Obesity in children is abig problem, particularly in North America and Europe. In Peru, Approximately twenty five percent of children are overweight.

Lack of exercise is one of the main reasons for this. Activities such as playing computer games are becoming more and more popular. Fewer children are doing enough physical activity each day and this can have damaging consequences for their future health.

Doctors recognize that regular exercise is important for both physical and mental well- being. Think about your daily routine. Do you have a healthy lifestyle? What types of physical activities do you do?

How often do you exercise? What activities can you do each day to ensure you exercise enough?

There is evidence to show that children do better at school and have good social skills important for building strenght and confidence . It is recommended that children are physically active for at east sixty minutes per day.

Tere are many advantages in joining a sports team, but it does not matter if you do not like sports . Just think about how you can incorporate exercise into your other everyday activities.

An activity that involves only a little movement is callled a sedentary activity. Watching television is a common example of this . Over fifty percent of children watch television for around three hours per day! Watching television can be particularly unhealthy

because children are more likely to snack at the same time.

Other sendentary activities include reading, listening to music, using the computer, and doing homework.

Most physical activities take place outdoors. Unfortunately, many parents and children today are worried about “Stranger danger.” This is the worry that child will be hurt or taken by someone that they don’t know . Road safety is also a concern for many parents. Meanwhile, many children say it is too dark or cold to play outside in winter.

What factors prevent you from doing outdoor activities? Do you have friends or family you can practice with?

Kids who enjoy sports and exercise tend to stay active throughout their lives. Staying fit can help improve self-esteem, maintain a healthy weight, and decrease the risk of serious illness such as high blood presure, diabetes, and heart disease. It is OK if you are not interesed in traditional sports but it is important to find other ways to keep active. What can you do?
