PDL urges vax vigilancePHARMACIST indemnity insurer,

PDL, is urging pharmacists to take steps to avoid potential incidents relating to pharmacist administered influenza vaccinations.

With age-related incidents among the most common, the professional indemnity insurer has recommended that pharmacists and assistants pay close attention to the patient’s age prior to dispensing or administering flu vaccines.

“The most common of the age-related incidents involve influenza vaccine prescriptions for children,” PDL said.

“Often these prescriptions are written generically… if the age of the patient (i.e. the child) is not identified then there is a risk that the vaccine supplied is not approved for the child’s age.

“Understandably, parents may be upset when informed the child has received a vaccine that is not approved for their child’s age. This may see a formal complaint being lodged with the regulator.

“To limit the risk of an incident occurring pharmacists and assistants receiving or processing prescriptions for influenza vaccines must confirm the age of all patients.

“Several cases have been identified whereby patients fall below the State-legislated minimum age for pharmacist vaccination.

“It is apparent that some of the patient consent proformas request a date of birth, but no age in years.

“PDL has made representations to providers of these forms regarding this aspect and the PSA consent form has been amended to incorporate this field. Update your pharmacy’s consent form to request the patient’s age in years.”

For patients over the age of 65 years, being able to identify the person’s age can enable pharmacists to discuss the option of a high-dose trivalent vaccine, administered by a GP, which may be more suitable.

In relation to injury, PDL noted that Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration was the most common injury sustained by patients.

“While this condition is usually resolved relatively quickly, the consequence for some patients can be significant and may include time off work,” PDL said.

SHPA budget alertTHE Society of Hospital

Pharmacists of Australia (SHPA) has swung into urgent action in recent weeks after highlighting a revision to private and public hospital pharmacy pricing as part of the 2019 Federal Budget.

The previously unheralded cuts will reduce wholesale markups on Section 85 medicines from the current 11.1% uncapped level, to 7.52% of the approved ex-manufacturer price.

According to preliminary SHPA estimates the changes could result in a “significant reduction in funding across hospitals nationally,” with the Society’s CEO Kristin Michaels saying “we are concerned the impact of the proposed cuts may negate some of the great achievements made by hospital pharmacists in the provision of safe and quality patient care in recent decades”.

Michaels said the new pricing regime is set to be introduced on 01 Jul 2019, with SHPA planning to advocate to the incoming government to prevent or reduce any negative impacts.

She also encouraged SHPA members to ensure the CEOs of their respective health services were aware of the planned change, and to stay in touch with local SHPA representatives as appropriate.

Labelling updateTHE Therapeutic Goods

Administration (TGA) has posted an update on its transition requirements for Quality Use of Medicines clear medicine labels, as it aligns standards with international best practice.

The TGA is also providing a series of posters for release over the next four years to help educate Australians around how to make more informed choices about their medicines & use them more safely.

The first of these posters is now available, with recommendations to place them in prominent positions such as consumer waiting areas.

Access the posters at tga.gov.au.

Yes Minister, get a jab!

HEALTH Minister Greg Hunt needs to stay on top of his game during the current Federal Election - so it’s no wonder that he took the opportunity to have a flu immunisation at Chemist Warehouse Mornington earlier this month.

The jab was administered by pharmacist immuniser, Dmytri Nikolayev, who works at one of the more than 230 Chemist Warehouse stores nationally where immunisations are available with the 2019 influenza vaccine.

Doctors, nurse practitioners and pharmacist immunisers are administering the vaccine to Chemist Warehouse customers for $12.99, with 2019 being the sixth year running that Chemist Warehouse has offered the service.

“As the House of Wellness we are committed to educating Australians on the importance of being prepared and encouraging them to be vaccinated to protect not only themselves but those around them and the wider community,” said Chemist Warehouse Retail Director and pharmacist, Mario Tascone.

Baby products recallNEW Zealand’s Medsafe regulator

together with Weleda (NZ) Ltd, has instigated a consumer level recall of Baby Teething Powder and Baby Colic Powder because “small (~1cm long), soft, slivers of white plastic could potentially peel off the jar cap upon first opening”.

Affected batch numbers are listed at medsafe.govt.nz.

RACGP accused of fear-mongeringTHE Royal Australian College of

General Practitioners (RACGP) is being accused of “trying to scare people” with its response to the Qld Government’s decision to trial pharmacist prescribing (PD 18 Apr).

Responding to the news that Queensland pharmacists will be empowered to prescribe antibiotics for certain conditions and the contraceptive pill, RACGP President, Dr Harry Nespolon, warned patients would be put at risk.

“It’s quite simple,” he said.“Pharmacists don’t have the

medical training required to safely deliver these critical healthcare services. The Queensland Government is thumbing its nose at antibiotic stewardship.”

Pharmacy Guild of Australia Victorian Branch President, Anthony Tassone, rejected the College’s claims, and suggested the RACGP may need to consider its approach to government relations.

“Not sure condemnation and slurs of government departments ‘thumbing their nose’ is going to make friends and influence people.

“Once you’re finished hyperventilating and trying to scare people let us know and we can work together for patient care.”

Meanwhile, one Twitter user suggested the R in RACGP stood for Recalcitrant.

EMA year in reviewTHE European Medicines Agency

(EMA) approved 42 new active substances and gave positive opinions in 84 cases during 2018, it revealed in its Human medicines highlights 2018 summary.

The year also saw four drugs or classes of therapy withdrawn from the market: daclizumab, quinolone and fluoroquinolone antibiotics, valproate medicines and retinoids - see ema.europa.eu.

NOBODY knows what goes on in another person’s mind, but Irish pharmacists are wondering what inspired one of their peers to stock up on Easter eggs.

Maybe they were trying an innovative way to boost condom and home pregnancy test sales by promoting discount chocolate as an aphrodisiac - who knows?

However, the decision to barricade the dispensary with cheap Easter eggs hit a very flat note with pharmacist, Shane O’Sullivan, who tweeted a photo of the store saying “behind the wall of chocolate there’s someone who trained for five years to be a healthcare professional”.

The snap (below) showed that some pharmacists are their own worst enemy when it comes to securing an expanded scope of practice for the profession.

With their stock of Easter Eggs, a Coca-Cola branded fridge and Thomas the Tank Engine balloons forming a barrier between patients and any pharmacist brave enough to emerge from the dispensary, angry pharmacists warned the display would damage the profession’s credibility.

Responding to the photo Ronan Quirke said, “This is a new low. Good people are lobbying hard for an extended role. This puts us back years”.
