The new Verdae YMCA will open in September! We invite you to stop by for a visit and check out the strength and cardiovascular equipment, the group exercise classes, and meet our wellness professionals. This wellness–focused branch is designed for easy “stop and go” fitness. Based on our advance research, this area of Greenville is ripe for the expansion of our Y mission. We look forward to providing for the needs of this south Greenville community. For those of you who are PATH members this adds yet another location for you. Besides the four family branches and the GHS Life Center, PATH members can enjoy the Verdae Y. For those of you who are not yet on the PATH, it is a tremendous value—six locations throughout Greenville, at an affordable price—the ultimate in convenience.

September is the beginning of the school year and the start of our Y after school program. We have been busy through the summer working on enriching our programming. Enhancements such as swim lessons, dance, art, karate, and physical education will be some of the options available to your child. All of our youth programming at the Y is done with the purpose of nurturing your child’s potential and is consistent with the building blocks that help children become successful adults.

Y Camp Greenville will wind up its Centennial year this fall with excitement! The “High Atop the Blue Ridge” centennial book about Camp will have been released by the time you receive this and can be purchased through our Camp Greenville website. The story of Camp can also be viewed at the Upcountry History Museum in a special Camp exhibit beginning this October and the book will also be for sale there (the profits of which go to Camp). To assist with funding our beautiful, historic Camp, there are two major fundraisers coming up: the Blue Jean Ball (dinner, music and auction) on October 4 at the Greenville Country Club and the Monk Mulligan Shootout golf tournament at The Cliffs Valley on October 9. Visit the campgreenville.org site to register for the fun and help this great cause.

The third annual YMCA Prayer Breakfast will once again be held the Thursday before Thanksgiving—November 15—at the Caine Halter Family Y, beginning at 7 a.m. This is a unique opportunity to come together as a community to give thanks to God for our many blessings. So often the holidays are a source of stress. Here is a good antidote to that: a shared meal, inspiring music and prayers, and a thoughtful message that will warm us and prepare us to usher in the holidays with a spirit of gratitude. I hope I see you there.

Yours in health,Scot BaddleyPresident and CEOYMCA of Greenville

At the Y, we encourage young athletes to get to know each other. During practices, athletes alternate their partners. Warm-ups, cool-downs, and skill-building activities also help athletes learn each other’s names.Team members clean up after themselves at the gym or on the field.

Sometimes athletes haze newcomers or pick on certain athletes. At the Y, we know what’s happening and stop these behaviors. We find ways to let children lead. They can lead drills. They can referee a scrimmage. They can brainstorm ideas if the team gets into a slump. Whether it’s in sports, afterschool, day camp or child watch, we incorporate the 40 Developmental Assets to ensure your child’s ultimate success.

Teen ACHieverS

Teen Achievers is a proven program designed by the YMCA of the USA and Black Achievers to help under-served teens prepare for college and careers. The YMCA of Greenville has provided this program for the past two years but on a fairly small scale. Now, with the resources available that were formerly concentrated in the FYI Teen Center, we are expanding the Teen Achievers Program. With our lease expiring at FYI, Teen Services is expanding its outreach throughout Greenville County.

Teen Achievers now has six Greenville locations, and more are planned for the years to come. Each neighborhood location has a dozen or more teens and a volunteer leader, all overseen and trained by Teen Services to provide great programming. Volunteer professionals come in to speak to the teens about their jobs and their life path. Having this direct contact is vital to teens who may not have a knowledge of the vast career opportunities that lay before them.

Throughout the school year, each group meets weekly, then all the groups get together for a larger meeting and group activities twice a month.

The success of our teenagers is dependent on the quality of the time we spend with them and the role models available to them. Won’t you consider being a good role model and spend an evening or more explaining your career to these kids?

At press time, the Teen Achievers locations are: Sterling Community Center, Greenville Library West Branch, Greenville Library Ramsey Branch, Y Metro Office, Eastside Family Y, Heritage Community—Forestview Community Room.

open DoorSFinancial assistance keeps the Y available for kids and families who need us most. As the nation’s leading non-profit for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y uses your gift to make a meaningful, enduring impact right in your own neighborhood. At the Y, no child, family or adult is turned away because of an inability to pay. When you give to the YMCA, you move people forward and strengthen our community. www.ymcaopendoors.org

liveWell Greenville’s partners are making impacts throughout the county

Where you Work: LiveWell at Work Toolkit, a free resource to businesses looking to develop a comprehensive worksite wellness plan, is being piloted with three local businesses: YMCA of Greenville, Metromont and The Blood Connection. Check out the LiveWell at Work Toolkit at www.livewellgreenville.org

Where you play: two LiveWell partners are putting healthy play into action. The Children’s Museum of the Upstate has developed the first traveling exhibit around the CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) Curriculum, which is utilized in Greenville County Schools and many afterschool programs throughout the county. The exhibit features active games, a culinary creations kitchen, and other interactive opportunities to play and learn.

The Greenville Recreation District parks are also Living Well. With an increased demand for healthier options, Rhino and Greenville Rec have partnered with LiveWell Greenville and the Piedmont Health Foundation to introduce healthier foods and promote these options throughout the parks. Furman University is supporting evaluation of the project.
