Car with an Internet ID..!! - Alibaba RX5 The Alibaba group, which is a Chinese e-commerce giant, recently unveiled a car

funnily named OS’ Car RX5. You might be wondering what business does a magazine in the Computer Engineering Department has with cars. But wait, it does have a very intimate connection. Cars and computer science have mostly been discussed in respect to driverless cars currently under testing and development by Google. Elon Musk’s Tesla is also in the news for accidents due to its Autopilot feature. But no, the RX5 isn’t just another car. Hell, it doesn’t even try to be a driverless car. What sets it apart from the usual buzz is the practical use of the Internet of Things (IoT). For those who don’t know, the Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept in which every device, be it a smartphone, a laptop, a TV, or a mirror is connected to the internet. Each of these devices are identified by a unique IP address. These things/devices may then communicate with each other to make the world around us smarter.

The car features some pretty advanced technology like voice operated car controls (not driving controls, obviously), and an “Internet ID” which identifies the driver using his/her smartphone or smart watch. It also features an intelligent map which doesn’t need a GPS or Wi-Fi for tracking the car. Selfie lovers, rejoice, because this car can also shoot 360-degree pictures using the four built-in cameras provided in the car. These pictures can then instantly be uploaded through your smartphone. All these features are OK, but what powers this insanely cool tech? The answer is YunOS. YunOS in Chinese literally means CloudOS which pretty much relates to what this OS does. YunOS is a Linux distro for smartphones based on AOSP. It uses the idea of using Apps on the cloud without the need to download the App, which incidentally is what Google is aiming for in the upcoming versions of Android. There are certain “alternatives” like

INDEX

Android Auto, but they are not as tightly coupled to the car as YunOS. Watch a test drive of the car with Jack Ma, the Chairman of Alibaba here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BsyZp3E5Nc One of the most important and testing questions when you talk about IoT is privacy and security. A lot of IoT products in the current market are flawed and are sensitive to security attacks. A user's privacy can be severely encroached upon if the IoT products are not

properly secured. A possible example of such an issue is the hack of Nissan’s Leaf car. Of course, being in India, we may not even get to see the car on roads. Also, the voice control is Chinese, so Alibaba must really take the time to develop it, at the very least, in English. The car hasn’t been showcased or reviewed just yet, and until it goes through rigorous testing, it is really hard to say how the car will be. It sounds really cool though!

If you’re interested in learning about Internet of Things (IoT), you can read more in the IoT issue of the ACM XRDS magazine in which I contributed to. Find it here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0ByZz7te0reC7Y25ZNjBOc2Z6cVBtOWRQaWhnLWhYT2hVSE5N

Augmented Reality – Journey with Childhood friends... Pokémons..!!

Pokémon GO and Augmented Reality: Science behind the game and craze Pokémon GO taps on Augmented Reality and geocaching to give a new twist to mobile gaming. The Pokémon GO phenomenon has swept over the entire world. The craze to catch the tiny anime creatures has gone viral, even though the game has launched in just five countries officially. It has already been declared the biggest mobile game in US history, beating other notables like Clash of Clans and threatens to outdo social networks like Tinder, Twitter, and even Facebook when it comes to daily active users. So, what is the craze really about? Pokémon GO is a free-to-play location-based Augmented Reality (AR) game developed by Niantic Labs in collaboration with Nintendo for Android and iOS devices. Players walk around outdoors searching for Pokémons, magical anime creatures with special powers. Pokémon GO uses your device’s GPS to track your location and find new Pokémons, and then uses the phone’s camera to virtually superimpose them over the surroundings. The game switches on the camera, and a user will see the Pokémon appear right in front of them, almost as if it were a part of the real world. Like in the series, the user must then throw the ‘Pokeball’ at the creature, and try to capture it. To comprehend the game’s appeal, one needs to understand the anime. The anime’s protagonist, Ash Ketchum, travels with his friends Misty and Brock to catch Pokémons and fight Poke-gym owners to become the Pokémon master. After you level up enough, you need to travel to different geographical locations to fight other Pokémon masters to get control of the gym. The game appears to have picked popular locations across cities as ‘GYMS, where users can go to train their Pokémons. And what exactly is Augmented Reality (AR)? Pokémon GO relies on AR to bring these creatures to life. AR is quite different from Virtual Reality (VR), in which a user is transported to another world, and is expected to play within this realm. Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Sony’s upcoming PlayStation VR headset are examples of VR gaming headsets.

In Augmented Reality, images/ information generated from a computer are projected on to real-life objects or surroundings, allowing users to read data and/or interact with them. Microsoft’s HoloLens is one of the more ambitious examples of AR; the HoloLens will project virtual creations on to real world surroundings, and let users interact with them. AR-powered apps aren’t a new idea, however. Nokia’s Lumia smartphones had an AR-powered app called City Lens in 2012, where a user could point the camera at, say, a marketplace, and the app would reflect information about it. The Google Goggles app offers something similar, and was being tested with the Google Glass project.

There are similar concepts in the Head-up-display of fighter aircraft and cars. But Pokémon GO is without doubt the first time AR has had such mass appeal. No powerful headsets like Oculus or HTC Vive (wearing which for long leaves many feeling nauseated) are needed — the Pokémon is right there, on your smartphone, dancing on a park bench, or maybe even on your boss’s head! So what is the future of AR? In 2011-12, most phones didn’t have great cameras or processing capabilities to run AR-powered apps smoothly; in 2016 even 10,000 ₹-smartphones can handle graphics-heavy games. Also, constant 4G connectivity in the US, New Zealand, Australia, the UK and Germany — countries where the game has officially launched — has had people getting immersed in it.

The idea of AR being integrated into your existing device and the addition of a popular anime franchise has turned out to be a hit combination for Niantic and Nintendo. Anyone with a reasonably competent smartphone can download the app and start his adventure. So strong is the hype that people are saying things like: “It’s raining outside. Now I cannot go outdoors and play video games”, and there has been at least one case of a man quitting his job to hunt exclusively for Pokémons !!. We are moving towards a future without physical screens. The majority of our interaction with technology will be with virtual screens and buttons. As more devices like Google Glass and Microsoft Hololens come to fruition, AR will find greater use in day-to-day life. While VR gaming might find a market in hard-core gamers, AR mobile games and apps will have more mass appeal.

Three Cloud Trends to Watch Through 2020

As cloud computing continues its push into the enterprise, what are the biggest trends that will spur adoption?

Three key trends will shape the cloud of the future.

UK-based research company Technavio has looked into its crystal ball to come up with three key emerging trends that will impact the growth of the enterprise cloud services market over the next four years.

None of the trends are particularly ground-breaking, but they do offer some insight in terms of what your customers may be considering for the first time or as part of their cloud roadmap.

“Cloud computing services enable rapid deployment and provisioning of IT infrastructure based on changing needs. Enterprise needs to meet day-to-day computing requirements encompass rapid scalability and deployment. The availability of a number of applications to meet end-user needs is another factor driving the adoption of private cloud services,” Technavio lead analyst for cloud computing research Amit Sharma said in a statement.

The three enterprise cloud trends identified by Technavio are as follows:

1. Growing adoption of hybrid cloud services

Hybrid cloud services have been pitched as the best way for an organization to

meet regulatory compliance while benefiting from the scalability of the cloud. Hybrid cloud environments also make it easier for organizations to bring their existing infrastructure into the equation by not requiring a total rip-and-replace approach.

Service providers will be critical supports in helping organizations adopt hybrid cloud services. According to a recent report by SolarWinds, only 27 percent of organizations have adequate resources to manage a hybrid IT environment.

“The demand for hybrid cloud has been gaining popularity, particularly among midsize enterprises, including manufacturing companies, regardless of their expensive nature,” Technavio said in a statement.

2. Rise in adoption of BYOD policy

More and more devices blur the line between personal and professional use, in part because of the flexibility of cloud services, and for this reason organizations should be implementing BYOD policies now.

By having policies in place, organizations protect themselves and their proprietary data.

Shadow IT continues to be an issue for enterprises as employees download cloud applications without the approval of IT. A recent report by Blue Coat’s Elastica Cloud Threat Lab Teams found that one in 10 documents shared at an organization contain data that is subject to compliance regulations, such as Protected Health Information and Payment Card Industry data.

Being realistic about what cloud apps are in-use at an organization can help create a BYOD policy that protects sensitive data while enabling employees to be productive. Having a BYOD policy framework that can be updated as more and more devices are added to the mix over the next several years will help put organizations in a solid place.

3. Emergence of cloud service brokerages

As the options for cloud services increase, so too will the need for service providers who can help organizations decide which cloud services are best for them and guide them through implantation. This is where a cloud service brokerage comes in.

While cloud service brokerages (CSB) have been around for a few years, bigger

companies have stepped into the marketplace more recently, including Accenture, which acquired Cloud Sherpas earlier this year to boost its cloud consulting business.

According to a report by Markets and Markets, “the cloud service brokerage market has been witnessing extensive growth in recent years due to the advancements in integration of various services on hybrid cloud deployment model.”

“Furthermore, the increasing adoption of integration of big data, BYOD, and mobility services on cloud is also encouraging the growth of CSB.”

The Park Bench-Inspirational

The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read beneath the long, straggly branches of an old willow tree. Disillusioned by life with good reason to frown, for the world was intent on dragging me down. And if that weren't enough to ruin my day, a young boy out of breath approached me, all tired from play. He stood right before me with his head tilted down and said with great excitement, "Look what I found!” In his hand was a flower, and what a pitiful sight, with its petals all worn, not enough rain, or to little light. Wanting him to take his dead flower and go off to play, I faked a small smile and then shifted away. But instead of retreating he sat next to my side and placed the flower to his nose and declared with overacted surprise, "It sure smells pretty and it's beautiful, too. That's why I picked it; here it's for you". The weed before me was dying or dead. Not vibrant of colors, orange, yellow or red. But I knew I must take it, or he might never leave. So I reached for the flower, and replied, "Just what I need." But instead of him placing the flower in my hand, he held it mid-air without reason or plan. It was then that I noticed for the very first time that weed-toting boy could not see: he was blind.

I heard my voice quiver, tears shone like the sun as I thanked him for picking the very best one. You're welcome, he smiled, and then ran off to play, unaware of the impact he'd had on my day. I sat there and wondered how he managed to see a self-pitying woman beneath an old willow tree. How did he know of my self-indulged plight? Perhaps from his heart, he'd been blessed with true sight. Through the eyes of a blind child, at last I could see the problem was not with the world; the problem was me. And for all of those times I myself had been blind, I vowed to see the beauty in life, and appreciate every second that's mine. And then I held that wilted flower up to my nose and breathed in the fragrance of a beautiful rose. And smiled as I watched that young boy, another weed in his hand about to change the life of an unsuspecting old man.
