Sea Squirts Camp (Half-day camp) | Ages 5–6 Sessions 1–9

Ever wondered what it is like to be a shark, sea star, or whale? This camp brings to life some of the biggest and smallest animals in the sea. Sing a song each day to introduce a new theme for the day with activities that include crafts, sand castle building at Baby Beach and a hunt for treasure.

Neptune’s Mysteries Camp | Ages 6–7, Sessions 1–9

Become a detective and solve mysteries each day using scientific tools and techniques. Search the Dana Point Marine Conservation Area, examine findings during a Marine Mammal cruise onboard the R/V Sea Explorer, and explore the habits and adaptations of marine creatures.

WEEK-LONG DAY CAMPS Coastal Explorer Camp | Ages 10–12 Sessions 1–3, 5–7, 9

Explore how scientists study human impact on the coastal ecosystem. Use engineering skills to assemble and operate a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Take a 2-hour whale watching cruise and spend another day fishing and collecting ocean samples aboard our R/V Sea Explorer. Kayak in the harbor, investigate the intertidal zone, and have a beach day!

Sea Tech | Ages 12–14, Sessions 4, 8

Investigate technology and skills used by real ocean scientists! Daily activities include working in small teams to construct and test a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and participate in exciting challenges. Learn to use sophisticated research instruments aboard the R/V Sea Explorer, run local water tests, and examine what lives in a sample of the sea floor.

Marine Science Careers / Internship Academy | Ages 14–17, Session 6

Prepare for a marine science internship or career! Explore intertidal ecology, animal husbandry, laboratory investigations, and shipboard research. Activities include snorkeling, ROV workshop, research cruise and leadership/team building. As a successful “graduate,” you may apply to intern with the Ocean Institute, conduct a research project during the school year, and present findings at our symposium. You must apply for admission by submitting a program application and two letters of recommendation.

Island Bound Camp | Ages 11–13Day 1 at Institute; Days 2-4 at seaJune 20-23, July 5-8

After a day of in-depth training at the Institute, take a 3 day round-trip voyage to Catalina Island aboard the schooner Spirit of Dana Point. Engage in sailing, navigation, rope work, scientific exploration, kayaking, swimming and snorkeling with our marine biologists and professional sailing crew. This voyage of discovery will be an adventure to remember! Partial scholarships may be available, call for details.

Buccaneer Adventure Camp | Ages 7–8, Sessions 1–9

Set a course for adventure exploring the life of pirates and experience the lost arts of the mariners. Each day is filled with hands-on activities aboard the Pilgrim and on the Maddie James Seaside Learning Center pier including crafts, sail handling, rowing, storytelling, treasure hunts, “Dress Like a Pirate Day,” and voyaging to sea aboard the R/V Sea Explorer.

Ocean Discovery Camp | Ages 8–9, Sessions 1–5, 7–9

Immerse yourself in the fun and fascinating world of a marine biologist. Work in our laboratories, collect oceanic samples, dissect a squid and use authentic scientific equipment to explore the ocean. Other camp highlights include using underwater robots, a cruise aboard the R/V Sea Explorer, and a trip to the SEA LIFE Aquarium next door to LEGOLAND California.

Seafarer’s Odyssey Camp | Ages 9–10 Sessions 2, 4, 5, 7–9

Come embark on an unforgettable maritime adventure through time! As seafarers, you will engage in the early techniques of rowing longboats. Moving on to the Golden Age of Sail, work with traditional equipment on the Maritime Pier and sail aboard our tallship Spirit of Dana Point. Finally, investigate today’s technology aboard our modern research vessel, Sea Explorer.

Pilgrim Parent-Child Overnight Program Ages 8–Adult, July 16, 3:00pm to July 17, 9:00am

Modeled after our award-winning living history programs, families will step back in time. Partake in a variety of maritime activities including rowing in the harbor, raising sail, going up the mast in a boatswain’s chair, singing chanteys, and listening to seafaring stories from the Captain. Hearty meals are included. All shipboard activities on the Pilgrim are conducted while safely at dock.

Tiny Tots: Parent & Me Program – Mighty MarinersChildren ages 2 to 3 years accompanied by an adultTuesdays, 9:30am to 10:45am, July 12 – August 16

Join us for this six-week maritime-themed series of exploration and play. Stretch your child’s imagination through creative activities that support language development, social interaction, and problem solving.

Family Science Nights | Ages 4–104Thursdays, 6:00pm to 8:00pm, June 30, July 14, 28, August 11

Get “up close and personal” with local scientists. Each summer evening experience will include a presentation by an engaging guest speaker with alternate activities for kids, followed by a lab program to introduce your whole family to the fascinating world of science. A different topic will be covered each week.

Junior Neptunes | Ages 6–8, August 23, 24

Discover what life is like underwater! Meet the fish from the popular children’s book, Big Al. Interact with the animals in our labs and conduct investigations in underwater adaptations. Ride aboard the R/V Sea Explorer exploring the harbor and taking a brief trip out of the harbor to view the local sea lions.

Junior Oceanographer | Ages 9–12, August 23, 24

What is it like to be a marine scientist? This fun-filled day includes a two-hour Marine Wildlife Cruise on the R/V Sea Explorer and hands-on laboratory activities, including a fish dissection, microscope investigations, and driving an ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) in our research tank.

Turtles, Sharks, Whales & the Sea | Ages 6–8

This program will highlight a different animal each week. July 6 & 7 Get “up close and personal” with a turtle and compare land and sea turtles. July 13 & 14 Explore everyone’s favorite ocean predator as we discover what separates sharks from fish. July 20 & 21 Whale day! Investigate the largest animals in the world.

Rocky Seashores, Kelp Forests, and the Deep Sea | Ages 6–8

This program will highlight a different habitat each week. August 3 & 4 Learn about rocky seashores in our Discovery Pool with sea stars and anemones. August 10 & 11 Visit an enchanted kelp forest and discover the creatures that hide there. August 17 & 18 Investigate the deep sea and the glowing adaptations needed to survive.

Lil’ Scallywags Half-Day Program | Ages 5–6June 24, July 8, August 5, 19, 22, 23

Ahoy Mates! Little ones experience some sailor fun while staying safe and sound on dry land. During this half-day experience, tour a tall ship, listen to sea stories, make maritime crafts, and participate in sailor activities on our maritime wharf.
