London – the Capital of the UK

London is the capital of Great Britain. It’s a very old city. It is two thousand years old. London is not only the capital of the country, it is also a huge port. The population of London is about 9 million people. London has got three parts: the City of London, the West End, The East End.

The City of London is the financial center of the U K. The West End is the center of London. The East End of London is the district for the working people.

In London you can see many sights: Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, museums, libraries and galleries.

The City is the money of London.The West End is the goods of London.The East End is the hands of London.

1. They say it is the most beautiful place in London. In the middle of it a monument to Admiral Nelson is situated. The monument includes four bronze lions. There are two fountains in it.

2. It is a wonderful building. The Queen Victoria Memorial is in front of it. It takes you ten minutes to get from this building to Trafalgar Square, the centre of London. The Queen of Great Britain lives there.

3. It was a fortress, a palace, a prison and the King’s Zoo. Now it is a museum. You can see a lot of interesting things in the halls of this building. William the Conqueror built it in the eleventh century. Twelve black ravens live in it. People believe that London will be rich while the ravens live there.

4. It is one of the greatest English churches. It is not far from the Tower of London. The famous English architect Sir Christopher Wren built it in the 17th century after the Great Fire. It is a fine building with many columns and towers. In one of the towers there is one of the largest bells in the world.

5. It is more than nine hundred years old. There are many monuments and statues there, many English kings and queens are buried there. It is famous for the Poet’s Corner. It is one of the most famous and beautiful churches in London. This church has two tall towers.

6. They are long grey buildings with towers. The large clock in one of the towers is “Big Ben”. You can hear the sound of “Big Ben” every hour in London. The clock and the bell got their names after Sir Benjamin Hall. The members of the British Parliament work in these buildings.

Trafalgar Square• It is the central square

of London and traditional place for people to meet.

• All sorts of protest meetings are held there.

• The statue of national hero Admiral Nelson stands there.

The Houses of Parliament• It is a place where

the British Government sits.

• It consists of three parts: the Royal Apartments, the House of Lords and the House of Commons.

Big Ben

• It’s a clock in the tower and it is a big bell.

• You can hear it every hour.

• People are allowed to get inside the Tower so that they can see the work of the clock.

• There is no lift and there are three hundred and forty steps (340).

• It weighs 13.5 tons.

Tower Bridge• It is the oldest and

famous bridge across the Thames.

• Originally it was made of wood by the Romans, but it was often burnt down.

• Later it was made of stone.

• Finally it was rebuilt and made of concrete.

• It has a long history. In the past it was a fortress, a prison, a castle and a zoo.

• There is a legend that without them the Tower will fall.

• Nowadays this building is a very popular museum.

of the Queen. • Buckingham Palace

was built for John, first Duke of Buckingham, between 1702 and 1705.

• Новый год в мире всегда сравнивают с Английским т.к. именно в Англии всегда зарождались новые традиции, которые в последствии использовались многими европейскими странами.

• Центром новогодних торжеств является Трафальгарская площадь, где празднуется новый год и устанавливается ёлка.

• Через Трафальгарскую площадь каждый год проходит Лондонский новогодний парад.

• В Англии существует обычай складывать подарки в «Рождественский носок». Согласно сказке «Рождественский дед» путешествовал по воздуху и проникал в дома через дымовую трубу. Побывав в одном доме, он обронил золотые монеты в носок, который сушился над очагом. С тех пор дети стали вывешивать носки и чулки, ожидая, что Санта Клаус обязательно положит подарок. К подарку обязательно будет приложена открытка, т. к. именно в Англии появилась традиция посылать по почте или вручать друг другу праздничные поздравления.
