Year 1 Term Three OverviewWelcome to Term 3!

We hope you had an enjoyable holiday with your child. We look forward to continuing to be a part of your child's learning journey throughout the term.

EnglishThis term we will be learning about informationand explanation texts, exploring text purpose andlanguage features.Take home reading books will continue to bedistributed weekly as they remain an essentialpart of English practice both at home and atschool, along with Tricky Words and Jolly Phonicssounds.o Letter sounds and grammar will continue to

be taught through Jolly Phonics and JollyGrammar.

o We will resume Phonemic Awareness withinour literacy block through ‘Heggerty’.

MathematicsMeasurement:Using units of measurement

We will be exploring the three components ofmeasurement; objects (e.g. pencils/string), spaces(e.g. oval/Book Nook) and events (e.g. recesstime/brushing your teeth). We will use uniforminformal units to measure and compare lengths,mass and capacities of pairs of objects.

Number:Students will be revising reading, writing, modelling,and ordering numbers to 120. They will further explorethe number name pattern to support their knowledgeof number line sequence and location.They will begin to explore place value, countingcollections to 100 and partitioning numbers accordingto their place value. Building on their Natural mathstrategies we will be learning about changing the order,halves and secret code.

HistoryStudents will be looking at places, objects, communities and technology from the past and the present and withinthe context of the student’s own world.They will explore and explain how some aspects of daily life have changed over recent time while others haveremained the same.

TechnologiesDigital and Design technologies are integratedthroughout learning experiences across all areas.Children will have opportunities to practicelogging in to the computer and engaging with thesmartboard.

Child Protection ProgramThis term we will build on relationships and trust.We will also be exploring risk taking andemergencies by discussing consequences anddecision making.

SciencePhysical Science:Light and SoundThis term, students will explore how light and soundare produced by a range of sources and can be sensed.They will be exploring how their senses are used tolearn about the world around us i.e. our eyes detectlight, ears detect sound, and touch allows us to feelvibrations. They will investigate how sound is producedusing a variety of objects and actions such as striking,blowing, scraping and shaking.

Push and pull affectsExploring how objects move and change shapee.g. moving through air, water and land.
