Diabetes death drop THE US Centres for DiseaseControl have noted a drop in themortality rate of diabetes sufferersthroughout America. This figure is interestingconsidering the fact that the CDC alsosaid that the number of US citizenssuffering the disease is on the rise.
Medicine award winners LAST night the NPS recognisedstar players in the Australianmedicines landscape in an awardsceremony at the glittering NationalMedicines Symposium (NMS) dinner. The National MedicineWiseAwards are designed to celebratethe high quality of work by companiesand individuals which bothassists and educates consumersand health professionals. Judges for the awards, accordingto NPS, consisted of representativesfrom across the health sector whoconsidered entries based onimpact, innovation and reach. As part of the eveningsformalities the awards wereannounced by ParliamentarySecretary for Health and Ageing,Catherine King and NPS CEO, DrLynn Weekes. “Consumers need to be at thecentre of all we do in building amedicinewise community, and eachof the National MedicineWiseAward winners demonstrates oneway in which health outcomes canbe positively impacted throughquality use of medicines activity,”said Weekes.
Taking home the award forEducation for health professionalsto build QUM skills - under$100,000 was the BE ALERT ANDWORK TOGETHER for medicinesafety: DAA Incident AwarenessToolkit; whilst the Building amedicinewise community:consumer programs award wastaken out by two joint winners: TheNorthern Rivers Career Link PharmacyProgram and the RedUSE (ReducingUse of Sedatives) Program. The Education for healthprofessionals to build QUM skills -under $100,000 award went to theMedicines Book for AboriginalHealth Workers; and the Excellencein labelling and packaging awardwent to APHS Packaging:Medication Compliance Sachet. Meanwhile the Best e-healthresources award was taken byPharmacovigilance in pregnancyusing population-based linkeddatasets; whilst the Best abstractaward went to Tracey-Lea Laba,Jo-anne Brien and Stephen Jan,University of Sydney and TheGeorge Institute for Global Health. The best student abstract wasawarded to Chee Kong Teo, Facultyof Medicine, UNSW; and the Bestposter went to Rana Ahmed,Jacqueline Borst, Yong Wei Chengand Parisa Aslani, University ofSydney and University of Nottingham. MEANWHILE the NPS NationalMedicines Symposium will wrap upthis afternoon, with Weekesexpected to release the details of anew national framework forprescribing competencies - detailsin Monday’s Pharmacy Daily.

Pharmacist opens eyes of future generations RETIREDpharmacistRobert Lazzariniand his wifeDiane fromWagga Waggain NSW havegenerouslydonated$25,000 toCharles SturtUniversity’sSchool ofBiomedicalSciences, in
order for the institution to acquire a state-of-the-art microscope system. Unveiled this week, the system, according to Professor of Rural Pharmacy,Patrick Ball, has a fully integrated digital imaging system and replaces avintage 1962 monocular microscope. “We anticipate this will support a range of research activities within theSchool for at least another 10 to 15 years,” he said. “This will make existing projects much easier and quicker compared tothe previous system, and will provide support for a range of possibleprojects in the School that the previous system could not,” he added. THE Therapeutic GoodsAdministration has released adiscussion paper which exploresnew ways of helping consumersunderstand information onmedicine labels and packaging. “In addition to betterinformation for consumers,prescribing doctors andpharmacists will be assisted byclearer and more uniform labellingto avoid confusion when they

The paper looks at issuesincluding active ingredientprominence, space for dispensingstickers, small container labelrequirements, umbrella branding,pack inserts, blister pack labellingand standardisation of labelinformation. According to the TGA thediscussion paper canvasses allmedicines including over thecounter and prescription drugssold in both pharmacies andsupermarkets. The release of the discussionpaper follows an extensive TGAreview of current packaging andlabelling, to improve themethodology of information andinstruction given to patients onhow to take medicines. Stem cell heart hope ISRAELI scientists have successfullygrown healthy heart tissue from theskin cells of patients with heart failure. The research, published in theEuropean Heart Journal this week,found that “it’s possible to takeskin cells from an elderly patientwith advanced heart failure andend up with his own beating cellsin a laboratory dish that arehealthy and young - the equivalentto the stage of his heart cells whenhe was just born”.
Pharmacy & social media PHARMACISTS should embracesocial media, according to DominosCEO Don Meij’s. Speaking to members of theAustralian College of Pharmacy thisweek on internet and social mediabusiness strategies Meij said thatpharmacy businesses should usesocial media, such as Youtube,Facebook and Twitter to createvalue for customers and build loyalty. The social media sites can also beused to gather feedback on businessoperations, and as a way to respondto customers feedback and improveoverall operations, Meij said. Interestingly Meij pointed outthat 45% of Dominos onlinefeedback is negative, saying thatthis is in fact good for business as itprovides an avenue for improvement. In addition Meij said that thecompany’s presence on Facebookand Twitter provides immediatedata and real time ‘mysteryshopper’ style feedback which ishonest and direct.

Perl leaves J&J Pacific JOHNSON & Johnson Pacific’sGraham Perl has left the companyafter eleven years in its RegulatoryPolicy and External Affairs andPharmacy Consumer Health divisions. A well known figure in theindustry, Graham has served ascustodian of pharmacy relations forPfizer, as well as a judge of thePharmacy of the Year awards and aleader of the awards’ ongoingdevelopment. Graham is also fondlyremembered for his fancy dressefforts at the annual PharmacyAssistants conferences. “I’ll probably file these events inthe dark recesses of my mind andhope that the photos neveremerge,” Graham joked. As for his next step, Graham toldPharmacy Daily “I love fishing. “My cork will no doubt bob upsomewhere nearby, but in themeantime I plan to take a deepbreath, look about and decide in whatdirection to cast my line,” he said.

Palliative care survey A RECENT survey commissionedby Palliative Care Australia hasfound that 96% of GPs believe thatthey have an important role to playin supporting people at the end oftheir life. The survey looked at responsesfrom around 300 Australian GPsand found that over 80% haveinitiated conversations aboutadvance care planning withpatients, despite the fact that overone third said that they received nopalliative care training at anundergraduate level. A similar number felt they were‘not knowledgeable enough to dealwith the situation of a patientasking about end of life’, whilst 84%said they don’t use any tools toidentify patients who will die withinthe next 12 months. As such Palliative Care Australia iscalling for more undergraduateeducation and continuingprofessional development to beprovided for healthcare workers.
