● Dictator of Russia. He made a pact with Hitler, but Hitler broke it when he invaded Russia.

Churchill● Prime Minister of Great Britain (like the
president)

● The US did not have enough soldiers to fight

The Home Front
The Depression Ends● Even before the US
entered the war, we began manufacturing tanks, ships, airplanes, and weapons.
● This created millions of new jobs resulting in the end of the depression
Women on the Homefront
● 350,000 women served in the military during WWII.
● Millions of me left to go fight leaving factories without workers. Women worked these jobs.

Tuskegee Airmen
● African Americans were not allowed to by pilots in the US Airforce.
● They joined together in Tuskegee, AL and trained to fly.
● In 1943 they were allowed to join the fighting in the war.
Japanese Internment Camps
● Japanese Americans were suspected of being loyal to Japan
● 110,000 Japanese Americans were forced to leave their homes and jobs to live in internment camps that were fenced in.

Technology in World War II
● Albert Einstein discovered how to split an atom which led to the atomic bomb.
● The Manhattan Project: secret project to build the first atomic bomb
● Code Breakers: Each side had secret codes. The first computer was built during this time to break German codes.
● Radar: uses radio beams to locate objects in the air.
Navajo “Code Talkers”
● US soldiers who were Navajo Native Americans used their language to create an unbreakable code.
● Aside from the Navajo people only 30 people in the world knew the language.
● The language does not have a written alphabet which made it difficult to break.

Students will need to turn to pages 358-359. Put the Teacher edition under document camera. Point out the areas of the world where fighting took place.
Major Turning Points of the War
Europe● Battle of Stalingrad: major turning point because the
Soviet army forced the Germans to retreat.● D-Day June 6, 1944: Largest invasion by sea in history.
175,000 allied soldiers invaded the beaches of Normandy capturing it. This allowed the allies to push on into Germany.

Europe Turning Points Continued
● Battle of the Bulge: General Patton lead the allies to victory. Germany was taken over by the allies
● May 8, 1945 V-E Day: Germany surrenders, Victory in Europe
Turning Points in the Pacific
● Battle of Midway: US beat the Japanese weakening the Japanese navy.
● Island Hopping: strategy used by US to take Japanese islands in order to use them as fueling stations for American planes

Victory Japan
● April 12, 1945 FDR died and VP Harry Truman takes over.
● To save American soldiers lives, Truman decided to drop the first atomic bomb on Japan
● August 6 the first bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. 80,000 people died within seconds of the bomb being dropped.
● August 9 the second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. 60,000 people died
