-inspired makeover with intakes, slashes and four louvres down the side helping create a low-pressure area for airflow through the engine bay. Sacrilege perhaps, but Jag doesn’t have access to a modern straight six and there’s no way you’ll find a German BMW engine in there. So, under the bonnet isn’t the aforementioned in-line arrangement but rather a tuned 4.3-litre V8 from a Jaguar XK, which exhausts through a twin central pipe effort at the back. Drive is channelled through a five-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive. It’s a restomod hotrod.
The suspension has been reengineered where the front incorporates uprated coil springs, roll bar and wishbone bushes, adjustable dampers and solid subframe mountings repositioned to improve anti-dive characteristics. The independent rear suspension now includes uprated coil springs, blade control wishbones, outboard disc brakes, an anti-roll bar and adjustable dampers. The biggest dilemma facing the classic car enthusiast is reliability, so Callum has ensured the rest of his car has been suitably modernised to avoid any unwanted excursions to the side of the road. There is even power steering and a Clarion multimedia ICE system with 16cm flip-out touchscreen.
At the unveiling of his Mk2 Callum said: ‘This is a very personal statement. A long held notion that, although the Mark 2 has always been a beautiful car, it could be even more exciting in shape and performance. Whilst maintaining the purity of the car’s form, I wanted to add a number of modern twists to the design. Simplification and clarity was my objective.’

HYUNDAI Automotive South Africa officially opened a commercial vehicle assembly plant on the East Rand as part of a multi-million rand investment in its Commercial Vehicle division in the local automotive market. "The opening of this assembly plant forms an ideal platform from which to strengthen our business strategy, both in terms of commercial market growth and sustainability, as well as an increasing commitment and investment in the South African economy," says Wade Griffin, director of Commercial Vehicles at Hyundai Automotive SA.
"We believe that there are strong opportunities through investment and local assembly to capitalise on for our business. This substantial investment will also help to improve local skills and to create jobs in an economy that is in dire need of such opportunities." The rationale behind the Semi-Knocked-Down (SKD) assembly plant in Apex, the industrial area of Benoni, was largely driven by a long-term strategy to grow Hyundai's share in the South African commercial vehicle market, to be more competitive and to increase Hyundai's investment in the country's economy. The initial aim is to produce 50 units a month, focusing specifically on the Hyundai HD65 and HD72 trucks.
At this stage most of the trucks produced in the plant will be distributed in the South African market, but Hyundai Automotive SA is investigating options to export to markets in the Sub-Saharan region of Africa. Of the vehicles assembled in the Benoni plant, 20% will be exported to neighbouring Southern African countries such as Botswana and Namibia as part of the immediate plans. Hyundai Automotive SA established the factory by buying an existing plant from Imperial Holdings as part of a R110 million investment in the Commercial Vehicles division of Hyundai in South Africa.
"We did careful research to establish the economic viability and sustainability of such a SKD assembly plant. Hyundai Commercial Vehicles is a division of Hyundai Automotive SA - one of the main players and biggest sellers in the South African automotive market. This investment in our Commercial Vehicle division enables us to be more aggressive and competitive due to the zero import duty as an incentive for local assembly of trucks," says Griffin.
Stanley Anderson, marketing director of Hyundai Automotive SA, says it is important to note that the company's investment reaches beyond the monetary aspect. "We have already employed over 30 staff, with the vision of increasing this to around 60 people. By creating these intitial 30 or so jobs, we are directly improving the lives of more than 230 people. "However, there are at least an additional 10 people that can gain employment as a result of the development of this plant, if we consider our current service partners. And further job security too, if you include other suppliers in terms of logistics, maintenance, cleaning, security and information technology services."
Hyundai has brought in a number of trained engineers from Hyundai Motor Company's Commercial Vehicle division in Korea to assist with the local training and development of staff to ensure that best practices are followed in the assembly process. From here, the Hyundai Training Centre at the head office of Hyundai Automotive SA will be responsible for ongoing training. "We have already produced the first trucks from the assembly plant. The local production of HD65 and HD72 trucks will give us a lot of momentum to increase our present 3% share in the medium
commercial vehicle market," says Griffin.
An increase in local content of the vehicles that are assembled in the plant will bring further savings, a more competitive business model and create further jobs in the local economy. "We are obviously at an early stage in the development of the local operation, but we are already examining the expansion of locally produced parts for our assembly line," says Griffin. "We chose the premises in Benoni for two reasons: There was an existing infrastructure and suitable buildings and storage areas to run such a plant; and it is situated in the economical hub of South Africa - Gauteng - where there is a big demand for products such as our HD65 and HD72 trucks." Die bagasieruim is gemiddeld maar kan baie groot verstel met opvou agtersitplekke. Agterste beenruimte is bietjie knap met die voorsitplekke tot agter gestel. Die stuurwiel is met leer bedek, plat onder vir maklike in- en uitklim en kan in-en-uit en op-en-af verstel. Dit beskik oor al die kontroles vir togbeheer, klankstelsel, telefoon ensomeer.Wat die Cross Polo van sy mindere boeties onderskei is die feit dat dit 32mm hoër is as die standaard Polo reeks. Dit loop ook op 17 duim allooiwiele, maar die bandprofiel is bietjie laag vir ons treurige paaie.So, hoe gedra die Cross Polo hom op die pad. In een woord, asemrowend! Dit loop ’n barshou, versnel beter as meeste 1.6 liters en behou spoed teen heuwels. Remme is baie goed en die veerstelsel is effe ferm, maar beheer die motor uitstekend. Dit voel veilig, selfs op spoed en op ons slegte paaie. Die 6-spoed ratkierie is kort en skakel seepglad. Pedale werk lekker lig. Die stuurwiel is nie baie lewendig nie en terugvoer is so-so, maar dit is rigtingvas en akkuraat. Die draaisirkel is lekker kort en dit parkeer maklik.Brandstofverbruik en enjinlewe behoort goed te wees, aangesien die enjinomwentelinge in sesde teen 120 km/u net 2 500 is (3 000 @ 140 en 3 300 @ 160 in sesde).Die motor voel tipies VW, solied, stewig en bougehalte lyk uitstekend. Ek het gehou van die binnafwerking met materiale wat sag is as jy aan dit raak (in teenstelling met die harde plastieke van goedkoper, mindere motors). Ek het baie gehou van die uitstekende kraglewering, hantering en algemene werkverrigting. Ek het nie gehou van die plat profiel bande nie.Is dit beter as die Opel Corsa Turbo? Die Cross Polo is mooier, al die ruite is elektries en die spesifikasievlakke binne is beter. Die gehalte gevoel is min of meer dieselfde. Die Corsa (1.4T) trek beter, stuur beter en rem beter, maar ek dink die Cross Polo gaan dalk net-net meer aanklank by kopers vind. Dit is my keuse as nuwe motor vir ma. Andre Coetzee.

IN press events spanning three continents, Mazda has revealed the fourth generation Mazda MX-5 Roadster. Sharpened up stylistically but without losing its intrinsic, fleet-footed, MX-5-ness; we think it looks rather snazzy. Mazda say the latest model features Kodo (soul of motion) design for the body work and efficient Skyactiv-G engines under the skin. Thanks to clever weight reduction in the rear-wheel drive Skyactiv-Chassis, the new model weighs up to 100kg less (meaning it’ll weigh in the region of 1000-1050kg) than the outgoing model due to aluminium parts, has a lower centre of gravity and weighs close to that of the 1989 original.
With lightweight sports car rivals like the Toyota 86 closing in over the years to carve up the Mazda’s once-exclusive piece of turf, Mazda understand this is one of the most significant relaunches in the MX-5’s history and want to focus on Jinba Ittai or ‘rider-and-horse-as one’. This refers to the new one’s enhanced responsiveness, agility and driving fun.
Mazda clearly believe smallness is a virtue and this is the smallest MX-5 yet at 3915mm long. 105mm shorter, 15mm trimmed wheelbase, and 20mm lower than the third generation model, the only thing that’s grown is the width, which is no bad thing for a sports car. Weight distribution is said to be exactly 50:50 and the four-cylinder engines are pushed as far back in the engine bay to make this possible.
Regarding the engines, there is no official word but rumour centres round a potential range of 1.5-litre or 2.0-litre direct-injection propulsion which provide 85kW/144Nm and 114kW/200Nm in other Mazda products. With normal-sized 195/50 R16 tyres at the rear it won’t need skip loads of power to be frisky, either. We’ll have to judge whether Mazda pulled off their promise of improved Jinba Ittai when the MX-5 launches in the third quarter of 2015.

JUST a year after Nissan reintroduced the Almera in South Africa, the company’s already decided to update it with revised looks and increased standard specification.
On the outside, the new Almera boasts redesigned headlamps, new chrome grille, and new front bumper. The profile has been improved with the fitment of 15-inch alloys and the rear has a redesigned bumper with parking sensors.
The cabin benefits from a new fabric with contrasting stitching and a new audio system layout integrated with an updated facia. The updated multifunction steering wheel now features telephony controls for the Bluetooth system as well.
The updated Almera range continues to incorporate two models – the 1,5 Acenta 5-speed manual and the 1,5 Acenta 4-speed automatic – both powered by a 73 kW/134 N.m petrol engine. Safety equipment across the range includes ABS with EBD and BAS, auto-locking doors, three-point seat belts for all five seats, dual front airbags and Isofix child seat anchors.
The Almera is available as standard with a 3-year/60 000 km service plan and 3-year/ 100 000 km warranty. Service intervals are 15 000 km.
