ALEXANDER ROAD HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER TEAMS UNVEIL NEW SPONSORS

The Alexander Road boys’ and girls’ 1st soccer teams recently unveiled their new soccer uniform. Representatives from Kutama Tyres, who sponsors the girls' 1st soccer team were present to hand over the new shirts to the Alex girls. Both teams were to embark on their trip to East London where they would compete in the annual SA Sports Tours Soccer tournament. It was the first time that the girls’ 1st team would compete in this tour-nament. It was also the first time that they were acquiring a 1st team uniform. mSecure were unveiled as the team sponsors of the boys’ 1st soccer team. Marjorie Du Pisani, the Business Development Manager at MSecure said they were proud to be associated as a sponsor of the Alexander Road HS boys 1st soccer team and wished the team well before they departed for EL. SA Sports Tours Soccer Tournament – East London The Alexander Road High boys’ and girls’ 1st soccer teams embarked on the SA Sports Tours Soccer tournament held in East London from 25 – 27 June 2018. It was the first time that an Alex girls’ team competed in a tournament of this nature. Many of them are Grade 8 and Grade 9 learners who made it into the 1st team. They faced some tough completion from Kimberley Girls’ High, St Dominic’s Priory, Milnerton High (Cape Town) and Academy High (East London). Both teams finished in second position after the league stage to advance to the semi-finals of the tournament. A penalty save against St Dominic’s cost the girls’ 1st team a spot in the final, while the boys’ 1st team narrowly lost 1 – 0 to St Stithian’s in their semi-final match. The boys’ team in particular, played well, even suffering injuries to secure 3rd place in the tournament. The Girls’ team were hard pressed to secure 3rd place in a thrilling 1 – 0 win against a spirited Milnerton side. The coaches were well pleased with the teams’ successes and the Alexander Road students were praised for their courtesy during the tournament. Further to this success, Amber Botha was voted player of the tournament in the girls’ division; Camden van Rensburg was the top goal scorer in the boys’ under 19 division. It was particularly encouraging for the girls’ team to achieve 3rd place in their first outing. This bodes well for the future of a young team who have now had a taste of good things to come.

GIRL Fly Camp report (1-7 July 2018)

Skyla Ah Shene, Yolanda Pondo, Onesimo Ntsoeu, Nicole Palmer, Jaylene Jansen, Genevieve Hemmings and Gené Groenewald were selected to attend the Girl Fly Programme Africa Class of 2018 Aerospace and STEM camp in July, in the Magaliesburg. Girl had to apply and were selected as part of a group of 80 girls from across South Africa. The focus of the camp was to expose girls to different careers in Aviation. They were given different talks by mathematicians and pilots, and learned about flying drones, ‘flying’ in a flight simulator, doing robotics, programming and getting to know people from from different spheres of life in aviation.

Alex SALT Tour During the first week of the June holidays, the Alexander Road High School science club students, accompanied by Mr Oosthuizen, his family and Mr Austin, went on tour to Sutherland via Mossel Bay, Cape Agulhas and Cape Town. The first stop was at the Cango Caves where they were guided through the beautiful cave chambers. The natural limestone formations with varying colours are a spectacular marvel of nature. The next stop was at the Dias Museum where they spent that night sleeping in rondavels in Hartenbos. The next day was spent at the Southernmost Tip of Africa and at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens in Cape Town. Then the group visited the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station and the Cape Town Science Centre, where they participated in fun and educational games. The highlight of the day was the trip up Table Mountain. The following day they were ferried to Robben Island and were given a meaningful tour by a former inmate. A stop was made at Two Oceans Aquarium and the night was spent wandering around Canal Walk. Early Friday morning they journeyed to Sutherland to view the SALT telescope, which is the largest optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. The tour ended with a night of star gazing, which was by far a most calming and worthwhile experience. Collectively, all had a fantastic week away from home learning many new and interesting things at each of the stops. The tour was definitely worth the time and money, building friendships that will last and gaining experiences to always remember. by Dillon Classen and Bianca de Beer
