continued from front“Our government set ambitious em-ployment targets in the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth and we’re making progress on those targets by investing in training and participating in recruit-ing initiatives to attract skilled workers to Saskatchewan.”Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate was 3.7 per cent in June (seasonally ad-justed), the lowest in Canada and well below the national rate of 7.1 per cent. Regina’s unemployment rate was 3.7 per cent and Saskatoon came in at 3.9 per cent. Regina had the lowest unem-ployment rate among major cities and Saskatoon had the second lowest rate.Other highlights include:There have been 19 straight months of year-over-year increases in employ-ment;Over 90 per cent of the new jobs cre-ated in the past year (17,400 out of

19,300) were full-time jobs; There were 12,000 more women work-ing in Saskatchewan than a year ago, accounting for over 60 per cent of the employment growth;By sector, the largest employment gains in the past year were in agriculture (6,200), trade (5,200), professional, sci-entific and technical (4,000) and con-struction (2,900); andOff-reserve Aboriginal employment was up by 1,200 for five consecutive months of year-over-year increases.“June’s record job numbers are a good indication Saskatchewan’s economy is moving forward at a steady pace,” Mor-gan said. “Strong job growth is vital to growing our province, as it helps busi-nesses to succeed, helps attract more investment, and gives working people the opportunities they deserve for a better quality of life.”

The Shaunavon Swimming Pool was a busy place yesterday (Monday) as the first session of lessons got underway.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - JULY 9

• On July 9, 1877, the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club begins its first lawn tennis tournament at Wimbledon, then an out-er-suburb of London. Twenty-one amateurs showed up to compete in the Gentlemen’s Singles tournament, the only event at the first Wimbledon. The winner was to take home a 25-guinea trophy.

Tennis has its origins in a 13th-century French handball game called jeu de paume, or “game of the palm,” from which developed an indoor racket-and-ball game called real, or “royal,” tennis. Real tennis grew into lawn tennis, which was played outside on grass and enjoyed a surge of popularity in the late 19th century.

In 1868, the All England Club was established on four acres of meadowland outside London. The club was originally founded to promote croquet, another lawn sport, but the growing popularity of tennis led it to incorporate tennis lawns into its facilities. In 1877, the All England Club published an announcement in the weekly sporting magazine The Field that read: “The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon, propose [sic] to hold a lawn tennis meeting open to all amateurs, on Monday, July 9, and follow-ing days. Entrance fee, one pound, one shilling.”

The All English Club purchased a 25-guinea trophy and drew up formal rules for tennis. It decided on a rectangular court 78 feet long by 27 feet wide; adapted the real tennis method of scoring based on a clock face—i.e., 15, 30, 40, game; established that the first to win six games wins a set; and allowed the server one fault. These decisions, largely the work of club member Dr. Henry Jones, remain part of the modern rules.

Twenty-two men registered for the tournament, but only 21 showed up on July 9 for its first day. The 11 survivors were reduced to six the next day, and then to three. Semifinals were held on July 12, but then the tournament was suspended to leave the London sporting scene free for the Eton vs. Harrow cricket match played on Friday and Saturday. The final was scheduled for Monday, July 16, but, in what would become a common occurrence in future Wimbledon tournaments, the match was rained out.

It was rescheduled for July 19, and on that day some 200 spectators paid a shilling each to see William Marshall, a Cambridge tennis “Blue,” battle W. Spencer Gore, Gore beat Marshall, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.

In 1884, the Lady’s Singles was introduced at Wimbledon, and Maud Watson won the first championship. That year, the national men’s doubles championship was also played at Wimbledon for the first time after several years at Oxford. Mixed doubles and women’s doubles were inaugurated in 1913. By the early 1900s, Wimbledon had graduated from all-England to all-world status, and in 1922 the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, as it was then known, moved to a large stadium on Church Road. In the 1950s, many tennis stars turned professional while Wimbledon struggled to remain an amateur tournament. However, in 1968 Wimbledon welcomed the pros and quickly regained its status as the world’s top tennis tournament.

Shaunavon Credit Union will make an $8,000 donation to assist in the restoration of the Shaunavon Cenotaph. Given the state of disre-pair of the structure and the cost of its restoration, the credit union saw a significant community need and decided to lend financial support.

“It is important we continue to honour those who risked or lost their lives in order for us to en-joy the freedoms that we do,” says Chuck Gartner, General Manager of Shaunavon Credit Union. “Our

cenotaph is an outstanding struc-ture that has been a part of our community for nearly 100 years. It is important that it will be standing strong 100 years from now so future residents can continue to appreciate and understand the sacrifices that were made.”“The 18 foot structure was con-structed using fieldstone that was donated by local farmers,” Gartner goes on to say. “This is the same kind of community spirit that saw the creation of Shaunavon Credit Union in 1944 and the same kind of

community spirit that is a big part of our organiza-tion today.”

“The Cenotaph resto-ration has been on the radar for a few years now and we are very fortunate to have citizens step up and assist in the cost of the project - the Shaunavon Credit Union is another great example.  No matter what project the community’s peo-ple are working on, the Shaunavon Credit Union is there to support - for this we are grateful,” says Jay Meyer, Chief Admin-istrative Officer for the Town of Shaunavon.

Phase one of the ceno-taph restoration process is nearly complete and a timeline for phase two of the project has not been established yet.
