TRANSCRIPT

Jenny Worsdale, Deputy

Principal said; “It was great to have the

opportunity to share a

story with the children in

our nursery. I hope they

will get the same pleasure from books and

from reading that I have

over the years.”

We worked hard sourcing images from that era

based on transport, fashion, music, film, politics,

technology and sport and created collages for

display. It really is amazing how so many things

have changed and look dated though fashion &

make up has gone full circle.

The theme this year was “50 years ago” to

coincide with the college’s 50th year. That took us

back to the 1960s and gave us lots of scope!

“BE STILL!”

The nursery children all made golden crowns in reference to the story that was read to

them, “Where the Wild Things Are,” by Deputy

Principal, Jenny Worsdale. Angela Wade dressed up

for the occasion in a wolf suit and appeared just like

main character in the story, Max. After they had

roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible

teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their

terrible claws, the wild things (the nursery children)

each received a copy of the Maurice Sendak classic,

first published in 1964.

A big THANK YOU to the Fashion

Department for constructing

Max’s costume at short

notice...you really are an

integral part of World Book Day

at Tameside College!

Staff and students across both campuses really

got involved and joined in the fun. Quizzes,

competitions, picture opportunities and sixties

sweets had our ordinary library door turn into a

colourful revolving rainbow. Library staff dressed

in their sixties best & you could be sure

to find a glowing smile on the face of our

curious students and whilst the weather

may have been dim on the outside, the

library was beaming brightly on the

inside.

The libraries were decorated with

fantastic sixties collages which

consisted of iconic images from

an era of political uncertainty,

musical revolution,

futuristic technology, and some seriously funky

fashion. These collages were then used to compile a quiz for

our students. The quiz asked sixties related questions and the

answers could be found hiding amongst the many images.

Students had the chance to experience the thrill

of being inside a Volkswagen Camper van (albeit

a paper one). This van was a popular mode of

transport in the sixties, especially amongst the

Hippie subculture. These colourful vans could be

seen at peaceful protests covered in flowers and

scribed with anti-war messages. Thus, we gave

students and staff the opportunity to graffiti

decorate our very own vans with some colourful

artwork and slogans. As a result,

picture opportunities were made

available and students could flash

peace signs through the windows of our

hippie van,

Pictures from the day made local newspapers, Manchester Evening News & Tameside Advertiser featured us in their World Book Day 2 page spread with photos of the occasion and plenty of editorial.

As always, in celebration of books on WBD students across the college were given £1 tokens to use at good book sellers everywhere.

The “Back to the Sixties Staff Photos” kept students

amused as they were asked to match the baby & hip

looking teen photos of library staff in the 1960s to

the 2014 version.

The importance of reading:

Sweets and treats were available on the day as well

and we certainly didn’t have any of the reduced

sugar sweets of today. We went back in time to the

“Penny tray” and brought forth the memories of

gooey “Fruit Salads” stuck between the teeth and

black tongues from the popular “Black Jacks”.

Flying Saucers, Sherbet Fountains, Pink

Prawns, foam bananas, Popcorn and Parma

Violets had students flocking in their numbers

at the opportunity of securing a handful of sweets

for the afternoon. A sense of nostalgia was in the

air as classic games from the sixties era were

displayed and free to take part in. Pin the tail

on the donkey proved popular, as did Twister!

Students couldn’t resist the chance to get tangled

up with their friends & it was refreshing to see

iPhones and iPods disappear for the day!

World Book Day really did prove to be a

fun and educational occasion for

everyone involved. Students were

totally absorbed and were happy to

forget about today's mod-cons and respect the values

of the sixties era. As the music of the day played in the

background, a real sense of achievement was felt by

staff as smiles beamed across the room and laughter

echoed through book stands. It wasn't easy to hide the

fact that library staff enjoyed the day as much as the

students, a chance to provide a real experience and

dress up for the occasion simply overjoyed us. We'd like

to thank everyone who got involved and we aim to be

even better next year! Until then, come and visit us,

you've seen us all in costume now so you know we're a

truly friendly bunch.
