Digitization and Virtual Exhibitions

• Advancements in technology democratize access to art and literature– Wikipedia– Google Books– 3-D Walkthroughs– DH Projects

3-D Rendering and Printing

• 3-D rendering provides sophisticated digitization of sculpture pieces• 3-D Files can be altered, replicated, downloaded, and printed• Provides access to work in a new way

Page 4: Zdanski Project Showcase

How does the process of art digitization change the experience of interacting with the piece?

What does 3-D rendering and printing contribute to expanding access to art?

August Rodin’s Bronze Casts- Analogue 3-D Printing

• Auguste Rodin- French sculptor and prolific artist whose most famous works include La Porte de L’enfer (The Gates to Hell) and Le Penseur (The Thinker)

• These pieces have been replicated through the process of bronze castings and appear in many museums

• Combined pieces to create new works

The most “valuable” component of the piece is the mold, not the cast.

Art as Experience, Experience as Memory

• Value placed on experience from the value of memory-making• Viewing art is an experience• The perspective of the experience influences the value placed on the art

3-D Printing Engages Visual, Tactile, Emotional, and Kinesthetic Learning Styles

• Visual display of 3-D rendering• Emotional connection with piece through active manipulation• Tactile component of printed object• Kinesthetic focus on altering and optimizing 3-D rendering

Future Goals for Digitization

• Virtual Reality advancements offer new methods of art digitization• Greater facility with 3-D rendering and interaction• Minimize distracting experiences from virtual exhibitions• Incorporate other exhibition-centered experiential components
