The C11 site in the Victoria Harbour master plan was designated for a multideck
car park with 570 spaces serving the surrounding commercial district. The
triangular shape and prime location made design a challenge. The project team
proposed an unconventional solution: a seven-level car park below four levelsof residential units. The hybrid building is cloaked in a faade system that
disguises the mixed use.
The project team used MicroStation and Bentley Architecture to collaborate
with various consultants on multiple options for site layouts. Multiple iterations
were produced in relatively short periods of time. The optimum design included
an efficient use of E XO-skin panels, which created a random look for theabstract building form. ProjectWise was used to manage files and drawing
approvals.

To design sustainable housing that uses passive-solar energy, Witteveen+ Bos
had to take into account the orientation of the buildings relative to the sun. The
housing development was located on two hectares of land in the Kirchberg-
Plateau quarter of Luxembourg City. The undeveloped area had no nearbybuildings to conduct a solar study, so a new approach was required.
Witteveen+Bos used MicroStation to model solar sensors with various surfaces
and angles toward the ground. Solar exposure calculations revealed the ideal
angle for the building designs to maximize solar panel efficiency. Design
of the houses incorporated the op timal sun orientation and the ideal angleof solar panels. Using the MicroStation Solar Exposure Calculator allowed
Witteveen+Bos to quickly recoup the technology investment.

The greatest resource issue facing Namibia today is its lack of potable water.
Left unresolved, this problem could stifle the countrys economic and social
development. Inspired by the method used by Namibian desert beetles to catch
moisture from the air, the Hydrological Centre of Excellence along the western
coastline of Namibia will use its sails to capture large droplets of water from
desert fog.
Atlas Industries goal was to develop a design proposal for an education center
that actively demonstrates alternative means of fresh water generation. The
team used Bentley design software to quickly visualize 3D building models from
2D drawings. The designers then used 3D modeling for more detailed analysis
of critical components of the building. The building model will provide insight
into the operation of the structure and inform maintenance and development.
