Environmental Declaration of IC2010Environmental Declaration of IC2010Environmental Declaration of IC2010Environmental Declaration of IC2010Environmental Declaration of IC2010

“We recognize the real threat to life due to the changingenvironment and limited availability of resources. All membersare encouraged to help minimize the impact through theirbehavior and actions. Y’s Men International will be carbonneutral from 2010-11.”

The above is the declaration agreed to by the participants at the YokohamaInternational Convention in 2010. The declaration states that Y’s MenInternational will take responsibility for the greenhouse gas emissions createdby the travel of our leaders.

The declartion calls for a change in our lifestyle. It was with this intention that theArea adopted the “Go Green” project and exhorted all members to thinkgreen.

Over the last one year several clubs have embarked on planting saplings inschools, collegeFs and other locations, reports of some of them were carriedin a previous issue of Y’s Times. This issue carries a couple of more projectnews, which escaped our attention ealrier.

We also carry below an article that edifies us a little more on the benefits ofgreening our mind in this month of the World Environment Day, which wasobserved on June 5 worldwide. The UN has declared 2011 as the “Year ofthe Forest.” This article is abstracted from the UNEP website.

“Go Green” Project“Go Green” Project“Go Green” Project“Go Green” Project“Go Green” Project

LAUNCH OF PROJECT “GO GREEN”: PIP Ym Dr. Sukumaran inaugurated theproject at the last Area Convention by handing over saplings to the five RegionalDirectors. It is reliably learnt that, since then, Y’s men have planted over250,000 saplings in various parts of the country as part of the project.

If you ever wondered how it wouldbe possible for you to save an entireforest then look no further thanmaking simple lifestyle changes.Forests play multiple roles in ourlives, including providing a sourceof livelihood, refuge for manyspecies, and clean air for all.

As a result of the growing globalpollution levels forests have oftencome to be referred to as the ‘lungsof the earth’. This is particularlybecause deforestation and forestdegradation account for nearly20% of global greenhouse gasemissions, which forests wouldabsorb if carefully managed.

Benefits of forestsAs a resource, forests provide manyimportant natural resources, suchas timber, fuel, rubber, paper andmedicinal plants. Forests also helpsustain the quality and availabilityof freshwater supplies. More thanthree quarters of the world’saccessible freshwater comes fromforested catchments. Waterquality declines with decreases inforest condition and cover, andnatural hazards such as floods, landslides, and soil erosion havelarger impacts.

Climate change mitigation: It’s

well known that forests play a keyrole in our battle against climatechange; storing carbon andsucking in carbon dioxide from theatmosphere and locking it intotheir biomass.

Products / benefits (water): Butwhat’s less well known is that theproducts and services they provideare essential to every aspect of life.By regulating water for many ofthe world’s rivers, they help securewater quality, and supply nearlyhalf of the world’s largest cities. They also help decrease theimpacts of storms and floods, whilst helping control erosion.

Biodiversity: As the mostbiologically diverse ecosystems onland, forests are home to morethan half of terrestrial species, from the great apes to the smallestof creatures.

Economics and livelihoods: Theyalso provide homes, security andlivelihoods for 60 million

Indigenous peoples, whilstcontributing to the livelihoods of1.6 billion people worldwide.

Products and biodiversity: Theimpact of forests reaches evenfurther. In many developingcountries more than 80% of totalenergy consumed by people andindustry derives from forests, suchas fuel wood and charcoal. Tradein timber and other forestproducts, is estimated at almost330 billion US Dollars a year. Useof the genetic diversity withinforests enables the development ofnew medicines; progress inhealthcare and science.

The numbers

Forests cover 31% of total landarea while at the same timesupporting 80% of terrestrialbiodiversity that live in them. Manyof the world’s most threatened andendangered animals live in theseforests, making them crucial tosustaining ecosystems. Not onlyanimals live in the forests, as theyalso provide a home to more than300 million people worldwide.

Rather shockingly, 36 millionacres of natural forest are lost eachyear. Preserving forests through-out the world has to be in ourcollective consciousness so as tochange our lifestyles.

What can be done

Civil society can play a significantrole by independently monitoringall parties involved, raisingawareness on forests andsupporting grassroots initiatives.

Individuals can make wisepremeditated choices over whatproducts they will buy and onlypurchasing forest products thatoriginate from sustainablesources. This means checking thatfurniture, wood, paper and otherproducts you buy are verified ascoming from legal sources.

Most importantly, taking action onforests requires an ongoingcommitment to changing lifestyleand therefore is not a one-offaction. Your new lifestyle demandsthat you are forest-conscious in allyour choices, consumption andactions.
