It was a truly excellent evening of music-making. All the performers gave of their best and supported each other in a very positive manner. The camaraderie was palpable. Jonathan Edelstein’s Jazz piano improvisation. Matthew Jones singing ‘This Nearly Was Mine’ from South Pacific. Jack Powell’s incomparable drum solo. Zak Hameiri’s sonic resonances on Tenor Sax The powerful Indyana Schneider with a flirtatious ‘Habanera’ from Carmen beautifully accompanied by Gigi Li. Victoria Zerbst’s electric presentation of her own composition inspired by the novel ‘Frankenstein’ and poetry by Keats. and finally the rapid, raving, rousing rendition of ‘I Want You To Be My Baby’ performed by Oscar Gross, Tiana Comino and Jesse Botella. A splendid evening was the product of much hard work and preparation on the part of Mrs. Sue Goodman, Mr. Gary Goldstein, Miss Jennifer Roberts and Mr. Oliver Stanton (tireless at the keyboard) and Michael McGregor. My congratulations and thanks to all. Thank you to James Lawrence (Cameron’s Dad) for photographing the evening. I congratulate the Middle School Debating team, especially Years 7 and 10 who won their debate against Sydney Grammar with the topic of debate being Education. We wish our teams all the best for their away debate against Sydney Boys High this Friday, 9th March.

SPORTING RESULTS 3rd MARCH

Last weekend the NSW Surf Life Saving Nipper Championships were held in horrific conditions at Kingscliff Beach on the Far North Coast of NSW. The Gods up that way must be terribly unhappy as they delivered wild surf conditions with massive rips, sweeps and sand banks. The weather was very temperamental with temperatures in the mid-30s, rain and strong winds. To add to this, a great deal of their beach had been eroded in the last cyclone swell that hit the coast. The carnival was quite disjointed with the beach events (flags and sprints) a couple of kilometers down the beach from the water (boards and swim) area. The board riders were in the middle of the two. From Reddam Senior School we were well represented by Ethan Davis and Jesse Walker from Bronte, Brooklyn Barataud from North Bondi and Bella Kable from Manly. All four of these students had outstanding results from the many events they took part in. Ethan Davis in his final year as a nipper picked up the Silver Medal for the 14’s boys board riding, Bella Kable also in her final year finished in the top ten in the board rescue with her partner, Brooklyn Barataud was in the North Bondi All Age Sprint relay team that finished 7th, he also finished 10

th in the flags and 12

th in

the individual sprint. Jesse Walker had a brilliant championships qualifying for the finals in 5 events (top 16) and finishing 7

th in the individual board. Jesse had the

toughest program out of our four students and never stopped during the 3 days of competition. He raced in a total of 20 races in three days and his heavy training program for the past 10 months ensured he was right up there in every race.

Link to NSW Premier's Reading Challenge Website

This week heralds the official launch of the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2012 and I am looking forward to Reddam House participating again this year. Although the Challenge is most commonly known to primary schools, it does in fact, extend to Year 9. As such, I would love Years 7, 8 and 9 to become involved this year. I have already had some interest from Year 9 students and I have encouraged them to join the Challenge! In keeping with the Reddam philosophy of a whole school approach to learning, this is an excellent opportunity to showcase all our Middle School and to nurture a competitive spirit with a view to being the best you can be. The Premier’s Reading Challenge is now in its 10th year and is hugely successful in encouraging reading and improving literacy, in school students, statewide. The challenge is a fun way for students to experience a wide range of reading material, to exercise personal choice in selection of reading materials and to become engaged in reading as a pleasurable past-time. The book list is enormous and students have until 1

st September to read

the mandatory 20 books needed to be awarded a certificate and to be recognised on the Honour Roll. Students in Middle school also have the option of reading newspaper articles from The Sun Herald (https://products.schools.nsw.edu.au/prc/newspaper.html )available on the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge website. All students need to do is register on the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge website and record each book in their on-line log once they have finished reading it. The rules for the Challenge can be found at https://products.schools.nsw.edu.au/prc/rules.html .Book lists can be accessed on this site also - https://products.schools.nsw.edu.au/prc/booklist/home.html via an author, book or series search; or by perusing the entire list.

As this library is relatively new, many titles held are already on the Reading Challenge book list. I am committed to growing the Young Adult Fiction section of the Woollahra Campus library this year, and I plan to begin by adding titles new from the Premier’s Challenge Book List for 2012. Also, local public libraries are well stocked with Young Adult Fiction and I would recommend students join their local library, not only to borrow books for the Challenge but to take advantage of the many resources including audio books, internet access, DVDs, CDs and learning workshops. Public libraries also participate in inter-library loans so the borrower has access to many more books and resources. I look forward to Reddam families embracing the Premier’s Reading Challenge this

year, the National Year of Reading. If I can be of any assistance with regard to the

Challenge please don’t hesitate to email me at

This week Mikaela Rifkin, represented Reddam in the NSW All Schools Triathlon that was held on the Olympic Course at Penrith. The Race consisted of a 600 meter swim, 16 km cycle and a 4km run. Mikaela has a swimming background and came out of the water in 3

rd position. She

finished the race in 20th position which is

outstanding considering this was her first individual triathlon. Well done Mikaela!

A big congratulations to Jonas Holle in Year 8. The Year 8’s have been asked to appropriate an artists work for their assessment task. Jonas chose “The Death of Marat” by Jaques-Louis David 1972. He appropriated it excellently using modern day props to bring it up to date and even went on to use Photoshop to further develop the image giving it an old painterly effect. Well done Jonas!!!
