If you issue the cards at the beginning of the seminar, you can quickly determine at any time how many participants are already present. Frame Game

The ZMS-card game is a so-called „Frame Game“. This means the cards are used with different playful mechanisms in order to convey entirely different content. Thereby they can be used flexibly for many topics. On this page, we present different capabilities. Please sort the playing cards before output in the sequence shown above. This sorting is a prerequisite for the ideal distribution of all symbols. The deck is factory-packed in this order. Start handing out the cards always with the ace of clubs.

Idea, share & benefit

The original idea to use a card game this way comes from Sivasailam „Thiagi“ Thiagarajan. The modifications on the classic Skat-cards and the associated extensions of capabilities have been developed by the Centre for Management Simulation at the DHBW Stuttgart.

What experiences have you had with the ZMS-card game? How have you used the ZMS-card game? Share your experiences and ideas with us and get another card game set in turn. We are excited!

Tips

A complete game set consists of 32 cards. For larger groups the card set can be expanded by cards out of another game. Additional cards should be issued according to the general sort sequence. If four or more extra cards are needed, we recommend an extension from „ace of clubs“ or „10 of clubs“.

If you issue the cards at the beginning of the seminar, you can quickly determine at any time how many participants are already present. Example: if the next card to be issued is the „10 of clubs“ - 16 participants are already present.

ZMS-card game „Not just a game.“

Information and ideas for facilitators

The ZMS-card game is a simple tool to promote interaction in teaching lessons. It enables all participants to actively participate in a problem solving process.

ZMS-card game „Not just a game.“

Start handing out the cards always with the ace of clubs.

Application example 1: Classification of small groups

Discussions on technical, methodological and social aspects are easier in small groups.

1. Each participant receives a playing card in the presorted order starting with the ace of clubs.2. With the playing cards (grey and red; clubs, hearts, spades and diamonds; 1, 2 and 3 pawns; 5 icons on the right

edge of the cards) the participants are divided into small groups. Example: 6 groups = number and colour of the pawns

3. The participants work on a given issue and report it in the plenary afterwards.4. Further issues can be discussed in various new group constellations.

A group of people can be divided in two ways: in a certain number of small groups or in small groups with a certain number of people.

Options for the classification of a certain number of groups:

• 2 groups: red and grey• 3 groups: number of pawns • 4 groups: suit• 5 groups: symbols at the edge• 6 groups: colour and number of the pawns• 8 groups: type of card* all A + A, all K + K, all D + D, ...• 10 groups: symbols at the edge and colour• 16 groups: same type of card and colour* A K D B 10 9 8 7 A K D B 10 9 8 7

* A classification in this number of small groups is possible only if (almost) all the cards of a cardset have been handed out.

Options for the classification in a certain number of persons:

• Group of 2: two persons with the same colour and type of card, e. g. -A and -As / -As and -As• Group of 3: three persons with a different number of pawns• Group of 4: four persons with the same type of card all A + A, all K + K, all D + D, ...• Group of 5: five persons with different symbols at the edge• Group of 6: six persons with a different colour and number of pawns

Tip: Use a whiteboard pen to highlight the relevant aspects of the playing cards. This may facilitate the communication with the participants.

Application example 2: Pointed (pyramid method)

Based on the individual ideas on an issue the participants develop common solutions. Approach for the elaboration of 5 ideas :

1. Each participant works on the predetermined question for himself and wrote his proposal on the game card (or moderation card) .

2. Each participant chooses a partner with the same symbol (for example ). 3. Both partners discuss their issues and decide which of them they want to pursue.4. Two -groups join forces. They decide again which idea they will pursue.5. Each of the 5 final groups works out their best proposal and presents it to the plenary.
