    F

or centuries flowers have been used to

create beautiful displays and to scenthomes. Cut flowers bring a little bit of

your garden into your house and an extra,

cheering sense of life. If you love to have fresh

flowers adorning your rooms, why not create a

dedicated cutting garden to provide your ownflowers all year round? You dont need as

much room for this as you might think and can

even grow them in containers. Set aside a

patch of ground that receives plenty of sun-shine and cultivate it like a

    standard vegetable patch.

    This means digging over the

    soil, adding humus, ensuring

good drainage and scatteringa slow release fertiliser. It is

useful to plant the flowers in

    rows leaving enough space

between them to walk alongwhile harvesting.

    Fill your cutting garden with

    flowers you love and dont

forget to grow some foliagetoo. Your main planning is to

    decide which plants you wish

    to cultivate, when they flower

and how tall they grow. Buildyour knowledge by research-

    ing in which seasons your

    preferred species bloom and

plant accordingly so you can have fresh flow-ers for most of the year. For the winter

months, consider putting in some plants for

    drying to create everlasting arrangements.

Specimens such as Chinese lanterns, globethistles and statice are perfect for this.

Group each variety together to make them

easier to cut, keeping the tallest plants in anarea where they wont cast shadows on the

shorter ones. Mix perennials, bulbs, shrubs

and annuals for a constant and diverse selec-

tion. Annuals are perfect for a cutting garden

because regularly picking the flowers encour-ages new bloom production. Some species of

annuals to consider are rudbeckias, cornflow-

ers, marigolds, nigella, and spectacular short

    sunflowers.

Plant the annuals in succession so you have a

steady supply. Once their flowering season isover, pull up the plants and replace with an-other species, but dont forget to feed the soil

before replanting. Perennials such as Japa-

    nese anemones, gypsophila, chrysanthemums

and Michaelmas daisies are ideal for the cut-ting garden and dont need to be re-planted

each year. Bulbs are also wonderful as cut

flowers, with daffodils and their relations be-

ing the most popular. Other stunning bulbs toconsider are alliums, irises,

    lilies and gladioli.

To get you started right away,

here are some flowers youcan put in now, as long as the

    weather isnt too cold. Plant

    summer-flowering bulbs such

as lily and gladioli and peren-nials such as lavender. Sweet-

peas can be sown outside in a

    sheltered area now too. Other

    hardy annuals you can sow

    now are larkspur, nigella, andmarigolds.

    If you have space, include

some shrubs and trees forfoliage and branches to add to

    your fresh flower arrange-

    ments. The perfect foliage

shrub is pittosporum which comes in a varietyof sizes and colours from deep burgundy

    leaves to pale variegated ones.

As well as being able to step outside and picka lovely bunch of fresh flowers whenever you

want, you could also grow enough to provide

bouquets for your friends and family. Every-

    one loves to receive flowers.

    SNOWDON & the Mountain Railway

    At 1085 metres,

    Snowdon is as

    we all knowthe

    highest mountainin Wales. Or any-

    where else in

    Britain except

Scotland, for that matter. But if Ben Nevis has

the edge in terms of height, Snowdon is unique

in another way: it's the only mountain in Brit-

ain you can walk down without having first

walked up. You can walk up, of course, and

more than half of the 350,000 people whomake it to the top every year do. But it takes

over three hours even for the moderately fit,and it's definitely a boots-and-kagoule walk,

because no matter how warm it is at Llanberis,

it'll be freezing at the top. Besides, after all theeffort and investment that went into building

the Rheilffordd Yr Wyddfa or Snowdon Moun-

tain Railway, it seems churlish not to take ad-

    vantage of it.

    The railway opened on Easter

Monday 1896, and such was the

skill of its designers and build-ers that little change has been needed since.

The same Swiss-designed double rack and

pinion track still locks the locomotives in its

firm embrace as they shoulder their single 56-

seat carriages at a steady 7kph up the improb-

    able gradients.

If the technology is pretty much unchanged,

the geology is even more so. Immediately after

leaving the station on its hour-long ascent, yourtrain heaves itself over the viaducts through a

screen of scrubby oaks. Then the trees are

gone, and all around you are the gaunt, naked

flanks of primeval mountains, their rocky bones breaking through the thin soil in erup-

tions of jagged crags, tumbled boulders, and

slicks of scree. At last your train puffs into the

Summit Station, whose views are said to ex-

tend as far as Ireland. Don't feel cheated,

though, if you can hardly see your hand in

front of your face: you are, after all, over

3,500ft up and the cloudbase is often some

way below you. You can always take

comfort, though, from the fact that before

you is the brand-new 8 million Hafod Eryricaf and visitors' centre, Britain's highest li-

censed premises and, therefore, another ofSnowdon's unique features.

Actually, there has been a caf here ever since

the railway opened. The first, a shack thatserved very welcome hot drinks was soon re-

placed by a hotel and bar that lasted until the

1930s, when it was in turn replaced by a mod-

est concrete effort best described as a shoeboxwith views. But this glorified bothie eventually

proved unequal to the growing numbers of

visitors and had to make way for the eco-friendly Hafod Eryri.

And it has to be said that it's not a bad building.Long and low and of dull grey slate, it wraps

itself almost unobtrusively around a crag like a

miniature Tibetan monastery. Inside, of course,

it's a caf-cum-visitors' centre much like anyother, robustly built to withstand the impact of

350,000 pairs of mountain boots every season

and not what you'd call cosy. But then it was

never intended as a place to linger: if you'retaking the train back down you only have half

an hour here, and if you miss it you have a

minimum two hours' hike ahead of you.

    * Snowdon Mountain Railway adult return

Perfectly Plucked - Eyebrows are a natural frame for makeup andshould be plucked immediately after a bath or shower, as the pores will be open, making hair removal less painful. If you are in a hurry, soak a cotton wool ballin warm water and hold it against each brow for a minute or two beforeplucking.

Do not moisturise, as this makes it difficult for the tweezers to grip the hairs. Use a magnifying mirror ingood light.First brush upwards with an eyebrow brush and snip any stray hairs above the thickest part of the brow.Next brush downwards and trim hairs below the thickest part of the brow.Finish by brushing upwards.

Three-quarters of your eyebrow should slant upwards and the remaining quarter slant downwards. Take aslim pencil and hold it next to your nostril in a vertical line to find where your brow should begin.Keeping the pencil against your nose, move the other end to the outer corner of your eye to find where yourbrow should end. To find where the highest point of your brow should be, move the free end until it crossesyour iris. Never remove hairs from the top of your brows as this distorts the natural curve.Hold skin taut and pluck one hair at a time, pulling gently at a 45 degree angle in the direction of hair growth.Stop frequently to make sure your brows are even. Are Your Thoughts

    Making You Sick?

What we think and believe about ourselves, the worldaround us and our place in it can not only be a key factorin our health and healing outcomes but may also be anunderlying factor in the cause of illness and injury.

A completely new medical field known as "Mind-bodymedicine" has emerged on the back of mind body re-search. Focusing on the interactions among the brain, mind, body, and behaviour, and the ways in which emo-tional, mental, social, spiritual, and behavioural factors can

directly affect health. An interesting feature of illnesses or disease is that thespecific emotional issues that affect our lives and the waywe perceive them can often determine the location ofdisease or illness within our bodies. Even the very worddis-ease reveals an underlying truth that dis-ease in thebody and mind (not being at ease) can lead to physicaldisease in the body (being ill)

Western medicine generally ends up treating the symp-toms of disease and illness rather than the underlyingproblem, which often means that the problem will either re-occur or simply manifest in some other form.

It's up to each of us to become more aware not only of our

bodies requirements; but also of our own emotional andmental health needs. By being more alert for potentialemotional and spiritual issues, we can deal with them orseek appropriate help before they turn into somethingmore serious or life threatening.

A great way of starting to raise your self-awareness andstart getting back in touch with yourself is to set aside asmall amount of time each week. You will only need about15/30 minutes but it is important that you will not be dis-turbed or distracted. Just sit quietly and just STOP, allowyour mind to wander. Gently examine your innermostfeelings, emotions, fears and events over the past week.

What you discover may be a revelation to you; and thatnew understanding could make a huge difference to yourhealth and emotional well-being.

The oldest building in Penrhyn Bay is Penrhyn Old Hall datingfrom the early 15th century. It was the home of the Pugh fam-

ily whose fortunes faded through their adherence to the Catholicreligion when their neighbours reluctantly accepted Protestant-

ism. On 14 April 1587, printing material forCatholicliterature was found

in a cave on the Little Orme, where it had been used by therecusantRobertPugh (squireof Penrhyn Hall) and his chaplainWilliam Davies to print

Y Drych Gristianogawl('The Christian Mirror'). They had taken refugethere during the persecution of Catholics instigated byQueen Elizabeth 1 in

May 1586. In the grounds of the hall are the ruins of themedieval chapel

of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Penrhyn, last used by theChurch in Walesfor public worship c1930. The Pugh family also held a charter and built a

windmill to serve their land in the near by village ofGlanwyddenthe firstcharter dating 1580. The hall now serves as avery popular pubandres-

taurantand is well worth a visit.

M other's Day is commemoratedworldwide although the dates differ from country tocountry. In the UK, the correct name for Mother'sDay is Mothering Sunday and it always falls on the

4th Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter.Because the dates of Easter and Lent vary fromyear to year, the date of Mothering Sunday alsovaries. This year it falls on 14th March.

Although mothers have been revered since Prehis-toric times, this particular tribute day to mothers hasbeen recognised since the 17th century. In thosedays, it was common for children to move awayfrom home at an early age to work in service or onapprenticeships from as young as ten years old.

They lived in their employers' houses and rarelyhad time off to see their families.

They would worship regularly in their nearestchurch, known as their Daughter' church. However,it was considered extremely important for everyoneto return at least once a year to worship at theirMother' church, the one in which they were bap-tised. Servants were given the day off to returnhome and spend some time with their family and toworship at their Mother church. This day became

    known as Mothering Sunday.

As this would probably be their only holiday of theyear they would take gifts for their family. Theremight have been a Simnel cake (a marzipan cov-ered fruit cake) from a generous employer to saveuntil the end of Lent and posies of wild flowersgathered from the hedgerows. The luxurious fruit-filled Simnel cake signified an end to the austerityof Lent.

During the 19th century, Mothering Sunday celebra-tions started to wane but after World War 2 thetradition was picked up again, with influence from

America, and has continued to be recognised in thefairly original way ever since.

Customary Mother's Day gifts include chocolates, flowers and pampering days, but if you ask anymum, she will probably say that the only presentshe wants on Mother's Day is the presence of herchildren.

On Mother's Day I have written a poem for you. Inthe interest of poetic economy and truth, I havesucceeded in concentrating my deepest feelingsand beliefs into two perfectly crafted lines: You'remy mother, I would have no other! ~Forest Houten-schil

Insanity is hereditary; you get it from your chil-

    dren. ~Sam Levenson

A suburban mother's role is to deliver children

obstetrically once, and by car forever after. ~PeterDe Vries

When you are a mother, you are never really alonein your thoughts. A mother always has to thinktwice, once for herself and once for herchild. ~Sophia Loren, Women and Beauty

    Motoring Review McLaren MP4-12C

    By James Baggott

Meet the McLaren MP4-12Cthe first model in a

range of road cars from the manufacturer that plan torewrite the supercar rulebook. With a host of clevernew technology, taken straight from Lewis Hamil-

tons World Championship winning F1 car, thebreathtaking sportscar doesnt just break the mould,it takes a sledge hammer to the production line.

Designed from the ground-up with McLarens leg-endary attention to detail, the new supercar ispacked with innovation. Powering the car will be a

    twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 unit. Pumping out amind-blowing 600bhp and 600Nm of torque, per-

formance figures are likely to be record-breaking.

Theres no official word just yet, but expect sub-fourseconds for the dash to 60mph and a top speed inexcess of 200mph.

The dry sump unit has dual variable valve timing

and a flat plane crankshaft that allows the engine tobe mounted very low in the chassis, lowering the

centre of gravity and improving handling. Drivingthe rear wheels, the engine revs to an ear-piercing8,500-rpm and McLaren has worked hard to get the

soundtrack symphony-right, using a special exhaustmanifold and intake systems to give an engine notethatll set the hairs on the back of your neck on end.

McLarens philosophy from the outset was to build asupercar that wouldnt just be an also-ran, but the

best. And with Ron Dennis at the helm, its unlikelyit will be released with performance that wont justbeat the competition, but trounce it.

Although at the time of writing we didnt know theprice, the MP4-12C will be launched to compete inwhat McLaren believes to be the core sportscar

marketthe 125,000 to 175,000 segment. Keyrivals will include the Ferrari 458 Italia and Lambor-

    ghini LP560-4.

That 3.8-litre V8 unit is mated to a seven-speedSeamless Shift dual clutch gearboxor SSG. Again,

taking technology honed on the marques F1 cars, shifts are made by steering wheel-mounted rocker

levers. Like the F1 cars, shifts can be made by pull-ing or pushing the rocker.

But where things really get clever is with Pre Cog

technology. This primes the gearbox for a changethe second the driver applies pressure to the rocker, thus saving crucial time. The second bit of pressure

actuates the shift, which takes just milliseconds to

complete. Think of it as priming the shutter on a

digital camera and you get the idea.

Usability has obviously been high on the agenda, with McLaren saying ride quality will be on a par

with executive saloon cars. But thats not to say itwont be sporty too.

Looks wise, the new car has been designed so everypart, every scoop and every slant has a purpose.

McLaren are keen to stress the 12C is not a modern-day reproduction of the F1, but does build on itsfunctionally-driven engineering and design.

Bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime runninglights, inspired by the McLaren logo, dominate the

front end, the windscreen is deep and low for excel-lent driver visibility, and the twin rear exhausts are

striking. But the real talking point are the doorsjust like the F1 the 12C features dihedral doors, that

    open forwardsand upwards on a

    single hinge. TheMP4-12C isgroundbreaking

in every sense ofthe word, and isset to change theface of the super-

    car glitterati.
