ECDEV UPDATE There is quite a bit happening right now within ecdev. The work of setting up our economic development corporation has begun. We are working with MNP to help us with the structure work as well as accounting, we have also asked Drew Mildon of Woodward & Co. to look after our legal work through this process.

The basic idea is to put the current and new businesses in a corporation to protect the Nations from liability and taxes. When we are doing this work we have to look at all of the different things that might happen to the Nations and try to plan accordingly. We will be having community meetings to ask for your guidance as well as to explain some of the processes that we are doing.

We are very happy to say that a couple of the “new” businesses that have started for the GNN are hitting their stride. Our GNN Marine Services crew has been steady all winter (even through some of the ugliest days on the water) with scheduled trips averaging 4 days a week. The crew has been complimented lots on their attention to detail and the safety of the crews being transported. It has been awesome to see that our GNN Marine Services crew has been written about in a couple of different publications (Western Mariner, Marine Harvest’s Wharf side newsletter) they deserve the great publicity!!

The tourism and GNN art and Gift shop have stopped regular operations but upgrades and improvements are being done to greatly enhance our customers experience next year.

There are going to be lots of jobs with the businesses within the Ecdev Corporation, I encourage you to apply for any postings.

GUARDIAN WATCHMEN UPDATE

The crew would like you to know that we are still out in the traditional territories- when the weather cooperates! We have been doing patrols into Seymour as well as up into Smith Inlet, we have to be very careful and keep an eye on the sea conditions.

Our program will be doing patrols from now until late fall, with the number of the patrols increasing as we head into summer. Our funding this year looks like we will be able to hire 2 Junior Watchmen for the summer and we are also looking for at least 1 and possibly 2 regular Watchmen, please keep your eyes open for those job postings!!

YOUTH RECREATION Greetings!! My name is Ross E Hunt Jr, I was recently hired as the new Youth Recreation Worker for the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations. I am grateful to have the opportunity to work within your Community and believe that in time, with consistency and trust, we can come together and enjoy the benefits that this community has to offer.

My first 2 weeks has been dedicated to program development, relationship building, networking, getting to know the community and volunteers, while gaining direction and input about what this program should provide for youth. Because it’s such a new program things are progressing slower than anticipated but the wheels are turning and will start to bear fruit. To start I will be taking 5 Youth from this community to the 11th Annual Gathering Our Voices Conference in partnership with Davis Henderson of Sacred Wolf Friendship Center. When I get back I would like to have an open discussion with input from community. I am excited to be here and look forward working for this community. I hope to help bring harmony to our Northern Communities, we are different, let’s celebrate diversity together. Let’s work towards our common cause: our children.

We hear in many fantastic speeches that “It takes a community to raise a child”, I hope to achieve this by unifying and bringing community back to our people. I believe that with open minds, open eyes, and open arms we can strengthen what we have always known, ‘UNITY’, ‘Walk Without Judgment’, ‘Have Unconditional Love’. Short term goals: 1. Have Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations representation for U-15, U-11 soccer for the upcoming soccer season (for any community member interested in helping achieve this please see me. ) 2. I am currently studying for my Class 4 Unrestricted Drivers to make use of the Recreation Van and its policies. PUBLIC WORKS Water results: The chlorine reading taken last week was 0.58, which was taken at #500 Tsulquate. The band manager asked me to test the water at the dead ends of our water system (dead ends - where the pipes end). I test at three different places each week and check the chlorine at the first place I go to. The chlorine helps to kill germs in our water system so we can have safe drinking water. Appliances: I can take away any hot water tanks, dryers, washers, fridges and freezers. Just let me know so we can arrange for a time to have them picked up. Seven Mile and Fox Disposal won’t take freezers or fridges if there is any type of food left in them. So PLEASE clean them out first, otherwise I won’t pick them up because I have nowhere to take them. Garbage bins: Seven Mile will fine the Band if there are any electronics or cardboard found in our garbage bins. As you may know by now, Fox Disposal will not empty the bins if any of these items are seen in the bins. The cardboard can be taken to the large recycling bins up by the swimming pool. I can take the electronics to Seven Mile to get rid of them there. The electronics are tvs, stereos, dvd players, computers and monitors. Last year the Conservation Officer said that they can fine the Band if the bins are left open which likely attract bears. Fox Disposal has put clips on the garbage bins so that they can clipped closed to keep the bears out. Every day I drive throughout the community to check how many bins are unclipped. Doing the bin check every morning and afternoon takes approximately an hour a day which leaves me with less time (only 6 hours a day) to do my other duties.

language revitalization and maintenance in relation to Indigenous wellbeing

For many years we have sensed that the retention and revitalization of Australian languages can lead to health benefits for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, but it is only rather recently that more concrete demonstrations of these views have Social Justice Report 2009

-and land, and opportunities for self-

Elsewhere we find instances of collaborations between language revitalisation efforts and those involved in health delivery. Such collaborations can be mutually beneficial as language documentation provides a clearer vision of cultural considerations for health workers. This paper will survey the growing interest in the link between language retention and revitalization, and, Indigenous wellbeing not just in Australia but other parts of the world, including British Columbia.

The data entry clerk will be entering this information from the forms into a database then doing a quality check to ensure accurate data entry. The successful candidate must be organized and punctual, with a positive, confident personality and no fear of speaking to an audience. • Perform Cultural Tours aboard a vessel and educate the passengers on sacred sites, animals and matters of cultural significance

• Assist vessel operators with tour preparation & cleanup of the vessels. Includes preparation of snacks, tea and coffee, and organizing the food stock for daily tours.

• Communicate via VHF with the vessels • Keep detailed tour passenger rosters and store trip information logs in an onshore

To Implement a Volunteer Home Visitor Support Strategy to provide informal supports to community members dealing with substance use. This includes, recruiting, training and supporting the Visitors;

Organize & Coordinate, with community volunteers, weekly & monthly activities that are alternatives to substance use. This may include events such as: Family Fun Nights, Dry Dances, Games Nights, Drop Ins, Halloween parties, Community Christmas Dinner, etc.

Provide monthly awareness and prevention programs concerning Alcohol, Drugs, HIV/AIDS, safe sex, solvent abuse and self care (e.g. workshops, A&D Awareness roadblocks, lifeskills training, FASD education, etc.);

Grade 12 and experience with organizing events, or community development education/experience;
