Mission change from Talon I to AFID/training MC-130E is highly modified for the SOF mission. MC-130E is a VIETNAM ERA AIRFRAME  In the initial stages of Iraqi Freedom, the 711 SOS had aircrew members that also had flown in Vietnam. Mission is a night time mission.   In winter combat, it's not uncommon to go 3 weeks or more without seeing the light of day.   Training missions are 4 hours long.   Combat missions can be as long as 10-14 hours by one crew.   Combat specialty is precision landing without navigation aids in remote mountainous terrain during bad weather.(They fly when no one else can)   One of the first reserve units(if not the first) called for combat after 9/11   Extremely high demand aircraft   Recently won Lt Gen William H. Tunner award for medivac mission during a snowstorm that shutdown virtually all airfields in Afghanistan   Also recently won the Brig Gen Ross Hoyt award for the highest risk MC-130 mission for OEF in 2009.   711 SOS crews have won the General Tom E Marchbanks award on several occasions since 9/11 for heroism during aerial flight   919 OG(I think it was OG, may have been wing) won the Gallant Unit Citation (that's a big deal)   The following numbers represent individual awards for the 711 SOS members:   3 Silver Stars   76 Distinguished Flying Crosses (51 for VALOR)   6 Bronze Stars for VALOR   585 Air medals (35 for VALOR)   86 Aerial Achievement Medals
