“How lucky I am to have something that

makes saying goodbye so hard.” Winnie the Pooh

My two-year Presidential term is ending. This final newsletter article is difficult to write. In

reality, this isn’t goodbye to the Yorba Linda Woman’s Club but it is a conclusion in a chapter

of our club’s history. I have thoroughly enjoyed representing a group of the most special

women in the community. Your selfless attitudes and generous natures have been awe-

inspiring and a constant source of encouragement to me.

I was beyond inspired at our recent Orange District Convention. The Yorba Linda Woman’s

Club won an unbelievable amount of recognition for good deeds performed during 2017. As

Dean, Linda Queen submitted your project and program reports; the judges wisely rewarded

NEWS FROM OUR VICE PRESIDENTS

Annual Scholarship & Art Awards Ceremony

Thursday, May 3rd @ Community Center

6:00 pm Refreshments & Music / 7:00 Ceremony Begins

Ladies, please come on THURSDAY (this week) to celebrate the achievements, talents and futures of local high school students AND the continued winning success of Yorba Linda Woman’s Club! Through our Fall & Spring craft fairs this year we raised the $25,000 that will be presented. Our club is more than 100 members strong – let’s show the community how proud we are of our Club accomplishments, as well this great group of young people. (Continued on Page 3)

your hard work. Please attend the May General Meeting where we will celebrate each other

and thank the chairpersons who devoted their time to spearhead the missions. The highlight of

the Convention was the Installation of the 2018-2020 District Officers, including our own Past

President, Marcia Willett (incoming District President) and our own Past Treasurer, Nancy

Capel (incoming District Treasurer). Congratulations to both of these ladies who have offered

to dedicate their time to the future success of GFWC at the District level.

“When one door closes, a window opens.” I will now close my door and look for the open

window. I imagine I will see President Linda Queen’s fresh ideas, along with new and exciting

opportunities for club members and those who will benefit from our projects. If Linda has as

much support as you have shown me, she and our club are on a winning path. The newly

elected officers will also be installed at the May General Meeting. Your presence is requested

and, trust me, it will be very appreciated by the new administration.

It is now my final time to write that Your Time is Your Gift to Others. Words simply can’t

express my thanks for all the gifts you have given me during the past two years.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

The Human Exploitation And Trafficking unit (HEAT) was created in April 2013 by the Orange County

District Attorney (OCDA). In the Spring of 2013, Proposition 35 passed with an 81% approval vote. It

mandated increased penalty for human trafficking and reformed human trafficking laws. Human trafficking

is the second largest criminal enterprise in the nation. It is estimated to be a 150-billion-dollar industry

worldwide. California is the worst state active in human trafficking with Orange County as the

second worst county active in human trafficking. On average 8 new victims of trafficking are identified.

Orange County District Attorneys have a 4-prong attack used by HEAT to combat human trafficking called

PERP.

• Prosecution: Aggressively pursue prison sentences for traffickers.

• Education: Increase public awareness and teach law enforcement to identify and investigate cases and

assist victims.

• Resources: Collaborate with community and law enforcement partners and provide resources for

victims.

• Publicity: Create a public awareness campaign by publicizing convictions for traffickers and sex

purchasers. (Continued on Page 6)

Page 6: YORBA LINDA LIGHTS

(Continued from Page 5)

H.E.A.T. is very good at what they do and earlier in the fight they were often sent to other cities to train other

District Attorneys how to investigate and prosecute a human trafficking case. It is through their success that

prison sentences began to increase. They are an indispensable part of the Law Enforcement arm in the fight

against human trafficking. We sit behind them in the courtroom when we attend a sentencing hearing. It

shows the Judge that citizens from the community care about the convictions of traffickers.

EDUCATION COMMUNITY SERVICE

This has been an active year for the education committee. We have been active with projects at the Yorba

Linda Library with our display in February, our Topaz School projects, and our collection of box tops.

Kudos to Mary Lien and her wonderful volunteer readers and to Margaret Donovan for her leadership in the

book collection for the Topaz Elementary School library. Our members were awesome at donating hundreds

of books. Who knows, maybe some of these students will be applying for our scholarships in the future.

We will continue to collect Box Tops for Education for the remainder of this year and

next year. This year we collected 294 box tops for Topaz, for a donation of $0.10

each for a total of $29.40. Check your General Mills food boxes and other foods

for

HOME LIFE COMMUNITY SERVICE

Relay for Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Relay is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in thousands of communities and 27 countries. Volunteers give of their time and effort because they believe it's time to take action against cancer. Join us to remember our loved ones lost, honor survivors of all cancers, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society make a global impact on cancer.

This year’s Relay will be May 19-20, 2018 from 9 am – 9 am at Canyon High school. The theme is Celebrating

Life’s – Moments, Milestones, and Memories. We are looking forward to a very successful event with

Placentia, Brea and Anaheim Hills. There will be lots of activities, food, information and fun for the family!

If you haven’t registered yet, you still have time. Go to www.relayforlife.org and search for Yorba Linda

Woman’s Club or Relay for Life of the Canyons. There is no charge to register. Once you have signed up,

(Continued on Page 8)

send emails to friends and family for donations, read about the various ways you can raise money, and help

spread the word about our event. Our club has consistently been one of the top fundraisers and I hope to

continue the tradition.

Our campsite is #28 near the Kids’ Camp. Many of the Team sites will have their own fundraisers ranging

from food, gift cards, jewelry, etc. There will be a silent auction from 9 am – 5 pm on Saturday with a variety

of items to bid on including something from our team. Our site fundraiser will be colored ribbons signifying

the different types of cancer. We hope to have participants wear them and have them on display. We are at

$4,665.00 toward our goal of $10,000.00. Keep up the requests to friends and family!

April Showers bring - - more May projects for the two sewing groups. The two groups will be busy once

again, but there is one difference this month. The Sew Kind will not be meeting on the first Thursday (due

to the fact that the Art Contest needs to use the room that day), so this group will meet on the 3rd Thursday

this month instead. Same place and time, just a different day. The Threads of Love group will meet on the

2nd Thursday as usual.

If there are new members who are interested in seeing what we do in each of these sewing workshops, please feel free to come by and check it all out. The next workshops will be:

Sew Kind Workshop; May 17 from 1:00-3:00 pm in the Clubroom, YL Community Center Threads of Love Workshop; May 10 from 1:00-3:00 pm in the Clubroom, YL Community Center

excitement. Historical novels and mystery books are two of the recurring themes in

THANK YOU

Thank you to the Yorba Linda Woman’s Club for donating $150 to Mercy Ships

Charity under the International Outreach Program. It is the world’s largest

floating hospital offering state-of-the-art free health care to some of the

world’s poorest citizens. Since its founding, Mercy Ships has performed more

than 1.7 million services impacting more than 1.9 million people serving

urgent surgical needs for the forgotten. Our donation will be doubled by a

donor making an even greater impact to international people without regard of race, gender, or religion

because of the generous donation from the Yorba Linda Woman’s Club. Again, thank you.
