We watched the children dance, deliver speeches and enjoy each other’s company. The children all looked lovely, just like the terrific children they are. This time of year always brings a lot of excitement, with the anticipation of the children going off to the secondary school of their choice, but also some tears of sadness at the prospect of leaving their friends as they go off to different schools. This year’s Grade 6s are no different in this regard. In fact, they seem to be a very close group, all being very respectful to each other, knowing also that they are individuals and all very different. As they move on to secondary school they will develop new friendships and begin regarding the world in a different way. They have strong values which their families and the school have instilled in them and they have the skills to reach out to people with help and support; they are the future leaders and contributors of our society. I am sure these children will grow into fine adults who will care about other people, our environment and our society and I look forward to hearing about the paths they take in their lives. In my speech last night I used a quote from Mother Theresa. It really encapsulates how we should live our lives in a positive manner as really, we only have today to make a difference. Newsletter No. 40 - Term 4– Week 11 Thursday 17 December 2015

GRADE 6 GRADUATION 2015 What a wonderful night it was last night. The Grade 6 Graduation for 2015 filled us all with great pride and joy.

YESTERDAY IS GONE. TOMORROW HAS NOT YET COME.

WE HAVE ONLY TODAY LET US BEGIN

Our Grade 6 children are beginning the next phase of their lives. As they move away from Kalinda on Friday December 18 to follow their own journeys, they have one thing in common – they all went to Kalinda Primary School and we are very proud they did! THANK YOU Many people have to be thanked for the Graduation Ceremony. Most particularly, the Graduation Committee headed by Steve Kenna. Thank you to the Committee for your time, effort and creativity. Thank you to Steve & Carmel for your commitment to these children and for the many hours over and above your heavy workload at this stage of the year.

Happy and Safe Holidays

DEAKIN AWARD Koby has shown himself to be a selfless and caring young man throughout his time at Kalinda Primary School. He has stood up for others and is inclusive of all others. He has also shown an enthusiasm for the achievements of others which reflects a selfless attitude and takes a genuine interest in other people. He has gone about projects for the benefit of the school and used his own time to do this. He has organised and initiated a wet day board games library which helps develop a sense of community on days when students need to be inside at lunch due to the weather. In his role as a House Captain, Koby has held working bees at his home with the other members of his House leadership team to create (floggers) for all members of the House. Recently, he took part in “Relay for Life” where he walked the equivalent of a marathon and had only two hours of sleep. When asked what motivated him to do this, he responded with, “It was a small amount of time when you consider what those who battle cancer have to go through.” Before this event, he also created a lantern for the team to use, which lit up the track during the night. Throughout his time here at Kalinda, Koby has set a great example in terms of work ethic and how others should be treated. Congratulations, Koby.

BENDIGO SHIELD QUIET ACHIEVER AWARD The Bendigo Shield focuses particularly on recognising someone who demonstrates resilience and perseverance within the classroom and shows outstanding sportsmanship. The Bendigo Shield recipient will continually challenge themselves and nominate for a variety of leadership roles and participate to their personal best whilst playing sport. This year we have joint recipients of this award. The first recipient of this year’s Bendigo Shield demonstrates all the qualities of a good leader. She has taken on the role of House Captain, showing responsibility, maturity and commitment. This person displays good sportsmanship, having a go at anything and everything, she leads by example and tries her hardest to improve and succeed. Within the classroom she works diligently, producing quality work and supporting her peers. This person has also done some incredible work for the community. She has recognised an issue and taken it upon herself to make a difference. This meant months of collecting second hand books and worksheets and sending them to a school overseas in Vanuatu, which had lost everything due to a cyclone. This displayed her determined and caring nature. She upholds all of the Kalinda Values on a daily basis and continues to make a difference. The first recipient of this year’s Bendigo Shield is Ashleigh. The second recipient of this year’s Bendigo Shield has demonstrated outstanding initiative and leadership throughout this year. She has nominated for various leadership positions and dealt with setbacks with integrity and resilience until finally obtaining the ICT role. She always tries her hardest on the sporting field and genuinely takes pride in seeing others succeed and having fun. During Leadership time she helped organise and implemented a whole school fundraiser event, Ice Cream Day. This event raised over $500 for the Starlight Foundation. She proactively worked on the organisation, predominantly during out of school time. This recipient upholds all the Kalinda Values and demonstrates a willingness to put others first, showing a genuine care for her fellow student. The second recipient of this year’s Bendigo Shield is Lauren.

SPORT AWARD

This year’s recipient of the School Sport Victoria Academic and Sporting Achievement medal participates in a range of sporting disciplines at grassroots and representative level, and is doing so with increasing success. In doing so, this student has consistently demonstrated a number of desirable participation qualities over an extended period: teamwork, encouragement and leadership of others, self-discipline and commitment to club, school and family. This student is a humble and respected role-model whose achievements deserve to be recognized. In recent years, this student’s most outstanding sporting achievements have revolved around successful participation in domestic competitions with new opportunities for representative involvement. Academically, this student is highly committed, achieving at a high level across a range of core subject areas. He combines a commitment to hard work with the ability to know what to sacrifice (and when), to present work in Literacy, Mathematics and Challenge Based Learning that is truly representative of his ‘Personal Best’. This student works hard to maintain continual academic improvement and balances high study expectations with increasing training and competition requirements. With an excellent capacity for leadership and public presentation, this student can represent and articulate the thoughts and feelings of the student group, and – in doing so - has demonstrated the power to positively affect the morale of the school community. It is my great pleasure to introduce you to Kalinda Primary School’s third winner of the School Sport Victoria Academic and Sporting Achievement medal - Thomas.

FAREWELL

This year we are farewelling two terrific teachers, Lexi Maurus and Fi Murray, both of whom are leaving to take up new opportunities in life. We certainly will miss both lovely ladies but we wish them well for their new adventures. Mr Paul Todd will be taking over from Lexi and Mrs Jo Henderson will be taking up the place left by Fi. I’m sure we will keep in touch with both Lexi and Fi in the future.

OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program Term 4 – Week 10

It has been a very fun last week of term filled with loads of activities! We cannot believe that it’s already the end of the year, time sure does fly when you’re having fun!!!! We have been creating loads of Christmas things such as Santa masks, letters to Santa and decorations to hang on the tree. Lots of other games have been enjoyed outside now that the weather is much nicer; we have had games of tennis, dodgeball, cricket and basketball. We have also gone down to the playground where everyone showed off their amazing monkey bar skills. Hide and Seek has been very popular this week, getting everyone involved and discovering some very tricky hiding spots! We had our talent show where we saw some amazing talents; singing, dancing, gymnastics, card tricks were all super impressive and it was fantastic to see everybody getting up and having a go. We had many delicious snacks such as smoothies, cheese and crackers, dips, icypoles to enjoy in the last week of the term! We are also having a party on Thursday night to celebrate the end of a fantastic year, where we have very yummy treats and a heap of awesome games that Emma and Campbell have put together for us all to enjoy! A letter from (and to!) the P & F Association What an amazing year it’s been! I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the incredible people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to provide so many great experiences for the school community. This year, we ran:

The Biggest Morning Tea – where we raised $200 for the Cancer Council

The Mothers’ Day stall

The School Disco (Crazy Hair theme - didn’t the kids look fantastic!?!)

The Father’s Day Stall

The Kalinda Carols’ Sausage Sizzle (we loved Santa!)

We also organised a dinner at Castello’s (who could pass up a $6.95 parma and chips?!?) and helped out around the school where we could. Funds raised by us this year went towards many important areas around the school. We have provided:

New music stands for the string group

School wristbands for children to wear during excursions

Pans for the canteen

$1000 towards the SAKG for new equipment

Icy poles for the grade 6’s after their dance lesson

All of the Grade 6 Graduation banners

Sticky beaks bags for all new Foundation 2016 students.

So, thank you again to an amazing team! We couldn’t do what we do without the amazing volunteers! We’d also like to give a big thanks to Steve Harvey for organising some much needed storage for us in the stadium!! I think our boxes full of goodies might have been driving him crazy!! Look out next year for more exciting projects and events! Our new Executive Committee members for next year are: Adrianne Hicks (President), Jo O’Callaghan (Vice President), Trina Settle (Secretary) and Kate Hender (Treasurer). Our first meeting next year will be held in the stadium at 9.30am on Monday 15

th February.. EVERYONE is

welcome to attend and we’d love to see some new faces around the table Have a wonderful Christmas and a well-deserved, safe and relaxing break!

Are you too busy to eat well? Our lives are so hectic already, then we add on kids sporting and other commitments and the timetable gets frantic. It’s at these times healthy eating can get forgotten as take away becomes the easier choice. Teaching children that healthy eating is an integral part of life, not one that happens only when you have time, is an important life lesson. The good news is the meals you prepare on the busy days don’t have to be master chef worthy-if you have no time then plan to put together a really quick meal like BBQ chicken and salad – if it has meat (or vegetable protein) and some vegetables/salad it’s perfect. The important part is the planning which has to happen before you race out the door or before you go to the supermarket. If you are able to plan out your meals for the week giving consideration to the amount of other things you have on this will help you to eat well AND be busy. Planning to eat well is most effective when it’s a habit not something you do when you have time . The great thing is that when you have your meals under control it makes you feel more in control. Remember, just keep it simple! Lisa Renn, Accredited Practising Dietitian www.dietproofyourkids.com.au
