PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear parents and guardians,

Year 6 Graduation

This morning our Year 6 students received their invitations to the Graduation celebrations in a very unusual way. When they arrived at school, their invitations were hanging in their collaborative space – just like ‘magic’. The boys and girls were very excited and loved the novelty of this method of ‘special delivery’. This is just the start of a very exciting last four weeks for our Year 6 students. The photos below give you a small glimpse of what the morning was like. Special thanks must go to the parents of the Year 6 Graduation Committee for coming up with this imaginative idea and for their work in putting it all together. I can only look forward to the next instalments.

Oxfam Concert 2017

On Tuesday night, I accompanied our Chamber Choir and the Guitar Ensemble to the annual Oxfam Concert at Box Hill Town Hall. This concert raises funds for Oxfam but more importantly gives young people from schools in our region the opportunity to perform and display their talent. Once again, our students and a few talented past students performed in a variety of ensembles, bands and choir. They were all great ambassadors for our school. Many thanks to Tanya Dolence and Peter King for preparing the students so expertly. Also a big thank you must go to the parents who supported their children by attending on the night.

Bahasa Indonesia

The study of Indonesian is progressing so well this year. Bu Sarah is working with each class and they are producing outstanding results. This week, Malavika and Sophie really impressed me with their written Indonesian work. They wrote a whole passage, which they could read and translate, about themselves and their families. Bu Sarah was so pleased with their effort that she sent them to my office to show me their work. Great work girls! Hebat!!

Learning your numbers

Learning your number facts is so important from a very young age. This week Ms Fisher was so delighted with Vihangi’s work that she had to come and show me. Great work Vihangi!!! Keep up the good work.

PFA Disco

Last Friday many children came back to school to enjoy the music and dancing at the School Disco run by the PFA. This event is one that the children look forward to for many weeks. It was a very successful evening. My thanks to the PFA (again) for the way they contribute to the Essex Heights community, and in particular the children. Thanks to the organisers, the helpers on the night and to the staff who also attended to assist with supervision.

The transition from Essex Heights to secondary school

As we move into December, all of our students are getting ready to move up to a new year level. This article is aimed at helping parents to prepare children for their transition, in particular Year 6 parents.

The following advice is provided by Sharon Witt, an experienced secondary teacher, author of 12 books for young people, and very successful presenter on building resilience.

Entering high school can be just as daunting for parents as it is for a child. It is a huge time of change, and coupled with the fact that starting secondary school often coincides with the onset of puberty; it can be quite a roller-coaster ride!

Spend as much time as you can reassuring your child that they do not have to face this change alone and that it will be, for the most part, a positive experience. Avoid sharing any horror stories you may have experienced as a teenager in high school – these will not help your child. Rather, recall any positive experiences you had, especially if you made life-long friends at high school.

Organisation is crucial to helping your child cope well with entering high school. Those students that are well organised have a much better chance of settling in those first few weeks of secondary school.

Here are 6 tips for preparing your child for high school:

Ensure your child has everything they need for high school well before school starts for the year

Having items missing at the beginning of the year will frustrate not only your child but the teachers. Ensure they have enough books to write in for each subject and always have spares on hand at home.

Practise using public transport if your child is using it for the first time

For many students, changing schools means they may now have to travel on buses or trains for the first time. Help them to familiarise themselves with the bus/train timetable and offer a contingency if they miss their transport. If possible, practise the trip during the holidays.

Set up a designated study space in the home

This tip is so important as so many children don’t have a specific area set up to allow them to quietly complete their homework. The bedroom is not recommended, as this is purely a space for sleeping and relaxing. Use any area that is reasonably quiet and well lit. Set up a desk with a computer, if possible, along with stationery items.

Set up a high school parent folder

This will be a place to file all correspondence so that you can know exactly what is happening for your child at high school, including important dates. If you know what is going on at school, you will be able to help your child feel in control and stay organised. I cannot recommend this highly enough. As a parent you really need to stay on top of school information, at least until your child has established their own routine and systems for staying organised at school.

George Perini Principal

Encourage healthy sleeping patterns at least one week before starting high school

If your child has got into a holiday habit of staying up late and waking up at lunch time, they will get a rude shock come first day of school when their sleeping patterns are all out of whack! Get your child into ‘school routine’ for sleeping during the final week of the holidays.

Keep your child’s high school in the loop

Inform your child’s new school if they have special needs or learning difficulties. Teachers will benefit from being made aware of any particular needs or special circumstances that will help them in working with your child. If there are any specific family issues that might affect your child’s ability to settle into high school, communicate these to your child’s class or home-room teacher as soon as you know who they are. Never underestimate the importance of keeping the lines of communication open with your child’s school.

Parent Helpers & Volunteers Thank You Morning Tea

Wednesday 6th December from 10.45am to 11.30am

We are so fortunate to have such a large number of volunteers at

Essex Heights Primary School. We greatly appreciate and would like to

acknowledge the ongoing support that is given.

The Parent Helpers & Volunteers Morning Tea will be held

on Wednesday 6th December at 10.45am in the Hall,

and we would love to see a large group of volunteers attending.

This gives the teachers an opportunity to show their appreciation for all the

effort, time and commitment put in by our volunteer parents and

community members.

A delicious morning tea is planned, so please keep the morning free.

The Year 2 students visited The Royal Botanic Gardens last Tuesday, 14th November. The weather was beautiful and hot, bringing out the vibrant colours of the flowers, plants and the well-kept gardens. In the Herb Garden they got to smell mint, chocolate, thyme, lavender, and so much more. They walked through the cool Fern Gully, the Bamboo Forest, and saw black swans on the lake. They learnt about the Lightning Tree, the smallest coconut and how to plant a seedling carefully by not hurting the roots.

THANK YOU to our wonderful parent helpers for attending, keeping the drink bottles filled, and joining in the wonder of learning about the gardens.

Now in its thirteenth year, Screen It is Australia’s biggest annual student film competition. Run by the expert Education Team at ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image), Screen It is designed to promote rich learning outcomes for screen literacy across Australian primary and secondary school students.

The theme this year was ‘Time’. ACMI received a record of 829 entries from more than 3000 students from across Australia.

This year, Brandon (4G) entered a computer game and 4CT entered the Junior Animation (Foundation to Year 4) category. 4CT won with their film, Spending Time Wisely. The students attended the Screen It Awards Gala on 17th November at ACMI. They were presented with a trophy and some fabulous prizes including a webcam, portable film light, tripods, backpacks, and DVDs.

2017 Junior Animation (Foundation to Year 4) Winner Spending Time Wisely - Essex Heights Primary School, Mount Waverley

ACMI: SCREEN IT

The theme next year is ‘Curious’. ACMI provides student resources for the theme.

The Categories below may be entered individually, small group or as a class:

Junior Animation (Foundation to Year 4) Junior Live Action (Foundation to Year 4) Junior Video Game (Foundation to Year 4)

Middle Animation (Year 5 to Year 8) Middle Live Action (Year 5 to Year 8) Middle Video Game (Year 5 to Year 8)

Senior Animation (Year 9 to Year 12) Senior Live Action (Year 9 to Year 12) Senior Video Game (Year 9 to Year 12)

Year 4CT made a short film animation called ‘Spending Time Wisely’. The talented group of students in 4CT along with the inspiration and guidance of Mrs Jennifer Austin and some very kind and generous parents who gave their time to assist with the making of props and puppets, helped us to win the title of Best Animation in the Foundation to Year 4 age group in the ACMI awards. Every student in 4CT contributed to the film: voice overs, making props, making dolls, making background sounds, sewing, and particular thanks to the technical talents of Oliver H, Finley H, Ryan S and Nick T who edited the entire film. There were over 880 entrants

in the competition nationwide. The entire event was streamed live at Federation Square and the awards will be screened in full sometime in 2018. Many thanks to Stephanie Trace, Mel Brockway, Eugenia Shubin, Daniel Hasnat, Emma Milevski and Ronek Shaverdi for their wonderful assistance. We are all very proud of you 4CT!!!

We had the chance to meet some actors from TV. Here are Rad and Bajo (presenters of the ACMI awards) from Good Game Spawn Point, and Harrison who is also a successful actor. We were lucky to get their autographs.

Some very ‘glamorous’ personalities on the red carpet …

Walking the red carpet to the ACMI Screen It awards presentation at Federation Square, Melbourne. We did feel a little bit like famous celebrities!!

Here are some VIPs (Very Important People). Ruby and Reveka wrote the script, (together with Ben and Haaris). Kyla, Nick and Nicola were the voice overs in the film and Ella, Emma T and Reveka accepted the award of Best Animation in the Foundation to Year 4 level.

MUSIC

Happy singing & performing, Tanya Dolence

Busking Competition

The Music Captains and other enthusiastic Year 6s have been busy organising (and rehearsing for) the 2017 Busking Competition. They have held a number of meetings to organise and discuss the details of the competition. The Music Captains called all the competitors to the Music Room and assigned groups with their specific performance day/s and answered any questions the competitors had.

The performers have been organising rehearsals during their recess and lunchtimes as well as holding rehearsals at each other's houses. They have received little or no guidance/support from teachers, instead working independently to arrange their music and keep their groups rehearsing successfully. It has been so inspiring to see the drive, dedication and musicality displayed by so many of our students. We very much look forward to seeing the performances during lunchtimes next week.

HEALTH CENTRE

Hayfever/Asthma

I have been seeing a few children with hayfever and asthma due to the time of year and the increased pollen around.

If your child suffers from hayfever, please monitor and administer an antihistamine if required at home in the morning.

Again, I will remind you of the importance of always having your asthma reliever medications (Ventolin/Asmol) with you, and checking they are in date, and always use them with a spacer. If your child is having increased episodes of asthma, you may need to see your Doctor.

Please ensure we always have an up to date Asthma and/or Allergy Plan at school so we can look after your child appropriately at school.

Any questions or concerns, please call me on 9807 4944 between 11am and 3pm Monday to Friday.
