The CBCA Championship and the
Shaunavon ClassicSheep Dog Trial
Starting today, Southwest residents will get an opportunity to see some of the country’s top dogs this week during the Canadian Border Collie Association’s (CBCA) national cham-pionship. “This is the biggest event in Can-ada,” beamed organizer Jamie Van Rhyn. “We will see the top open dogs from all over the country.” Of course, hosting a major cham-pionship isn’t anything new for Van
Rhyn and her team of dedicated vol-unteers. Just last year, the group organized the Western Canadian Champion-ships. In fact, it was the local team’s handling of that event that led the CBCA to award the championships to Shaunavon. However, in both cases, the local group only had a few months to pre-pare for the events after the original host sites pulled out from their com-mitments. “We did it last year with only a few months to get things organized and

everything worked out well,” said Van Rhyn. “It’s definitely a big undertaking, but we were excited about the challenge.” Just like the Western trial last year, this summer’s Canadian championships will be held in conjunction with Shaunavon’s annual Sheepdog Classic. Both events will run over a four-day period, from August 22 to 25. Both competitions will run simultaneously. Scores are closely tracked on two separate scoreboards, and although some dogs may not qualify for the Canadian Finals, they can still run in the Shaunavon Sheepdog Classic. The competition will culminate with the CBCA’s double-lift finals on the last day of the event (Sunday, Aug. 25). This year’s competition could see as many as 70 dogs in the field, including some international entries. The event will be held five kilometres west of Shaunavon on the Service Road and 1 km north. The site will be well marked with signs. The event will also feature a number of additional activities, including a farmer’s market on Saturday. Tickets for the event can be purchased in advance at the RBC, Jöz Clöz, the Snack Shack and from Van Rhyn. They will also be available at the gate.Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, umbrellas, sunscreen and bug spray. Dale Montgomery of Maple Creek will once again provide the sheep stock for the event. He will also act as the Canadian Championship’s trial direc-tor. Montgomery, who has been raising and training border collies since the 1980s, has won multiple national titles himself. The 2013 CBCA Finals will be judged by Jack Knox of Butler, Missouri. Knox is known for his reputation as a judge who is concerned about quality, honesty and pride and not just winning competitions. The CBCA rotates its national championship between Eastern and Western Canadian sites. The Canadian event was held in Kingston, Ont., last year.

• In 1957 John Lennon had a skiffle group called The Quarrymen. In 1958 he met Paul McCartney and his friend George Harrison and asked them to join the band. This was the nucleus of the The Beatles who debuted in 1960. After achieving success in Britain, they arrived in North America to play on The Ed Sullivan Show on Feb. 9, 1964. There were 728 people in the theatre and 73 million watching on television, making it the most watched show in history at the time. In 2000, Entertainment Weekly magazine and music channel VH1 put the performance at the top of their list of rock ‘n’ roll’s 100 greatest TV moments.
• During the show’s first half, the band played All My Loving, ‘Till There Was You, and She Loves You. Later in the show they played I Saw Her Standing There and I Want To Hold Your Hand. The Beatles were on the show again Feb. 16, 1964. A third performance, taped during Feb. 9 rehearsals, was broadcast Feb. 23. John Lennon was so nervous during the first performance that he taped song lyrics to the back of his guitar.
• The Beatles flew back to England after only a few shows but soon returned for a North American tour Aug. 19 to Sept. 20, 1964. Ca-nadian dates were Aug. 22 at Empire Stadium in Vancouver, Sept. 7 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto (two shows) and Sept. 8 at The Forum in Montreal. Their two other Canadian appearances were both in Toronto -- Aug. 17, 1965 and exactly one year later.
ALSO ON AUGUST 22:• 1827: Industrialist Ezra Butler Eddy is born in Vermont. E.B. Eddy, who would become known as the matchmaker of the world, moves his small friction-match factory from Burlington, Vermont to Hull, Quebec in 1851. In 1929, the company becomes the first to produce book matches that are used around the world. • 1935: The first Social Credit government in the world is elected in Alberta under William Aberhart. The party remains in office for 36 years.• 2001: Tests on a dead crow found near Windsor, Ont. confirm the first case of West Nile virus in Canada.
On This Day in History: 1964: The Beatles conquer North America...

SOME MORE INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT CATS!5. CATS DON’T ALWAYS NAPCats like to nap rather than sleep but if they are relaxed enough to enter a deeper sleep, they produce the same brain wave patterns that we do when we dream.6. CATS COMMUNICATE VIA NOSENose-to-nose greetings between cats are unusual, as it puts both in a vulnerable po-sition. However, cats who know each other well but have been apart for a while feel safe enough to do this to confirm visual recognition and gain information about how the other cat is, where he has been, and what he has been doing.7. CATS REQUIRE POSITIVE REINFORCEMENTCats cannot understand punishment as humans do. To learn the lesson, cats must be praised and rewarded for desired behaviour instead.8. CATS CLEAN THEIR TEETH WITH MEATGiving your cat a strip of raw meat everyday to chew on will keep his gums and teeth in good condition. Suitable meats include poultry, rabbit, or beef that has been deboned.

An employee called her new boss to explain there was a problem with her check. In checking the timesheets the boss noticed that she had not punched in since her first day of orientation. He tried to explain that her check was right since she had only worked the one day for the company. The blonde went on insisting that her check was short, and that the company apparently had problems with their math in figuring out her check. She asked her boss how many days were in a year. He said there are 365. She asked if he knew how many weeks were in a year. And he replied there are 52. She went on to say that since there are 52 weeks per year in which she had 2 weekend days off per week, leaving 261 days available for work. Since she was scheduled to work 8 hours a day, she spent 16 hours each day away from work, and that added up 170 days, leaving only 91 days for work. She went on to explain that during the day she spent in company orientation she learned that the company allowed her 30 minutes each day for her two coffee breaks, which counts for 23 days each year, leaving only 68 days for work. Orientation also informed her that she would be given a 1-hour lunch each day, which used up another 46 days, leaving only 22 days available for work. The company also allowed 2 days per year for sick leave, leaving her only 20 days per year to work. The company additionally allowed her to be off 5 holidays per year, bringing her available working time down to 15 days. Then there were the 14 days vacation the company so generously allowed all employees which leaves only 1 day for her to work ... and well, the boss has already conceded that she did time in and out on her orientation day, so would he please get her check corrected. And if it would be easier for the accounting department ... they could go ahead and make it out for her yearly salary, since she had obviously already put in her share of work for that year.
