A Message From the Dean

For the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, the 2011-2012 academic year was one of tremendous accomplishments. Our part-time M.B.A. program was ranked in the top five in the northeast and top 50 nationally by Bloomberg

Businessweek. This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the hard work and dedication of our faculty, staff, alumni and students. It is because of your collective efforts that we have achieved this profound recognition – one that we embrace with great Hofstra pride!

On October 16, the eyes of the world turned to Hofstra as the University hosted the second presidential debate of the 2012 campaign. Hofstra is one of only three universities that have hosted more than one presidential debate.

Another momentous occasion was the involvement of the Zarb School of Business and Hofstra’s School of Education in the NASDAQ closing bell ceremony on April 2, 2012. This event officially launched the Minds on the Markets 1.0 program, a curriculum sponsored by the NASDAQ QMX Foundation, which was funded to teach high school students about financial markets.

The Zarb School has also launched an online M.B.A. program, which, in addition to Bloomberg Businessweek, has been ranked by U.S News & World Report, The Princeton Review, and Forbes. New dual degree programs have also been created, saving students time and money in obtaining both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in five years. The alumni association has also increased its collaboration with current students through resume prep workshops and mock interview sessions.

A pivotal conference titled US-China: Opportunities for New Business Partnerships was organized by the Zarb School of Business and the Center for International Financial Services and Markets this past May. This conference reviewed various aspects of future business collaboration between companies in China and the United States. Some of the organizations represented

included the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Morgan Stanley Asia, The Hain Celestial Group, the U.S. Department of Commerce and China Daily USA.

On November 8, 2012, the Wilbur F. Breslin Center for Real Estate Studies and Frank G. Zarb School of Business collaborated to present a conference titled Real Estate and Alternative Investments: 2012 and After, offering faculty and students perspectives from some of the most outstanding members of the real estate and financial communities. Participating companies included S&P Dow Jones Indices; the Chicago Board Options Exchange; Venture Capital Maxim Group LLC; Knights Investment Group; ING Financial; TPG-Axon Capital; Rock Center Capital Partners, LLC; TIAA-CREF; The Beechwood Organization; Triple Five Worldwide Organization; Renaissance Downtowns LLC; and the Ackman-Ziff Real Estate Group.

I am also pleased to acknowledge two longtime Zarb faculty members – Dr. Harold Lazarus, former dean and distinguished professor, and Dr. Esmeralda Lyn, former vice dean and distinguished professor – who recently retired. We are grateful for their dedicated efforts and wish them all the best in their future endeavors. We also welcome Dr. George Papaioannou to his new role as vice dean.

As we continue in this academic year, our focus will be on building internships and study abroad opportunities that will enhance the Zarb experience for our students and equip them with the tools they need to succeed in our global marketplace.

Sincerely,

Patrick J. Socci, Ph.D.Dean Frank G. Zarb School of Business

Capital One Campus Entrepreneurial ChallengeThe Capital One Campus Entrepreneurial Challenge at Hofstra University is a joint initiative led by the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, Capital One Bank and Uniondale High School. Throughout the yearlong program, Capital One Bank small business experts serve as mentors to Zarb School of Business student entrepreneurs, advising them on how to effectively build their business plans and grow their businesses. The Zarb students, in turn, serve as mentors to aspiring student entrepreneurs in Uniondale High School’s chapter of the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA). At the end of each academic year, the Zarb student teams present their business ventures to their peers, and a team of judges consisting of representatives from Capital One Bank and Zarb faculty members determines a winner based on the student groups’ “annual report” and factors such as profitability, the number of people impacted and the nature of the venture.

Money and MeAnother collaboration between the Zarb School of Business, Hofstra’s School of Education and Capital One Bank is the Money and Me program, a curriculum designed to bring financial literacy into the classroom. Undergraduate and graduate Hofstra University students offer instruction to fourth graders about personal money management. The interactive curriculum incorporates mathematics and ELA concepts, as well as practical applications, in every lesson. Each class has a virtual savings account where “money” is deposited and withdrawn. In its first year alone, more than 1,700 students benefited from lessons such as wants vs. needs, savings accounts, sources of income and expenses, budgets, checking accounts, credit and debit cards, inflation and investments.

“ These six programs, in addition to several other initiatives, are teaching Zarb students real-life lessons regarding today’s challenging economic climate. These partnerships provide students with hands-on experience and corporate networking opportunities that will support them even after they have graduated from Hofstra University.”

— Dr. Patrick Socci, Dean, Frank G. Zarb School of Business

Teaching Students About Today’s Financial IssuesThe Frank G. Zarb School of Business, in conjunction with NASDAQ, NEFCU, Capital One Bank and Flushing Bank, is teaching local elementary, high school and Zarb students about today’s financial issues. Six unique programs have been developed, each with the same goal in mind – to further educate students in today’s monetary and business issues.

Minds on the Markets 1.0Minds on the Markets 1.0 is a collaborative effort between the Zarb School of Business, Hofstra’s School of Education, and the NASDAQ QMX Foundation. The program was officially launched on April 2, 2012, with the ringing of the closing bell at NASDAQ. It is a seven-module curriculum designed to give high school students in-depth knowledge of financial markets and their role and importance in the world, as well as introduce students to the various career paths that are available in the financial services industry. Video interviews with experts in the field of finance accompany each module. Students compete for a three-day financial tour in New York, which includes an invitation from NASDAQ to participate in the ringing of the closing bell in Times Square.

Zarb undergraduate and graduate students reached out to local residents to lend a helping hand after Superstorm Sandy. Partnering with Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano, the students volunteered to be a part of the Economic Recovery Task Force, an initiative aimed at the micro- and macroeconomic issues resulting from the storm.

Zarb students contacted numerous businesses in local areas such as Cedarhurst, Freeport, Glen Cove, East Meadow, Hewlett, Lynbrook, Merrick, Rockville Centre, Oceanside, Valley Stream and Massapequa Park, among other Long Island neighborhoods, informing them of important resources available to assist in their recovery. “It was such a gratifying experience to speak to local businesses in our area and feel like we helped make a

difference in their lives,” stated Steven Medard, a Zarb undergraduate student majoring in finance and marketing. Recovery services and programs available to Nassau County residents include Small Business Administration disaster recovery loans, federal disaster assistance, shared work programs, unemployment assistance and municipal contacts.

“Our students have always maintained Hofstra’s tradition of community service. We are proud to have an astounding student body that exhibits great humanitarianism and leadership for their school, their peers and their community,” stated Dr. Patrick J. Socci, dean, Frank G. Zarb School of Business.

Rick Wilson, assistant professor of marketing and international business at the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, and his team have been awarded $2.2 million by the National Science Foundation to fund a research project titled “Science Express.” The project will assess informal science learning in transit advertising contexts and specifically aims to determine whether subway advertising is an effective method to engage commuters in learning about climate science.

Dr. Wilson’s expertise in the advertising industry, which includes more than 10 years of product management experience and 13 academic

publications, provides him with vast experience and knowledge in this field. “This research grant represents one of the few projects of any kind where science and business have come together to encourage informal science learning, and I am very proud to be associated with a project that not only will improve the transit advertising industry’s knowledge base but also contributes to the outreach efforts of climate science,” stated Dr. Wilson.

This is one of many research projects in outdoor advertising that Dr. Wilson has contributed to. He previously received a grant from the American

Academy of Advertising for an outdoor advertising study that uses an innovative software program from cognitive neuroscience that predicts which objects in a scene are expected to be attended to by mimicking the human visual system. “Our faculty here at the Zarb School of Business are always involved in cutting-edge studies, and the groundbreaking work that Dr. Wilson is contributing to this project is a prime example of that,” stated Dr. Patrick J. Socci, dean, Frank G. Zarb School of Business.

Ladder to LeadershipHofstra University’s Frank G. Zarb School of Business and Flushing Bank have collaborated to create a mentoring program between the Zarb School of Business and Uniondale High School. The program, “Ladder to Leadership: Nurturing the Next Generation of Women Business Leaders,” brings together members of Zarb’s Graduate Women in Business student organization with young women at Uniondale High School to teach them professional practices that will help them succeed in their future careers.

Hofstra University at Commerce PlazaThis unique collaboration between Commerce Plaza and Hofstra University begins with a six-week preparation cycle that takes place in

many fifth grade classrooms, introducing the basic principles of economics. The preparation cycle is followed by a full-day field trip to Commerce Plaza in Levittown, New York, where students apply the lessons learned in the classroom to “actual” work experience. Hofstra University services at Commerce Plaza include on-site Admissions, Student Accounts, Financial Aid and University Relations offices. Within these offices, students take on tasks related to their job functions and adapt their lessons in the classrooms to real-life situations.

Nassau Educators Federal Credit Union and the Zarb School’s Blog and Podcast ProjectNassau Educators Federal Credit Union (NEFCU) and the Frank G. Zarb School of Business continue their long history of collaboration through the Blog and Podcast Project. Using social media technologies, Zarb students blog and create podcasts about issues that are relevant to young, professional adults (18 to 24 years old). Students post information on various topics, including making financial decisions, lifestyle management, job searching and graduate education.

The group of 16 students visited four cities – Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Beijing and Guangzhou – and a number of major companies during

their stay, including Wal-Mart, Morgan Stanley, Lenovo and the IBM Research Center. Among the many highlights of the trip were meeting with David Sutherland, the Asia-Pacific chief financial officer of Morgan Stanley in Hong Kong; hearing a presentation by Cory M. Grenier, ThinkCentre marketing manager, Lenovo in Beijing; visiting the IBM Research Center in Beijing; and touring the world’s largest Sam’s Club in Shenzhen.

“It was such a revealing experience to see how Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club operate in China,” said Dr. Kaushik Sengupta, director of the online M.B.A. program and associate professor of management, entrepreneurship and general business. “We met with a number of significant companies and their

executives. Students got a chance to see first-hand the immense development happening in China, and came back with a new perspective on what it takes to do business there.”

“The global practicum really adds value to the online M.B.A. program,” Dr. Sengupta said, “because it anchors the curriculum in a global setting that is so important for all businesses today.”

Dr. Yong Zhang, Hofstra professor of marketing and international business, who accompanied the class on the trip, praised the group on the quality interactions between the students and the host executives at the business meetings. He said, “the comments made and the questions raised by the students during the business visits have impressed our hosts greatly. Such a great learning experience has undoubtedly broadened everyone’s perspectives and sharpened their cross-cultural business skills. As a result of the

trip, many feel more prepared in taking on a possible foreign assignment and meeting the challenges of today’s global business.”

The group also toured famous cultural venues and landmarks, such as the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall, and saw the facilities used for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

Dr. Sengupta said the trip provides a critical opportunity for students to bond with faculty, and with one another. “A very important contribution of the trip is that it allows the group to be together for an extended period of time – the networking and relationships within this group are much stronger as a result of the trip,” he said. “This is all the more important since students don’t get to see one another for most of the program’s duration. This trip fills that void.”

In fall 2011 Hofstra’s Frank G. Zarb School of Business launched Long Island’s first online M.B.A. program, with a focus on strategic business management. The program’s flexibility is ideal for business professionals whose schedules don’t fit a traditional graduate program. The 48-credit online M.B.A. can be completed in as little as two years, or a maximum of five years. The program includes two on-campus residencies and a global practicum.

Professors López and Maccarrone Conduct Faculty Research Seminar

In October 2012 Victor D. López, J.D., Hofstra professor of accounting, taxation and legal studies in business, and Eugene T. Maccarrone, J.D., CPA, Hofstra associate professor of accounting, taxation, and legal studies in business, conducted a faculty research seminar titled “Leading the World in the Wrong Direction: Is It Time for the U.S. to Adopt the World Standard ‘Loser Pays’ Rule in Civil Litigation?” Their research explored the current state of the American Rule and its notable statutory exceptions at the state and federal levels. Professors López and Maccarrone attempted to determine whether justice and fairness would be better served by abandoning the American Rule in favor of a “loser-pays” system that brings the U.S. rate of litigation into alignment with the English/World Rule.

Hello All,

It has been a long time since I last updated you about my professional life. I recently launched an online retail store, UPTOWN Galeria (uptowngaleria.com), that markets and sells women’s

apparel and lifestyle accessories across the globe. In addition, I have opened a retail store in New Delhi, India, that showcases all the products designed by my team. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you all. This success was not possible without the guidance and support I received studying at Hofstra University. The knowledge, skill set, information, application and other guidance gathered during my education made me realize my dreams and provided me with the tools to make it possible. My experience studying abroad not only provided me with educational knowledge, but also helped me be independent and make decisions. The guidance I received from faculty at the Zarb School of Business and the ways I learned to apply the knowledge I gained practically have truly helped me in my career. I sincerely appreciate your support and thank you for your guidance.

She was instrumental in extending North Shore-LIJ’s cardiac surgery program to Southside in February 2011. Even by Las Vegas standards, Joseph Magliarditi ’94 has enjoyed a long winning streak. He is an 18-year veteran of the casino and resort industry, having settled in Las Vegas after a brief stint as an analyst with

Times Mirror Company in New York – his first job after he graduated from Hofstra. Magliarditi recalls the advice of one of his Zarb professors – words that still resonate years later. “He said to the class – ‘it’s not about your first job. You’ll have three or four jobs before you really figure out what you want to do,‘ ” Magliarditi said. “Everybody wanted to be an analyst, everybody wanted to work on Wall Street. But the professor was 100 percent right. I’ve never forgotten it.”

Indeed, Magliarditi began his career in Las Vegas as a corporate analyst for the Rio Hotel & Casino, and steadily worked his way up through the organization, eventually rising to senior vice

president of operations. He left to start a software company, which he ran for several years before returning to the gaming industry in 2005 to become chief operating officer and executive vice president of the Colorado Belle and Edgewater casinos, owned by the same family that owned the Rio.

Magliarditi says Hofstra’s close proximity to New York City and the University’s reputation drew him to Zarb for his graduate studies. The upstate Niagara Falls native wanted to be close to, but not in, New York City. “Coming from upstate, I didn’t really want to live in the city. Hofstra was a great middle ground – it wasn’t the city, but it was close enough to take advantage of the opportunities there.”

But after jobs at Times Mirror and Merrill Lynch, Magliarditi gambled on a future in Vegas, finding that the casino industry offered the nuts-and-bolts challenges of running a large business with the glamour of gaming. “I especially love the gaming part of the casino business – it makes it more exciting than running a traditional hotel,” he said.

Running a casino/resort, he said, requires, in many ways, the same skills needed to run any large business: a deft touch managing people, a vision for the future and an ability to realize that vision.

“I definitely enjoy creating a new venue, a new hotel – to me, there’s nothing better than the creative part of the job,” he said. He relishes new challenges, which is how he ended up at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, where he became president and CEO in 2010, and then moved on to the Palms in 2011, where he has been overseeing a $125 million renovation.

As he has become more successful, Magliarditi has developed a greater appreciation for his time at Hofstra. “It’s a cliché, but education really is the foundation you fall back on,” Magliarditi said. “You’re in school and you think, ‘I’m never going to use any of this, ‘ and then, all of sudden, you’re in charge of all these people and they’re looking to you for leadership and guidance, and their livelihood depends on how successful you are. More times than not, your education becomes that necessary foundation.”
