TREATY UPDATE

This edition in Yo News is written to help to inform community members about activities the Gwarsquosala-

lsquoNakwaxdarsquoxw Nations Treaty Team has been involved with over the past few months

Negotiations

Negotiations have continued to be scheduled on a monthly basis Meetings called Main table Meetings

are held between Negotiation Teams of the Federal (Canada) Provincial (BC) and us the Gwarsquosala-

lsquoNakwaxdarsquoxw Nations Members of our GN negotiation team include in addition to myself Chiefs Paddy

Walkus Willie Walkus and Tom Henderson Councilors Ernie Henderson and Gary Walkus

We prepared a draft ldquoland Counter offerrdquo to table with the two other governments As you may recall the

governments tabled a ldquolandcash offerrdquo to us last November 27 2014 at a meeting of our community at the

Wakas Hall

In addition to the areas that are essential because of their culturalhereditary and sacred significance we

stress the necessity of land to meet our communitiesrsquo economic goals In studies we have found that

logging companies have logged many very significant amounts causing us to fear few trees will remain for

our children and their children in the future

We stress the need to have much more area (than was ldquoofferedrdquo) so that we can use our lands and the

natural resources on them in ways that are important to us We need access to trees to meet our housing

needs access to timber for viable economic use access to forest for non-timber uses such as food

gathering bark carving canoes weaving etc We need access to trees and wood fibre for cultural

purposes such as to build a Bighouse here in Tsulquate as well as in our homelands of Barsquoas and Takush

We explain to the governments that we as Gwarsquosala-lsquoNakwaxdarsquoxw Nations have our own ways and that a

treaty should help us to continue our ways such that our communities will grow and thrive for all the

generations following us Our landsseas and resources made our ancestors and Nations strong and they

left us a legacy and responsibility to carry forward

Family Meetings


These meetings held with families of our Nations have been taking place since December 2014 To Date

we have met with 7 ndash 8 different family grouping of the Gwarsquosala and lsquoNakwaxdarsquoxw

The purpose of Family Meetings is to inform and educate about the Treaty Process as well as to

acknowledge our hereditary families and Chiefs Our goal is to insure that family members have a

chance to learn by receiving materials distributed asking questions and hearing from those involved with

the Treaty Team

The meetings have been well attended and I am pleased to see those with concerns and questions are

speaking out These meetings will continue and after every family has had an opportunity for one

meeting we will begin again with the families we started with until our community is informed and

prepared to consider an AIP (agreement in principle) vote and a move to the next stage 5 of treaty

negotiations

Comments

Our Treaty Office continues to support many community initiatives in addition to the above These

include Support to Elders (CoordinatorCouncilJanitorial) Youth (Digital Film Projects) (Technology for

GN School) CommunityFamily support Team support Bighouse Planning and Food Securitynutrition

Soon we will be hiring in the community to find a person to assist with a renewed Comprehensive

Community Plan (CCP) we have 2 TRMs (Treaty Related Measures)in the homelands during the next

few months to carry out necessary studies and work toward opportunities for members to liveworkvisit

once again in the homelands should they chose Also we work with Chief and Council to offer workshops

on governance and other subjects Council feel is necessary to improve their ability to better serve the

community now and into the future

First of all the Elders would like to send their deepest heart felt condolences to

Terrys family amp friends He was a very well respected man that was always willing

to lend a helping hand to his fullest capabilities He will be greatly missed by

many

The Elders Program has been on a slow pace over the last few weeks This being

noted Ernie Brian amp I have been doing some outside work to the building We

have started off with the deck Our next big project will be painting the entire

building Brian has done some work to the ramp to make it safer for those that have

scooters and for when it is wet

We have had a community member come forth with some video footage of kids

horsing around the Elders Center over the weekends Please be advised there are

surveillance cameras all around the building now Please teach your children to

respect other peoples property This building belongs to our Elders It needs to be

respected as you would respect their homes Trespassers will be dealt with in an

orderly manner

The Elders trip is well under way

We have received many phone calls and or messages about renting the Elders

Center for personal use The Elders have made a motion back in November of 2013

to close their building to the Community for personal functions It is now only open

to staff of the Administration building for work related functions and Elders

activities Their reasoning is for all the past vandalism and break amp entering where

two TVs have been stolen We hope you all understand and respect their decision

I received a suggestion from a band member to take a picture of before and after because your body could

see a big change in just a monthrsquos time Thatrsquos a great idea If you want we can take your picture before

Letrsquos make this a great month

The pool will be closing on Saturday June 13 and reopening Monday August 10
