Lay the foundation “Rome wasn’t built for a day.”

A beginning of something new, especially in an area as intense and fluid as that of social media,

can be quite difficult. This initiative, like any other serious project, will take a lot of your time

and effort but if you invest enough energy into it, your idea might turn into a successful

business with high returns and good potential for development. Laying the foundations of

something you’re still not sufficiently familiar with might seem like an intimidating task. This

leads to the purpose of the first chapter of the book. I will try to explain in a few points how to

create the basis of a successful social media page with great potential for influencing far more

people than you ever imagined it could. The first issue I will discuss will be the choice of niche.

The topic of you page is what will attract relevant advertisers to your page and is an important

feature that will determine future monetarization.

Choice of niche

You can easily notice that there are some main themes of Instagram pages. This didn’t happen

by chance. You can compare Instagram to a jungle – the best pages that accumulate most

revenue survive because their founders find their motivation to continue developing those

pages in exactly that revenue. A lot of people won’t be trying to build an Instagram empire if

they knew from the very beginning that there is no chance that they monetize it. What this

means is that a high percentage of pages survive exactly because their creators make money

out of them or see potential of doing that in the future. I will now explain how this is relevant

to the choice of niche.

Advertisers choose specific pages because they know that the people following them would be

interested in exactly their products. What this means is that food companies will be choosing

food pages to post their products. Going up the chain – companies invest in pages with

followers who are interested in their products, followers subscribe to pages knowing that they

will continue posting similar content and their subscription is a good indicator of their interest

and finally, the founders of social media pages choose their niche or topic that will later make

them money. The ones who choose a bad niche and are not making money (from the jungle

example) will seize to exist and so only the most successful that choose the right niche will

attract advertisers and survive.

There are a few obvious successful niches that keep on growing in Instagram. The first one is

the motivation/luxury niche which attracts luxurious and sport companies. Watches, sport-kits,

tech – the possibilities in that niche are endless. The second big niche I want to mention is the

food one. A lot of food companies (for example ‘Deliciously Ella’) are using Instagram as their

main method for advertisement. Next we have fashion. Instagram is one of the best ways to

follow new trends and people know that. That’s the reason they follow fashion pages and

advertisers focus exactly these accounts. We have a lot of other topics that are proven to be

successful but what I want to talk about next is influencers with personal pages. These are

people who become famous with their lifestyles. Models, chefs and sports people – whatever

you do if it’s interesting for your followers you will be successful and will be a good source of

exposure for advertisers which are relevant to your way of life.

So as you see, the niche you choose is of great importance. The other factor you need to take

into consideration when choosing your page’s topic is what will be interesting to you as well.

If you’re not really a food enthusiast, you will find it quite difficult to post different hamburgers

and cakes on a daily basis. So think about what you’re really passionate about and what will

be successful in the future before creating your page.

Goal

Before posting the first pictures in your page you should decide what your main goal is going

to be. Is the purpose of your page to influence others, is it to make money on its own or promote

the brand you created or will create in the future? This goal will determine what you will be

sharing with your followers. Let me give an example – if you’ll be promoting your personal

brand you might be mixing your products with other posts that are relevant to the good or

service you’re selling. That way, the people that will start following you will all be people that

are interested in your products. I will also explain a bad strategy so you see what the difference

between approaches is. If you are going to start a sport-clothing company but keep on posting

suits and motivation quotes, once you start advertising your own brand no one will be buying

the sport-kits so your page will fail its purpose.

Research

This is probably the most important thing to do before you start the actual posting. You must

do you research so you gain knowledge. More knowledge will increase the change of your page

being successful. The more you examine the more you’ll notice the moves which work and the

mistakes that others do and might bring you down. You’ll be researching all the time once you

start your Instagram page but it’s important to do at the very start as well.

A few things you should do:

1) After you choose your niche compare different successful pages with ones that don’t

get as much engagement and try to establish the main traits that make one successful

and the other one not so. For example – font, type of pictures, use of follow/unfollow

method (extremely bad for future engagement), consistency, posts per day (from my

experience the most successful profiles post 3-4 times a day). These differences will

vary according to the niches and the size of the accounts you are examining.

2) Read as much as you can related to the social network you will be developing your

page on. There are tons of articles online and books that are similar to this one. Every

author has his own strategy and there is something you can learn from every single

piece of information.

3) Another crucial method of research is learning from people who own successful pages.

There won’t be many people who will refuse to provide sheer information with a fellow

colleague so just text someone and wait for a response.

4) Research which programs will be best for the type of content you’ll be creating. The

only way to do that is to try working with different ones and see which one gives the

best result. We will discuss software a bit more in one of the next chapters.

Name and profile picture

A lot of people underestimate the importance that your account’s name will have. The first

thing people see, to say it differently, the thing that attracts people to check the content of your

page will be your name and profile picture. With the growing of the niche, being original in

your choice of name and picture while staying relevant to the content you’ll be creating might

seem like a daunting task. However, if you put the time and effort to find the right name and

create an original and interesting profile picture the effects will be quite noticeable at a later

stage. Attracting more people to your page would mean that with the same percentage of people

who like your content and start following you, you’ll be gaining a lot more with the right name

and profile picture.

Let me explain this further. Imagine that you are using the username ‘gr1nd__andhusl79’. This

is a strikingly unattractive and unoriginal username. Let’s say that with that username you

attract around 50 people on a single day. However, your content is good so 60% of the people

who check your profile start following you so that’s 30 new followers each day. Now, if your

name was instead ‘motivational.quotes’ which is a much more attractive and straightforward

username and you’ll be having more people clicking on it. Let’s say twice more than the people

that would click on the other one – 100. With the same content (60%) you’ll be gaining 60 new

followers every day instead of 30. With a stylish profile picture that number might double.

During my personal experience of a year and a half on Instagram I learned quite a lot about

this issue, I’ll now provide a few tips on how to decide on a username and profile picture:

1) Choose a username that is closely related to your content. People who check your

profile usually expect to find posts that are relevant to their initial impression of the

page (this is what brought them to your account in the first place). 2) Choose a username that is as clean as possible. What this means essentially is that it

shouldn’t contain too many dots and dashes. A lot of people find that annoying,

unattractive and unprofessional. If you do your research on big pages you will see that

almost all of them have a username that contains a maximum of one dash or dot. 3) Design your own profile picture. This might seem as a pretty self-explanatory points

but I mean more than just designing a picture using a plain logo creation program.

Think it through, examine the idea behind your profile, use the appropriate software

and create something that will take you more than 10 minutes and which will fit your

page specifically. 4) Synchronize it all. That’s the art of merging your ideas and very few can handle it

properly. That’s what makes your page unique and bring up the number of not only

followers, but actual fans of the page. Synchronization starts with name and profile

picture and ends with interaction and expression which is why I decided to add it as a

final point here.

Bio

Your bio is the second thing your followers will see so most of the points that were relevant to

the username and profile picture are relevant here as well. However, you have more freedom

in your bio so you can add different information there. What I think is good to do is to make it

simple but powerful. What this means essentially is to not add too many emoticons and express

the main pillars of your page. For example, if you are a motivational page, something like that

might be – success, passion, progress separated by one type of clean emoji. Bio like this

followed by a promotional link or a link to your website will provide the information and idea

behind your page in a simple and straightforward manner that won’t take much time to decipher

(as opposed to adding many emoji and too much information.) Sometime if you use a link and

it is not self-explanatory it might be good to add a word or two to it just so people know what

you’ve put there. For example, ‘- Nike clothing brand’ after the actual link will indicate that

this is the website of the sport clothing brand ‘Nike’.

Content creation

Your content is the essence of your profile. It is an entire artistic process and like any other, to express your ideas properly you need to put in the effort. Of course, there are a lot of details and I’ll discuss the most important of them in the next couple of paragraphs.

Style, quality and pace

For your page to be successful you need to choose a specific style that you follow. Your followers chose you because all your posts have something in common, something that they found attractive and want to see more of. Whether you purposefully chose that thing or it happened by accident, you must have it in your future posts as well so that you remain interesting to your current followers. You can check most of the big pages on Instagram and what you’ll notice is that all of them have a certain style. The truth is they succeeded because they were following that particular style for which people started following them in the first place. One example is @thinkgrowprosper. The black and white (now brown as well) style is what grabbed people’s attention and made them acknowledge the thoughtful quotes that he uses. Another example can be @millionaire_mentor with his luxurious pictures and simple but impactful quotes. Make your research and choose your style. I will discuss this uniqueness with some other important points in a few paragraphs. Consistency of quality is also very important. If your quality deteriorates that will without doubt have an effect on you daily growth and it’s downhill from there. That’s why you should put in the time and effort every single day to create or find good content for your followers to see. This will seem quite difficult to do in the beginning but your pace will change once you get used to following a schedule. You will be creating better posts in less time if you are perseverant enough. When I first started it used to take me 40-50 minutes for a post so I had to use other people’s content all the time. I kept on designing my own pictures and now once I developed my own mechanism of creating, it takes me no more than 10 minutes per post. You can always push yourself to spend one hour before bed for content creation. If you want to be successful, you must be consistent with your quality.

Programs There’s a lot of different software out there for you to choose from. What I would recommend is using more than one program for editing because different programs are good for different purposes. Different pages will find different software more appropriate for them. There are also a lot of analytics and communication programs which are great for growing a social media page. I will give my personal preferences but you might find something else that works for you better:

1) PicsArt – Great for cropping and some other visual editing. I used to use it for finding background for my quotes as well

2) Over – A wide variety of stylish fonts. 3) Instagram analytics (rainbow shortcut) – Accurate analytics over a big period 4) Social Blade – Great for researching other pages 5) Telegram – The best app for networking with other users 6) Phonto – An even wider variety of fonts (I personally prefer Over)

Finding material The next thing I want to discuss is what sources to use for material to create your content. Depending on what niche you chose these will vary. However, there’s a lot of talented photographers on Instagram that work in various niches and who don’t mind using their photos as long as you mention them in the caption and give them credit. Your content is basically promoting their work and bringing more people to their own profiles. That’s why you’ll often find people thanking you after you transformed their work to create something as you see it through your lenses. A useful tip for quote pages is to find their quotes using websites like brainyquotes.com and even Google itself by typing in the word that they want to find a quote related to. What I do is I first find a picture that I think is synchronizing well with the other posts on my page and then think of what word fit well with that picture. For example – I find a picture of a man climbing a mountain. The first thing that come to my mind when I see that picture is ‘top’. I search for the phrase “top quotes” in Google or just top in one of the specific quote websites and then carefully choose between the different options. Try to find what fits the specific picture you chose the most.

Be original and different but don’t shock your followers

Don’t try to copy other people because first of all, you lose the pleasure of seeing people react to your own idea and work and second – most of the profiles on Instagram constantly copy each other so there is a sea of similar profiles and the chances of someone preferring yours to someone else’s decrease. Most successful businesses in general try to provide something different from their competition and that’s why they are chosen over the rest. However, it’s important to remember that you followers subscribed to your page because of something that they liked and switching your content too fast (shocking them) might drive them away and reduce your engagement. For that reason, as said before, try to be faithful to your style or if you’re making any changes, make them gradually.

Consistency

“Consistency always leads to excellence. Whatever you do in life always be consistent.”

As with any other serious initiative, consistency is key for success. This chapter will concentrate on the reasons for that and essentially how to establish that consistency in your work.

Knowledge

I already examined this question a bit but now I want to explain how it is related to the issue of consistency. Self-analyzation is a serious process that takes a lot of time and effort. You need to know how other pages are doing – so you can indicate what works and what doesn’t; what your followers like – so that you can develop these sides of your profile and your own profile – to understand what your progress is. You can use the aforementioned programs for most of these purposes or just continuous research on the social media platforms themselves.

Schedule Following a strict schedule is also of crucial importance. Once you know when your followers are most active, posting at the right time can boost an average post to a viral one. What would be good for your page is to also synchronise your schedule with your interaction with other users since they will be commenting, liking (engaging in general) since the first minutes after you post and the first 1 hour is crucial for determining how a post will do in the future. More on that interaction in the next step. When you post will also determine your audience. For example, if you post at American active time (let’s say you want to attract more Americans) you will get followers from that geographic area and less from other areas because of the difference between the time zones. When you post also depends on what type of content you’re posting. Let’s say you are from the food niche and have a picture of a nice cup of coffee and a croissant. You want more American followers. What you would do is choose an early morning hour in EST because you would get more engagement from that part of the world posting the breakfast picture in the morning.

Posts per day How often you post will depend on the size of your page. Bigger pages can afford to post more frequently because their followers will get annoyed and unfollow harder than if it was a small page and also because their posts get shown (supposedly) to a smaller percentage of their followers. From my personal experience the minimum number of posts for good engagement is three times a day. Creating three different posts might seem a lot now but once you get used to doing that every single day and develop your own method it will become much easier to be consistent. What I would recommend is creating your content at once. It is faster since you get into your own zone of creating after spending some time on a post; it is easier to be consistent with one style; and lastly you will be able to follow your schedule strictly the next day. It might seem a lot to spend an hour on a daily basis but discipline is key for success.

Why should I interact?

To start, we are going to say that interactions are one of the most important things if you are

aspiring to build a constantly growing page on Instagram, because of the fact that this social

media platform is based on the network principle. And if you don’t know what this principle

is, explained in the simplest way, it is when you comment or like a photo of another page, then

your followers can see that you have done that and therefore they can see the page. Some of

your them will actually open it and they might do the same thing or even follow that particular

page. Then their followers see that and this cycle repeats until their “following feed” is filled

up with new activities. This is how Instagram works and if you know how to use this principle

you might be a step ahead from the others.

How can I interact?

Before giving you the answer to this question, we though that it might be important for you to

know that there are many types of interactions on Instagram, but we are going to focus on the

two most important ones, which are vital for you: the one with other pages, which you can

collaborate with, and the one with your followers, who should feel as they were your friends

and whether you believe it or not, but most of them will actually need you to be their friend, to

whom they can unburden themselves.

Interaction with other pages:

You can (l)earn a lot by collaborating with other pages, but to do that you have to know, with

which pages will you be able to work together. Do a little research and try to find as many

pages as possible not only with the same follower base as yours, but also make sure that their

followers are ACTIVE. To do that you first need to check the statistics, related to the growth

of the page, on socialblade.com and also look for their last 10 posts to see if the likes, which

they get are consistent and equal to yours. After you have found “THE PAGES” you try to get

in touch with them and ask if they want to do a shout out for shout out, which can be a repost

or a screener. The repost is just a normal picture, taken from the other account, while a screener

can also be a single picture or a compilation of posts. To make the most out of it try to boost

those reposts/screeners with around 20-30 comments in the first 5 minutes, but don’t do it too

fast, because you might get banned, just comment in a time interval of 5-10 seconds.

Examples of screeners:

In order to make it a more straightforward process, it is recommendable for you to participate

in the different engagement groups (Engagement, Screener, Story shout out, Repost) in the PP

network, which will help you get in touch with the right people and save you a lot of time in

trying to find them by yourself. Depending on what you want and how much time you can

invest in it, you chose on which one to focus. For example, if you want to improve your

engagement, but followers are not your main goal, you have to be active in the repost group.

On the other hand, if you want more followers you have to be consistent with the screener and

story shout out groups. What is really important is that you should not abuse of those groups.

You should try to find the balance between posting a good content and engaging with others,

otherwise it might have a negative impact on your page. You have to take into consideration

the size of your page, because if it is still small you need to restrain yourself from posting many

screeners, if it is big, you have more freedom, but as we just said, it is not recommendable to

abuse of those groups. The engagement group is somewhere in the middle, because it helps

you get more likes and also more followers and it is one of the least damaging ways of growing

your page. The best strategy is to be active in all of the groups, but as we mentioned, the most

important thing is to be MODERATE.

Another way of engaging with others is by liking and commenting posts of account that are not

only similar to yours, but also of pages that really inspire you. When you find someone whose

account you love, check out the similar accounts recommended by Instagram. Then engage,

engage, engage. If you truly engage with someone, there is a big chance of you appearing on

their top comment section2, which will definitely get you some followers, but make sure that

your comment is not a generic one. There is also a possibility of them popping over to your

feed and seeing what you’re all about. If they like what they see they might even follow you.

Interaction with your followers:

Followers are more important to leaders than leaders are to followers and because of that the

interaction with them is as much important as the one with the other pages. A good way to

show those who follow you that you are a real person who is their friend is by replying to the

personal messages, which they send you and also to the comments, which they put on your

posts. If someone takes the time to leave you a meaningful message/comment, you should to

the same by responding back, which can be extremely beneficial for you because Instagram

will see that you are not a robot, and therefore your growth can be boosted. Show your

followers that you are grateful for their constant support, because they are the fuel of your page

and by treating them in a special, warm way they will appreciate it!

Stories can also be useful when it comes to engaging with your followers. By asking them

direct questions like “What motivates you?” or “What is your greatest fear?”, your followers

will see that you care about them and they will start “bombing” you with personal messages.

An example of such story:

Prepare yourself to give a good and honest answer, NOT A GENERIC ONE, to all of them,

which takes time, but can be extremely beneficial for you because Instagram will start

considering you as a real person and not a robot, which can boost your growth. You can also

use the captions of your posts to ask your followers what do they think, which can even start a

healthy discussion on the post. Far too many people treat the Instagram caption as an

afterthought, and although this social media platform is considered as a visual one the captions

are valuable. A good caption, believe it or not, probably won’t be just a few words. The best

Instagrammers in the world tend to tell a story, ask a question or use fun hashtags or emojis.

Spending time carefully crafting the perfect caption will bring your image to life and help your

followers relate to you and your content.

To interact with your audience, you can also run different contests (Like, Comment, Regram)

and competitions. The only limitations here are your capital and your creativity.

Last, but not least you can ask you followers if they enjoy the content, which you are posting

and even ask them to send you what they want to see, which depending on your niche can be

quotes, beautiful destinations or even what cars they would like to see in the future. This will

make them think that they are contributing to your success and will give them a feeling of

belonging.

So, if you want to be successful on Instagram you have to take into consideration that it is not

called social media for nothing. You need to be social to master it. You need to INTERACT

with others!

1. Active followers: followers who are engaging with the page, which they follow. To see if a

given page has active followers, just compare the follower base with the average likes. Have

in mind that depending on how big the page is, the engagement will be different. Normally, for

the big ones, the engagement rate is around 2%-3%, for the others it is from 4% to 8%.

2. The top comment section is when you comment on another page’s post and it can be actually

seen from the others as one of the two main comments. Normally, the top comments are from

the biggest pages/accounts, but there are always exceptions.

We have discussed what you should do in order to grow your Instagram page, but if you want

to have a wider perspective you should pay some attention to the don’ts, which we are going

to reveal to you in this chapter.

Harmful Strategies!

When we started our pages, we thought that the so-called follow/unfollow method1 will really

get us to the top. And although we were getting some followers, after spending a great deal of

our time, using this strategy, we had to get rid of our pages because of the fact that we were

getting around 300 likes from more than 30 000 followers and it was embarrassing. The reason

for this happening is that by using this strategy you attract new people to your page, but none

of them will be active, none of them will be genuinely interested in what you are doing or

posting, which will damage your engagement. The problem is that via the internet you have

access to a broad range of information, information, which you should always think critically

about because you never know what is real or fake, what is good or bad. The majority of the

Instagram strategies, which you can read about on the world wide web, can do nothing else

than ruin your page.

1. The follow/unfollow method is the process of following other accounts, which you unfollow

at the end of the day, hoping that this will attract their attention and they will follow your page.

Bots, fake followers and likes!

Yes, we are talking about those advertisements, which can get you hundreds of followers

instantly, but the problem is that they will also kill your page. First of all, it is obvious that you

are taking advantage of the fake likes, because it is just not normal to have less than 10 000

followers and to be having around the same number of likes on your post. This makes your

engagement look bad and as it is obvious that you are getting fake likes, you are making a bad

first impression to potential clients.

In the case of buying fake followers, you will get what you want to: a number, but at the end

you will lose it all because Instagram constantly purges fake followers! Another thing is that

by buying fake followers you will kill your engagement as none of them is actually ACTIVE,

which means that none of them will ever engage with your posted content. The more you buy,

the worse it becomes! Similarly, fake followers don’t buy products or promote your page and

if you want them to help you stand out from the crowd and make brands work with you, fake

followers are not the right option. And we can firmly say that buying fake followers is

POINTLESS.

Don’t buy followers or likes in order to fool your audience or establish social proof. YOU CAN

GET BANNED! It is better to use Instagram to build a genuine relationship with your audience

and engage with them.

We all have had bad periods, they are part of the whole journey and if you don’t believe us

take a look at the stats of some of the biggest pages on Instagram. Here we will give you a good

example of @motivationmafia, which is one of the leading motivational pages on this social

media platform with more than 1.7 million followers.

As you can probably see, this page is currently going through a really bad period having a

negative daily average growth. However, it is also a page, which is experimenting constantly

different styles and strategies right now, in order to find what is the reason behind the bad

results. This is what we encourage you to do, to try to find what causes your bad performance

(low growth, bad results, etc.) and try to fix it. Sometimes one of the solutions can be to repost

your most liked pictures, which will show your followers that you are still the page, which they

initially followed and this might bring your overall engagement up. If it does not work, start

experimenting, but as we already told you, do not make drastic changes. Take it step by step,

trying new things, which you have seen that work for other pages and finally you might find
