Grow with usMarkets and growthManchester Airport has enjoyed a successful decade ofcargo growth and is currently the UK's fourth largestairport by flown cargo volume. The emergence of theFar East over recent years as the world's massmanufacturing region exporting to the UK is a keycomponent in the cargo growth statistics. But thecontinued importance of North America and theemergence of the Middle East with its ambitious airlinesand hub airports are also key to this cargo growth.
Around 55% of Manchester's cargo is belly-hold cargocarried on daily scheduled services from key centres ofeconomic activity. Scheduled freighters carry around45% of the remainder to and from the world's majormanufacturing locations.
At Manchester approximately 60% of the freight andmail handled each year is imported. The largest share ofthis volume comes from Asian locations. North Americanand increasingly Far East locations, provide the majordestinations for export freight.
Regional economyThe economy of the North West of England has apopulation of nearly 7 million people and 230,000companies. And with a GDP of £106 billion, it is largerthan some European countries. (Source: North WestRegional Development Agency).
