My flower choice was white roses with pearl beading woven through. Classic and simple.

The flower choice of my wedding bouquet was the calla lily, because I think it is and elegant and sophisticated flower. Plus it blended very well with the color theme of my wedding, which was

gold and ivory.

SOLANLLY TAPANES↓MARKET INGIn my wedding bouquet the flowers I chose were Freedom red roses and white orchids. I loved the simplicity and the elegance that the roses gave with the white orchids giving contrast to the bouquet.

←CARA GARDNERSALESMy wedding bouquet included Rio Bikini yellow roses and Rio white lisianthus. Everyone loved the color contrast and all my bridesmaids were wearing light yellow dresses.

Spring is certainly the season for weddings, and the floral industry takes full advantage of this. However, weddings can also be a constant stream of revenue all year long, so it pays to learn ways to maximize your wedding business now and throughout the coming months. Here are a few tips:

1. Keep on Top of Wedding Trends Being in the know about the latest wedding floral trends can help you become a go-to wedding florist in your area. For 2019, some of these trends include color blocking; linear, “stretching petal” arrangements; flowers worn as hair accessories, wraps and arm cuffs; using just one floral type for everything from bouquets to arrangements to headpieces; and romantic indoor “gardens”, filled with lush blooms. Learn everything you can about the latest trends and show that knowledge on your website and across social media.

2. Know and Promote Your Unique Value Savvy marketers know that the way to stand out from the competition is to continuously promote what makes you special and different. What can you bring to a wedding that other florists can’t? Maybe you’re a budget-friendly florist, or perhaps a florist specializing in elegant, luxurious weddings. Whatever you decide, promote it widely and often, and make sure everything you do reflects this uniqueness.

Tips to Maximize Wedding Revenue All Year Long6

3. Create a Wedding Page on Your Website Make it easy for brides-to-be and wedding planners to find your information by

creating a separate wedding page on your website, and clearly linking to it on your home page. Include photos of real-life examples of your work at weddings, as well as testimonials from happy customers, and of course make it easy for someone to contact you for a consultation.

4. Go Where Your Customers are: Social Media As millennials are reaching the marriage stage, they are using social media

to capture every moment: curating their wedding on Pinterest, sharing photos on Instagram, and posting on Facebook. This is a huge opportunity to promote what you can do, so make sure you’re using all these platforms in your marketing efforts.

While every couple is different in terms of what they want for their wedding, they all share one thing in common: They want the day to be perfect. When it comes to choosing the flowers, they may know exactly

what they want, but just as often they will want your professional advice. Be prepared for both scenarios, and be able to tailor your offerings to

fit their needs.

Weddings can be a stressful time for the bride and groom, so anything you can do to alleviate that stress will make you a wedding hero. To that end, make your flower selection and

ordering process as easy as possible, by creating a seamless link from your initial consultation in the store to online purchasing and

order management. Make it simple for a customer to make changes as needed—because things always change—and provide rapid responses

to any questions they may have.

Use these tips to maximize your wedding revenue this Spring and throughout

the rest of the year!

5. Collaborate and be Flexible with the Bride and Groom

6. Make it Easy to Select and Purchase Wedding Flowers

Wedding Roses

8 L I V R I O | M AY 2 0 1 9

While wedding trends this year can range from soft and feminine to bold and bright, one thing is true year in and year out: Roses are a staple of most wedding arrangements, and the paler tones are universally popular. These rose colors are ideal on their own or as a base for any arrangement, as you can blend them with bright colors, interesting textures and deeper shades to create stunning palettes. Here are some of the most common roses used in weddings, and a few tips about how to pair them with other flowers and foliage.

MarzipanSoft blush petals extend out from a pink center in the dainty Rio Marzipan Rose, an ideal base for classic, pastel-themed wedding arrangements. Combine it with blush Rio Hanoi Ranunculus, white Rio Stock flowers, white Rio Scabiosa pods, and green filler flowers for a romantic look.

QuicksandRio Quicksand Roses are subdued and elegant, with off-white petals and hints of pink and berry tones. As such, they are a perfect backdrop for any wedding, but can really come to life when combined with eucalyptus for a rustic, yet chic, wedding look.

LynnRio Lynn is a new addition to our rose collection, named for Lynn Lary McLean, a floral industry legend. This one-of-a-kind flower features a pale-pink center surrounded by a cream color. Its classic shape and beautiful scent mean it can work perfectly on its own, or combined with other flowers and foliage.

Pink MondialThe soft, dusty pink petals and ruffled edges with a hint of green make the Rio Pink Mondial a perfect rose for vintage weddings. Pair it with bicolor pink and white Rio Lilies and white Rio Moonlight

Carnations for a timeless, beautiful wedding palette.

White O ’Hara This paper white bloom resembles a peony, with swirls of abundant petals. The true garden rose form will blend perfectly with any pink garden rose, such as Rio Pink O’Hara, to create a soft, feminine

bouquet or wedding centerpiece.

Mother of Pearl With its vibrant salmon pink color, the Rio Mother of Pearl Rose is an ideal choice for a summer wedding palette. Combine it with soft pinks and whites for an elegant bouquet, or with hot pinks and purples for something decidedly more daring.

Pink O ’HaraUnderstated yet stunningly beautiful, the Rio Pink O’Hara is a delicate, creamy pink color with a gently ruffled head that opens to a full, breathtaking bloom. Combine it with white Rio Ranunculus and Rio White O’Hara Roses for a gorgeous bouquet.

AmsterdamBright and colorful, the Rio Amsterdam Rose has a bold coral hue with hot pink undertones. The large cup-shaped rose opens into a beautiful, full bloom. Combine it with blue Rio Hydrangea, red Rio Poms, Rio Hypericum berries, and blue thistle flowers for a rustic summertime arrangement.

MentaSoft lavender Rio Menta Roses are truly romantic. This pale lavender is as close to “no-color” as it can be, and as such combines with other colors for all types of arrangements, from bright and bold to soft and elegant.

Hermosa The dusty pink color and slightly green undertone of the Rio Hermosa Rose creates a chic, feminine look. Tight, cup-shaped blooms and velvety petals with ruffled edges make this a stunning rose that can be easily

combined with many different colors and shapes of flowers.

Ocean Song This pale lavender bloom gives a distinctly antique feel, perfect for a vintage wedding theme. Combine it with creamy ivory peonies in a soft, romantic arrangement, or create a more dramatic effect by adding darker

flowers such as purple Rio Lisianthus.

PROM P.R.E.P.(plan, review, execute, profit)

Let’s get ready for PROM NIGHT!

TIPS FOR A SMOOTH, SUCCESSFUL PROM SEASON

7For the floral industry, Spring is synonymous with Mother’s Day, and it should be—this is one of the busiest, most lucrative holidays of the year. However, in all the Mother’s Day preparation frenzy, many florists forget to prepare for the three months surrounding Mother’s Day, from April to June: Prom Season! A bit of well-thought-out preparation now can mean a smooth, successful Prom Season. Here are a few tips to help you navigate the treacherous waters of teenage prom requests:

While prom-goers will have various ideas for their corsage or boutonniere designs, the majority will go with the classics year after year: Roses and spray roses in pink, white and peach. Make sure you have plenty of these in stock, using last year’s volume to determine the quantity you’ll need, and order them at least a month in advance.

Every teen wants to wear a fabulous corsage, wristlet or boutonniere to prom, but that dreamy event can turn into a nightmare for a teen with allergies. Make sure to offer alternatives, such as corsages made with silk flowers, leaves, ribbon, and beads, which can be used to create stunning arrangements. Also consider pre-ordering flowers like ranunculus, lisianthus, sunflowers, and certain roses with low allergens.

Pinterest has become the go-to for so many when it comes to floral designs for special occasions, and prom is certainly no different. Just type “Prom Flowers on Pinterest” on your web browser and you’ll be overwhelmed with images—some beautiful, some funky, and some just plain awful. That’s why it’s important to create your own unique designs and promote them on social media. That way, you can turn a customer’s potentially disastrous corsage idea into a stylish, fashionable corsage they will love.

Everyone loves to take personality quizzes on social media, so tap into that trend by having customers take a quiz to determine the best prom flowers for their personality type. SAF has done all the work for

you here: Just go to their Prom Resource Center and you’ll have a link to their Prom Quiz which you can share on your social media pages. It’s a great way to engage teens and help them pick out the

perfect flowers for their big night.

Teens are all over social media every waking moment, so use that to your advantage. When a prom-goer comes in to pick up their flowers, make sure to include a card asking them to tag your shop

on social media. Make sure to include your Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter info, and have an offer ready when potential new customers visit these pages. You

can also promote arrangements for Mother’s Day, graduation, and other Summer events that will be just around the corner.

You can become the “go-to” florist for students at your local high schools, simply by making yourself known and available to the teachers, parents, and students. Hand out fliers featuring your prom

night promotions, and include links to your social media pages so that they can check out your fabulous

creations in advance.

Your floral shop is in a constant battle with online florists for a share of the business, and prom night is no different. Now more than ever, it’s vital to offer customers things that make them want to shop locally. For example, you can partner up with a local limo company and a popular restaurant to offer a prom package which will boost traffic for all of you, then promote this widely on social media.

TEAM UP WITH YOUR LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS.

SHOW OFF YOUR PROM FINEST ON SOCIAL MEDIA.5.

HELP YOUR CUSTOMERS CHOOSE THE RIGHT FLOWERS WITH A PROM-THEMED QUIZ.4.

With these tips, you’ll have a great Prom season and may just create some lifelong customers!

6 Ways to Boost Your Floral Sales on Father’s Day

While Father’s Day isn’t traditionally known as a top flower-giving holiday, more and more people are choosing flowers as an ideal gift for Dad. Being prepared well in advance can increase your Father’s Day floral sales and give you a boost at start of the slower Summer months.

Here are eight ideas to help you:

Prepare your online promotions well ahead of time. While you’re currently focusing most of your online promotion on Mother’s Day, don’t forget to add a promotion for Father’s Day, which comes just a month later. A simple Facebook or Instagram post that links to special offers on your website can be a great way to get customers thinking of both Mom and Dad when deciding on a gift of flowers.

1.

Page 13: RIOROSES.COM 1 · 2020. 2. 7. · Here are a few tips: 1. Keep on Top of Wedding Trends. Being in the know about the latest wedding floral trends . can help you become a go-to wedding

Run a Father’s Day contest on social media. A great way to promote Father’s Day flower purchases and increase engagement is through a contest on social media. Have your followers share their favorite “dad image”, their favorite Father’s Day memory, or even their favorite “dad joke”, for a chance to win a Father’s Day arrangement. Create a hashtag for the contest that they can share across their social media pages (i.e., #mydadisthegreatest) and you’ve just gained a ton of new potential customers.

Know who you’re promoting to. Father’s Day purchasers are not just children, so it’s important to target different types of promotion to different types of customers. Pinterest users, for example, are mostly the “mom” demographic, while Instagram and Snapchat have younger users. Knowing this, you can create ads and offers specifically to

them and increase your response.

If you’ve noticed that you have a lot of visitors to your site but not a lot of buyers, you may want to add “trust” elements such as testimonials, product reviews, and even third-party accreditation (Better Business Bureau, for

example). Another way to increase sales is with an “exit-intent pop-up”, which shows up when a user moves their mouse icon towards

the “x” of the browser, and gives an extra incentive for the customer to buy now, such as an additional discount.

Plan a promotional email campaign for Father’s Day.

Create a series of emails to go out before Father’s Day, offering a different promotion in each. Consider offering a “Dad Bundle” where you combine a gift

of flowers or a plant with a special keepsake vase, or perhaps a coupon for a free Father’s Day card with their floral purchase. Customers will respond differently to each

type of promotion you offer, so you’ll have a better chance to capture a larger share of the market.

Create a Father’s Day section in your store. Designate one area of your store where you can showcase your Father’s Day floral arrangements. Include Father’s Day cards, as well as dad-themed gift cards, for customers to purchase along with their arrangements. This makes it easy for your customers to get everything they need for Father’s Day in one location.

R I O R O S E S . C O M 13

Use online marketing tools to build trust and increase sales.

By taking a little time to prepare well in advance, you’ll be able to boost your Father’s Day sales to a whole new level. Good luck!

HOW TO MAKE A

Wrist corsages worn by the bride and her bridesmaids are a beautiful addition to any wedding celebration. With this tutorial, you will be able to create gorgeous wrist corsages in a few simple steps. While the corsage shown here is made with white roses and lisianthus, it can be easily adapted to any wedding color palette.

Once you’ve mastered these steps, you may want to create a video tutorial and share it on social media to increase your online presence. Materials

• Grosgrain ribbon, approximately 1” wide • Double-sided tape • Heavy card stock or

cardboard • Scissors • Glue gun • Floral tape • Rio Roses • Rio Lisianthus

• Filler foliage

There you have it: A stunning wrist corsage that will make any

bride happy!

1. Choose no more than three roses and two or three lisianthus for your wrist corsage, so that it won’t be too bulky. Cut the stem of each flower to about 1 inch and wrap with floral tape.

2. Cut a long piece of ribbon (about 3 feet) and locate the center. Then cut a piece of double-sided tape so that it’s 1 inch wide and about 3 inches long. Take off one side of the backing paper and attach the tape to the ribbon, leaving about half an inch at the top of the tape.

3. Cut a piece of cardboard to 1 inch wide and 3 inches long, to ensure it can be easily wrapped around the ribbon with a bit of room to spare.

4. Take the backing off the other side of the double-sided tape and attach the cardboard to it. Lay the cardboard on the table so that the tape is facing up.

5. Fold the cardboard around the ribbon, making sure it’s taped securely. The cardboard wrapped around the ribbon should stick out about a half inch on top. Then wrap a piece of ribbon around the outside of the cardboard using double-sided tape.

6. Using the hot glue gun, glue the leaves and filler foliage between the cardboard and the long piece of ribbon, as a base for the flowers.

7. Add the roses one by one, ensuring they lay fairly flat against the ribbon, then add the lisianthus and more filler as needed.

JACOB MCCALL Each month, LivRio features an interview with one of the industry’s hottest floral designers, to find out what inspires their creativity and learn about new trends. This month, we interviewed Jacob McCall, AIFD AAF FSMD CFD.

M E E T T H E D E S I G N E R !

I’ve worked in some way, shape, or form within the floral industry for over 20 years, and I’m an international design competitor and instructor. In 2015, I had the honor of representing the USA in the Interflora World Cup held in Berlin, Germany. I’m also a past winner of the prestigious Sylvia Cup competition and two-time Iron Designer of America winner. I currently sit on the national board of directors for American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD) as a Director-at-large. I am also a member of the FTD education team. Throughout the years, I’ve had the pleasure of designing for celebrity clients such as Diana Ross, Jessica Simpson, and Tiger Woods. I’ve been a retailer, event designer, reality show personality, manager, educator and product development expert. Today, I’m super excited about my current dual roles as Creative Director for an amazing floral grower, P&F Flower Farms, and the legendary Knud Nielsen company!

18 L I V R I O | M AY 2 0 1 9

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME. . .

Q &

A

1. When did you start developing these amazing flower designs, and where do you get your inspiration? Over the years, I’ve crafted a unique look of grandeur within the designs I create. When designs were minimalistic, my motto was “Go big or go home”. When I’m in competition mode, I believe in perfection and detail: Even though my designs are sometimes large and oversized, it’s the detail that’s the winning ticket. Color always inspires me—I love mixing complementary colors and textures.

Page 19: RIOROSES.COM 1 · 2020. 2. 7. · Here are a few tips: 1. Keep on Top of Wedding Trends. Being in the know about the latest wedding floral trends . can help you become a go-to wedding

4. Anything you would like to share about your relationship with Rio Roses? I am super excited to be an ambassador for Rio Roses, as Rio/Equiflor is a sister company to P&F Flower Farms. As the creative director for P&F, I get to use the gorgeous product Rio produces. For many years, I have sought the best in quality, and I wholeheartedly feel Rio is the best!

R I O R O S E S . C O M 19

2. What led you to start educating others in floral design? My background is in entertainment; I worked for several years at Walt Disney World as a performer and even went to college to pursue a degree in Theater and Performing Arts. When I saw Deborah De La Flor educate at a local wholesale house many years ago, she inspired me beyond measure, and I’ve been educating ever since. I believe giving back our knowledge and carrying on a legacy of floral education is extremely important. I’ve been so fortunate to educate all around the globe, and I learn new things in each class or show. After all, if we stop learning, how can we educate!

3. What is your vision for the new generations when it comes to buying habits, flower trends and flower designs? These kids are smart! The public—especially the younger generations—are visual learners, and education and information are readily available via applications, social media, internet and marketing. I believe a huge shift is happening within the world of flowers. Florists, don’t be shocked when a young person walks in and asks for a Gloriosa Lily or a dozen James Story Orchids. That’s right—they know them by their names. As retailers, event designers and even educators, it’s our responsibility to take education and our customer service skills to the next level.

As far as trends, “Tropical Nuevo” has swept the USA! Check out major retailers for textiles and prints. I’m seeing beautiful tropical foliage married with large focal and form flowers, in colors ranging from hot and soft pinks to apricot, saffron and forest greens. Also, a long-awaited resurgence of dried flowers is popping up everywhere; beautiful dried herbs and flowers are gracing home decor stores all over the globe.

DANZIGER INTRODUCES THE FOCAL SCOOP™ SCABIOSA The flower industry is constantly looking for innovative products. To that end, breeders are continually bringing “old” and “untouched” crops into their labs to develop them further and allow each flower’s most beautiful features to emerge. This was the case with Danziger and their SCOOP™ Scabiosa.

The scabiosa, or “pincushion flower”, had been around for what seemed like forever. It was propagated from seeds, mainly in blue varieties with medium-sized flowers and a rather delicate stem. Danziger took the scabiosa into their labs and spent years of development on this flower. As a result, four years ago they introduced a vegetative series of scabiosa named SCOOP™. With larger heads, a vibrant and brightly-colored flower ranging from purple to pink, blackberry, and even bi-color, SCOOP™ revived the Scabiosa market.

The SCOOP™ Scabiosa is now highly desired by designers of all styles, and is seen in both supermarket bouquets and unique high-end arrangements. With the success of this flower, Danziger continued the momentum and has now launched a new, highly desired product in the SCOOP™ Collection: FOCAL SCOOP™.

The new series, grown by an exclusive group of top growers around the world, offers eight varieties in a multitude of colors. While the SCOOP™ series has an average head size of 1.5 inches and is used as semi-focal in bouquets and arrangements, the average FOCAL SCOOP™ variety has a 3.5-inch diameter head and a thicker stem which keeps the larger head from bending.

The FOCAL SCOOP™ was created to answer the market demand for a SCOOP™ that can stand as a focal, whether in a consumer bunch or on its own. Designers have been hoping for this type of scabiosa as well, for the many different and unique designs they can achieve with it.

The breeding of FOCAL SCOOP™ came about because of the vast knowledge of the genetic characteristics of the SCOOP™ series, combined with the most advanced breeding techniques. This enabled Danziger to develop a series of varieties that are a true breakthrough in flower Research & Development.

The FOCAL SCOOP™ is protect by a utility patent #PCT/IL2018/051025.

LivRio is pleased to present some of the latest news from breeder Danziger.

SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES

Sustainability and environmental awareness are part of Danziger’s guidelines in both breeding programs and production. Their breeding team is looking to develop varieties that have less demand for chemicals. One of the latest innovative tags Danziger came out with is better4less™ for crops with low requirements or none at all. Certain chrysanthemum varieties, such as the leading ATLANTIS® series, need no B9 and less lighting, making them entitled to the better4less™ trademark.

Known by most as Lisianthus, this delicate prairie flower is also known as the Prairie Gentian, Texas bluebell, Poor man’s rose and Lira de San Pedro, or by its new Latin name of Eustoma. Native to North America, Lisianthus stems have glaucus, succulent like leaves, and delicate purple, pink, green, or white vase shaped blooms atop slender single or branching stems.

Although the flowers of native species tend to have fewer petals, many cultivated double flower varieties have been developed. Leading many to liken Lisianthus flowers to roses, albeit thornless ones.

These delicate looking flowers hide a tough interior. As they are native to prairie lands, they don’t enjoy having wet feet during cultivation, instead it is best to keep them on the dry side. Too much irrigation during cultivation can lead to the development of pathogens.

Lisianthus are hungry flowers, and studies show that treating them with a flower food solution directly after harvest, instead of a hydration solution helps to preserve vase life.

PURCHASING

• Choose stems with 1-3 flowers open.• Avoid any stems with leaf yellowing.

HYDRATION AFTER HARVEST

• Start processing with a clean bucket, sanitized with D.C.D.® cleaner.• Cut stems about 1 - 2 inches before placing in a flower food solution such as Floralife® Clear 300 or Floralife® Express 300.• Remove any leaves that are below the flower food solution.• Hydrate in chilled solution in the flower cooler (34 - 38° F).

SHIPPING AND STORAGE

• Shipping and storage temperatures should be 34 - 38° F.• Stems should be shipped and stored wet if possible.

RE-HYDRATION AT STORE LEVEL AND STORAGE

• Start processing with a clean bucket, sanitized with D.C.D.® cleaner.• If received dry, conditioning of stem ends with Floralife® Quick Dip is recommended to unclog stem blockage and promote uptake. Cut approximately 1” or more off stems with clean, sanitized clippers or knife.• Following Floralife® Quick Dip treatment, place flowers in a flower food solution such as Floralife® Clear 300 or Floralife® Express 300. Do not put flowers directly in metal/galvanized buckets. Use clean, high quality water that has not been treated with a water softener as the salt levels can be damaging to flowers.• Store in a cooler at 34 - 38° F.• Allow minimum 2 hours to hydrate placing buckets in an area with good airflow.

• Always remember FIFO (first in/first out) when rotating Lisianthus or any other flowers.

VASE CARE

• Remove any leaves that might be below the vase solution.• If received dry, cut approximately 1” or more off stems. Use clean, sanitized clippers or knife, and treat with Floralife® Quick Dip.• Immediately place flowers in vase solution containing Floralife Chrystal Clear® or Floralife® Express 300.

Common Defects

• Botrytis can develop on leaves if stems are packed together too tightly. Always allow enough space for air to flow around the stems.• Stem bending – flowers are geotropic and should be shipped and stored upright in bucket solutions.• Flowers not opening.• Foliage yellowing.

Special Considerations

• Some varieties can be ethylene sensitive, leading to poor opening, premature wilting, and leaf yellowing. Treating with an anti-ethylene treatment such as EthylBloc™ or Floralife® Ethylguard can help these varieties.• Other causes for poor opening can be product age (stored too long), or storing dry for long periods.• Color fade on blooms can be due to improper use of flower food or exposure to intense light sources.• Studies show the benefits of storage in solutions containing higher sugar levels – for this reason, wholesalers and retailers might consider storing flowers in Floralife® Clear 300 or Floralife® Express 300.• Studies report that wet storage improves vase life and bud development.

RIO ROSES CELEBRATES THE DORAL ACADEMY SOFTBALL TEAM

On May 9th, the nationally-ranked Doral Academy Preparatory School softball team played their last home game of the season. It was also the final softball game for five graduating seniors, each of whom have made all-Dade and all-State, and have been a big part of the team’s success.

To honor them, and to celebrate Doral Academy’s national ranking of 64th out of 1,000 and being number 6 in the state of Florida, Rio donated beautiful rose bouquets to these five senior softball players.

We are so proud of their accomplishments, and are certain that they will go on to achieve even more in the coming years.
