Dominica

DOMINICA (PRONOUNCED Dom-in-eek-a) is the largest of the Windward Islands, covers 289 square miles and has approximately 91 miles of coastline. It is located in the Eastern Caribbean between the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. The “Nature Island of the Caribbean” boasts a variety of natural attractions including 365 rivers and streams, waterfalls, hot sulfur springs, a boiling lake (considered the world’s second largest). More than a half-dozen types of whales and a dozen species of dolphins have been identified in Dominica’s waters – snorkelers, scuba and free divers from around the world experience award-winning sites with unique underwater springs, caves, and volcanoes, while they observe the abundant and colorful marine life like tropical fish, sponges, sea horses and coral. In addition to natural attractions, Dominica is very rich in cultural heritage, with long standing traditions in music, dance, theater, craft, art and the plain, simple life of its people. Everywhere on the island there are reminders of this heritage. The Creole language spoken by so many, the mix of French and English village names, the infectious Jing Ping music that makes you tap your feet, the aromatic creole cuisine, and so much more.

Program Activities Jungle Bay has been designing award-winning retreat programs for over 10 years so we understand what most group leaders and their participants will want to incorporate into their packages. We help you curate an itinerary in Dominica that blends the perfect balance of your teachings/activities with island adventures, spa therapies, delicious cuisine and optional activities around the resort. ASK US for a sample retreat itinerary if you need help envisioning yours. Your Facilitator Most first-time retreat organizers center their weekly itinerary around programs led by a single facilitator (yoga teacher, etc.). In future years as your group following grows, you may consider inviting assistants or other co-leaders to assist you. Your Theme Clarify Who You are Targeting Clearly define your ideal participant bases on the program themes: what is their level of experience, what are their interests, etc. Identify the Theme Each program is unique but generally speaking it may help you stay focused if you plan for 3 main learning objectives of your retreat. When you come up with your activities check to ensure they fit within the theme and objectives that will be appealing to your clients. NOTE: If in doubt, ask a few of your trusted students / clients to be sure it will be something that appeals. Putting it Together Get help from the experienced Jungle Bay Team, to finalize the program. They can assist with draft framework for your program. Our biggest tip is to not over-fill your program with too many yoga classes and so on that clients miss time relaxing and taking quiet time in nature if they wish. Active participants are always welcome to add on extra tours if they prefer not to relax during openings in your itinerary.

Available Jungle Bay Activities As you work with the Jungle Bay team in finalizing the itinerary, most 7-night retreats chose to include 3 tours in their program from the following list. Our guests’ favorite tours are: 9am – 3:30pm This tour is one of our guests’ favorites and should not be missed! Perdu Temps Hike ~ Retrace the footsteps of Dominica’s “maroons” (run-away slaves). This hike is part of the historic Perdu Temps trail and takes about one and a half hours each way through secondary forest, mainly flat terrain and some river crossings. It gets steep and narrow as you approach the end and opens up to an area often described as “Paradise” or “The Garden of Eden”! You are invited to pick fresh tropical fruits from the trees. Explore Pump’s bio diversified farm with a huge variety of exotic fruits and vegetables. Tour the “Medical Garden” with a wide assortment of healing plants/natural herbal remedies. Pump and his family warmly welcome you to their home, due to the close relationship they have with "Sam", owner of Jungle Bay. A vegetarian lunch is provided. ◊MODERATE ◊ 40 min. driving each way / 3 hours hiking round trip 9:00am-12:00pm or 2:00pm-5:00pm (half day) Snorkel at Famous Champagne Beach ~ Champagne Beach is part of the protected Soufriere Scotts Head Marine Reserve. Underground volcanic activity seeps through the ocean floor, then is cooled by sea waves and rises in a line of bubbles creating a memorable snorkeling experience. Fan coral, turtles and a variety of tropical fish are often sighted. ◊EASY ◊ 15 min. driving each way

10

9:00am-3:00pm Middleham Falls Hike & Trafalgar Falls ~ Explore the misty mountain trail to Middleham Falls taking in the lush rainforest vegetation along the way. Jaco parrots are occasionally heard or spotted along this trail. The end of the hike becomes a little steeper as you scramble your way down to the waterfall pool for a refreshing splash. Did you know that swimming in waterfalls exposes you to negative ions which are a purification to help counteract stress and strengthen your immune system? After hiking back, we will venture to Trafalgar twin waterfalls for a short walk (approx. 15 minutes) and another therapeutic swim. Packed lunch is provided. ◊EASY to MODERATE ◊ 55 min. driving to start / 2.5 hours of hiking total If you have very fit participants who are up for a challenge, you can add or exchange one of the above tours with Dominica’s highlight for highly adventurous hikers: 7:30am-5:00pm Boiling Lake Hike & Valley of Desolation ~ Explore Dominica’s famous "World Wonder" and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stops along the way include the mysterious Valley of Desolation, a soak in hot water pools, and have a sulphur mud facial. As a grand finale, plunge into the famous Titou Gorge as seen in Pirates of the Caribbean (Part 2). The hike is 3 hours each way, up & down fairly steep hills. A packed lunch is provided. ◊MODERATE to EXTREME ◊ 50 min. driving each way / 6 hours hiking round trip Feel free to exchange any of the above suggestions with our other activities. See our sample Jungle Bay Activities Schedule here.

Free evening or self-guided walking options on the property and nearby: 5:00pm-6:00pm Dominican plant and herb demonstration ~ This is an ideal opportunity to get to know more about the Dominican plants and herbs which you will discover during your hikes and on the Jungle Bay property. Learn their traditional uses and some health benefits. ◊EASY ◊ 4:00pm-5:30pm Caribbean Cooking Class ~ Learn how to prepare local Caribbean cuisine and take "a taste of Jungle Bay" home with you! Items from the Garden Tour will likely be included in the recipes. ◊EASY ◊ 4:30pm-5:30pm Jungle Bay Story ~ Learn about the inspiration, history and challenges of developing Jungle Bay. This is an opportunity to get first hand stories and ask questions. ◊EASY ◊ 5:00pm-6:00pm Dominica Drumming Class ~ Hear stories about the history of Dominican drumming and dance while learning to play traditional music like Jing Ping songs on authentic djembe drums. ◊EASY ◊

2:00pm-3:00pm Lime Heritage & Garden Tour ~ Take a walking tour around the Jungle Bay property. In the late 1800’s Morne Acouma was a famous lime plantation, the limes would be harvested from where the villas now stand, placed in buckets, then travel down pulley systems (in essence a zipline) to the waterfront below in Soufriere Bay where merchant ships would take the citrus fruits to London, England. Visit the Jungle Bay Garden including papaya trees, pumpkins, mangos, etc. and finish at the Jungle Bay Banana Planation. ◊EASY ◊

Getting to Dominica Flight and Ferry Dominica can be accessed from North America, Europe and the rest of the Caribbean. The island is located in the Eastern Caribbean, mid-way down the chain of Caribbean islands known as the Lesser Antilles, between the French islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. The island is an emerging ecotourism destination which is serviced exclusively by commuter flights and ferry services from the nearby islands Guadeloupe (2 hours), Martinique (2 hours) and St. Lucia (4 hours). Best flight connections from the USA are usually via Puerto Rico (SJU), Barbados (BGI) and Antigua (ANU) with a connection on www.liat.com to Dominica (DOM). Via Puerto Rico (SJU) also check www.seaborneairlines.com to Dominica (DOM). The island has two small airports. Douglas Charles Airport (DOM), the primary airport, is located in the north east of the island near the town of Marigot. Douglas Charles Airport accommodates propeller driven and Dash Eight aircraft. Canefield Airport (DCF) is a smaller commuter airport that typically accommodates smaller aircrafts. It is located near the capital city of Roseau, which sits on the southwest side of the island. CONTACT JUNGLE BAY to get help in finding the best routes for the dates you have in mind. Visas and Passports Dominica does not require a visa or any other document from Canadian, US, UK, German, Switzerland, France and several other nationals. Only a valid passport (with at least 6 months validity from travel date) and a return ticket is needed to travel to Dominica. Costing and Organizer Benefits Inclusive Pricing We will work with you on finding the right fit depending on your groups size and package elements. No minimum participants required Jungle Bay has no minimum number of group size requirements for you to benefit from our retreat group package rates. paying yourself: + Teaching Cost Jungle Bay will provide you with a package price for your participants. We will not publish this price so you may add your own fees on top if you wish to do so and publish the final price in your marketing materials. If you are unsure what to add on top for your own fees consider this advice from a frequent retreat organizer at Jungle Bay. Chrissy Carter said in her article published in the Yoga Journal: “The easiest way to determine your prices is to add a teaching fee to the cost per student. For example, if you’re teaching five classes during your retreat and you decide to charge each student $20 per class, you would add a $100 fee to your cost per student.” You can consider what feels right for your participants based on your own costs of travel, marketing and time teaching. Your Net Gain Through running a Jungle Bay retreat you will earn the following:

• the teaching fees that you add to the cost per student;

• Jungle Bay offers group organizers a complimentary package for a minimum number of packages sold. Speak to our retreat team to determine a custom plan for you;

• the reputation amongst your wellness community of now leading international retreats to an

award-winning wellness retreat center; and

• a memorable wellness experience in Dominica with adventure, relaxation, spa pampering and meaningful connections with your students/clients.

Marketing your retreat Jungle Bay will provide you with images and can help you edit your descriptions before they are sent to your community of followers. Below are ways in which you can effectively promote your retreat: Jungle Bay Calendar If your program is open to the general public we will be happy to post your retreat on our website calendar of upcoming events. Referrals will go to you directly to gain even more participants. We don’t benefit from this, it is simply to help you grow your attendees list. You can feel free to decline this option because we understand that some retreat leaders prefer not to have attendees whom they do not know. Personal invites Past retreat planners have told us that the most effective way to confirm participants on their group retreats is when they ask each person directly in an authentic way either in person, via phone, email or private message. Sometimes your circle of contacts will see the advertisement but not know if it is suitable for them so you reaching out will help them see if it a good fit for them. Word of Mouth While not all your contacts will be able to say yes due to schedules and other commitments, you may wish to also wish to ask your friends, family and connections to spread the word about your retreat. It will cast a wider net as to who sees the opportunity to go to paradise on a retreat with you! Email invitations to your “tribe” of followers Reaching out to your recent and current students is a perfect outlet to share the invitation to join your retreat. You can design a series of email fliers using free software such as MailChimp to showcase the beautiful photos of Jungle Bay along with your photo and highlights of what they can expect on the trip. Send regular email reminders to continue to plant seeds. Consider including an option at the bottom of the email that says “Forward to a friend” whereby they can share. BookYogaRetreats.com The organizer who holds the record for hosting the most yoga retreats at Jungle Bay (14 and counting is Petra endorses the website www.bookyogaretreats.com. You can post your event for free and only pay a small commission to them if you get any successful booking from the site. This can help you boost your number of enquiries if your event is open to the public. Print Collateral If you have a yoga studio or other physical locations that you meet your students or clients then consider printing color postcards to promote your retreat! There are options at sites like www.vistaprint.com and www.moo.com we love that they offer recycled and tree-free paper stock on request too! Partnerships Try to think of in-kind creative ways to entice help from your contacts to get the word out for your trip. Perhaps you know a graphic designer, podcaster, media influencer, etc. who can do promotional work for you in exchange for something you do for them like offering them a discount on your teaching fee portion of the package price. If they are excited about your trip they will spread the word! Social Media You can use free software such as Canva.com to create beautiful social media posts that will attract enquiries about your retreat. Ask your contacts to share or like the posts with their networks also.
