FARMERS ON TRACK FOR BUMPER CROP OF WHEAT, OTHER GRAINS
cbc.ca - Wheat production up 22% from 2012 to a record 33 mil-lion tonnes, Statistics Canada reports
Canada’s wheat production has risen 22 per cent from 2012 to a record 33 million tonnes after an unusually good growing season.
Statistics Canada released fig-ures Friday showing strong crop yields in wheat, barley, oats and canola. Only soybean and corn
production are down. The Canadian Wheat Board pre-
dicted the bumper crop two weeks ago, saying rain and heat came at the right time for most producers.
Record crop yields in Prairies pushing grain prices down
The problem is that most of the world experienced the same ideal conditions, meaning world grain prices are falling.

record 48 bushels per acre, up from 42.6 bushels per acre in 2012, with every province but Quebec reporting higher yields, according to the Statistics Canada report for September.
Production gains range from 15.5 per cent in Manitoba to 26.4 per cent in Ontario. In Quebec, there was a 17.2 per cent increase, but that was a result of a larger harvested area.
Canadian farmers anticipate a 15.9 per cent increase in canola to 16 million tonnes, with produc-tion up more than 24 per cent in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The yield per acre has risen close to one-third at 36.9 bushels per acre.
Barley production is forecast to increase 18.1 per cent to 9.2 mil-lion tonnes, and production of oats will rise 16 per cent to 3.2 million tonnes.
Soybean production is falling as Ontario farmers switch to other crops and Quebec farms experi-ence lower yields. Across Canada, soybean output will fall 3.9 per
cent from a year earlier to 4.8 mil-lion tonnes.
The production of corn for grain is anticipated to edge down 0.1 per cent from 2012 to 12.9 million tonnes.

THANKSGIVING DAY IN CANADA
Thanksgiving Day in Canada has been a holiday on the second Monday of October since 1957. It is a chance for people to give thanks for a good harvest and other fortunes in the past year.
Background The native peoples of the Americas held ceremonies and festivals to celebrate the completion and bounty of the harvest long before European explorers and settlers arrived in what is now Canada. Early Europe-an thanksgivings were held to give thanks for some special fortune. An early example is the ceremony the explorer Martin Frobisher held in 1578 after he had survived the long journey in his quest to find a north-ern passage from Europe to Asia. Many thanksgivings were held following notewor-thy events during the 18th century. Refugees fleeing the civil war in the United States brought the custom of an annual thanksgiving festival to Canada. From 1879, Thanksgiving Day was held every year but the date var-ied and there was a special theme each year. The theme was the “Blessings of an abundant harvest” for many years. However, Queen Victoria’s golden and diamond jubilees and King Edward VII’s coronation formed the theme in later years. From the end of the First World War until 1930, both Armistice Day and Thanksgiving Day were cele-brated on the Monday closest to No-vember 11, the anniversary of the offi-cial end of hostilities in World War I. In 1931, Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day and Thanksgiving Day was moved to a Monday in Oc-tober. Since 1957, Thanksgiving Day has always been held on the second Monday in October.

5 TIPS FOR CLEANING FOR FALL (TIP 5 OF 5)By Sara Elliott
These five important autumn chores will help get you prepared for winter and save you from having to play catch up during those short winter weekends when there never seems to be enough time or energy to get things done before it gets dark outside.
BEAT POLLEN AND BUGS In fall and winter, we use our homes more and close them up tight to shut out the cold. While we’re protecting ourselves inside, we’re trapping dust, dander and mold that can make us sick. Before you batten down the hatches for winter weather, make sure that you get your home as clean as you can:
• Bedding -- Wash all bedding in preparation for cooler temperatures and use very hot water, 130 degrees Fahrenheit (54.4 Celsius) or higher to kill dust mites and bacteria. Over the winter season, be sure to wash bedding weekly [source: Minkin].• Carpets -- Shampoo all of your carpets and change your vacuum cleaner bag. When you vacuum, go over each area multiple times to get up as much dust as pos-sible.• Drapes and Blinds -- Launder drapes and vacuum window blinds. If it’s been a year or more since you tackled cleaning non-wood blinds, remove them and wash them out of doors with a mild soap. Use the hose to rinse off the soap and let them dry completely. Clean wood blinds with a mild wood cleaning solution.Heater/Air Conditioner -- Change or clean your HVAC filter, and repeat the process every month through the winter.• Pets -- We love them, but they can be a handful, particularly if someone in the fam-ily has allergies. Whenever possible, bathe cats and dogs regularly to keep dander to a minimum. A weekly bath may seem unrealistic, but even a monthly wet or dry bath is better than nothing. If you teach them young, you may be able to train pets to tolerate the vacuum cleaner for a weekly vacuuming.• Moist Surfaces -- Clean surfaces that tend to stay moist a while, like shower enclo-sures, sinks and floor drains, with mold-busting cleansers or a homemade prepa-ration made with a weak solution of bleach and dishwashing liquid.Your warm, cozy house may look in-viting to more than just your family and friends this winter. If you have or develop problems with fleas, bedbugs, mice, cockroaches or other vermin or pests, call a professional or deal with them sooner rather than later. Your family and pets will thank you.
