“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns

and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3: 16

Today we celebrate the Sacrament of our Lord Jesus Christ’s true body and true blood. Reception of the Lord’s Supper expresses not only fellowship with the Lord, but also fellowship and agreement with the teaching of the pastor and congregation.

We want to express our sincere welcome to our guests and assure them that for their spiritual welfare we follow the biblical practice of closed communion. All guests are kindly asked to please speak with Pastor Gaunt before communing at our altar. Normally, members of Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod congregations are welcome to partake, as are people from churches in fellowship with the LCMS. Those who do not receive the Sacrament this day may use the time for prayer. Those not communing, who so desire, may come to the altar to receive a blessing. So that the pastor knows you desire a blessing please cross your arms over your chest. Please pray with us that we might all be truly united in the teaching of our Lord's precious word. (For further study: 1 Cor. 11:17-34; Matt. 5:23ff; 10:32ff; 18:15-35; 6:26-29.)

ROGATE—THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER EASTER

“Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you.” (Jn 16:23–33) To pray in Jesus’ name is to pray as one baptized. For it is in the water that He put His name upon you, claiming you as His own, making you sons of God in Him with access to the Father. By His incarnation and crucifixion our Lord Jesus broke through the barrier of sin which separated us from God, opening a portal to the Father. To pray in Jesus’ name is to pray with faith in Him as the one Mediator between God and men, who gave Himself a ransom for all. (I Timothy 2:1–6) Like Moses in the wilderness, Jesus is our go-between and intercessor before the throne of heaven. He was lifted up for us on the cross that we might be saved and restored to fellowship with the Father. (Num 21:4–9) Looking into this perfect teaching of liberty (James 1:22–27) we pray with boldness and confidence as dear children of God.

If your devotion so dictates, it is appropriate to make the sign of the cross at those places marked with a cross (T) and to bow the head at those places marked with a diamond () in reverence to God.

Hymn #702 “My Faith Looks Up to Thee”

Confession and Absolution

P: In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.C: Amen.P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left

undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.C: Amen.

Salutation and Collect of the DayP: The Lord be with you.C: And also with you.Silence for personal prayerP: Let us pray. O God our Father, from whom all good things do come, grant to us, Your humble servants, that by Your holy inspiration we may think those things that be right and by Your merciful guiding may perform them; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Savior, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.C: Amen. (spoken)

Old Testament Reading Numbers 21:4-94 From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. 5 And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.” 6  Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. 7  And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. 8 And the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.P: This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle James 1:22-2722 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. 26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this

person's religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.P: This is the Word of the LordC: Thanks be to God.

VerseP: Alle- | luia.*

Alle- | luia. Christ who has redeemed us | with His blood,*

is risen and has appeared unto us. Alle- | luia. I came forth from the Father and have come in- | to the world.*

Again, I leave the world and go to the Father. Alle- | luia. C: Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia.

Holy Gospel John 16:23-30P: T The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 16th chapter.C: Glory to You, O Lord.23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. 25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27  for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28  I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.” 29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.”P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.C: Praise to You, O Christ.
