SIMPLIFIED EXPLANATION FOR GENERAL UNDERSTANDINGThe body has various levels of immunity wherein it has ready antibodies

(like police-force ) to curb and neutralize a foreign body as a virus or

bacteria whose entry causes an infection. This mechanism of defence is rather natural (both inborn and naturally acquired through mother, etc ).

An antibody (Ab), also known as an immunoglobulin (Ig), is a large Y-shape

protein produced by plasma cells also recognizes a unique part of the foreign

enemy, called an antigen (that is on the outerpart of the virus or bacteria).

The body can also produce more antibodies usually in 5-7 days upon a need (when the infection

due to bacteria or virus, crosses a certain level).


The immune system also has a memory to remember the antigen that is called immunological memory. If the same antigen (enemy) is found again the immune system generates antibodies (police force) faster in just 2-3 days, instead of the usual 5-7days.

Modern vaccines primarily use this mechanism. They try to create an immunological memory by artificially introducing

antigens (enemies) in a controlled state through vaccines (as pulse polio drops).

This with an objective to have a faster action by the immune system in 2-3 days if there is an actual attack by the polio virus in the future. Thus increasing the safety against the particular disease.
