RAF COLLEGE CRANWELLCollege History - Book 2
Cranwellians At WarVersion 4.0 dated 2 August 2021 created by IBM Steward 6GE
This booklet is the second of four summarising 100 years of College History. Bounded by ORB F540 entries of 3 September 1939 and 8 May 1945, this booklet chronicles some of the events involving the College and its alumni during the war years.
The other three booklets cover Cranwellian milestones either side of the war, viz:
• Book 1 - The Pre-War Formative Years, covering the trials and tribulations of setting up and sustaining an independent military air academy for the RAF and establishing it as the RAF’s spiritual home.
• Book 3 - The New Normal, covering the recovery from war, the impact of the Jet Age, the Cold War and the transition from a school-sourced flight cadet system to a Graduate Entry Scheme training the mature student with the same laudable aims and objectives in mind.
• Book 4 - Onwards an Upwards, covering the introduction of the Single Gate Initial Officer Training (SGIOT) systems and transition from IOT of the 80s to IOTC training of the new millennium.
Each book gives a summary of milestone events and achievements with embedded ‘hot links’ to supporting videos, audio and more detailed, researched material. Every attempt has been made to record facts as they occurred, with references to source material added where relevant. Many of the entries are extracts taken from the RAF College Journals issued at the time, themselves a reflection of College life.

Chief of the Air Staff - ex J39 Cadet & SFTS Course 5
Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Andrew Henry Humphrey
GCB, OBE, DFC, AFC & Two Bars (10 Jan 1921 – 24 Jan 1977)
J39 Entry; graduated with SFTS
The day war was declared, 134 cadets from six pre-war entries had their training abruptly terminated, the College being closed immediately for officer training. Some, like AH Humphrey (later MRAF Sir Andrew Humphrey) who had not completed officer training, were enlisted as airmen u/t pilots to undergo flying training at the Service Flying Training School (SFTS) set up at RAF Cranwell. Others transferred to the RAFVR and received flying training at other FTS. From these humble beginnings, Sir Andrew went on to win not just one but three AFCs, as well as a DFC, an OBE and a GCB. He rose to the rank of Marshal of the Royal Air Force, a rarity, was only the second Cranwellian - the first was Sir Dermot Boyle - to become Chief of the Air Staff and the first to become Chief of Defence Staff.

Hugh Gordon MALCOLM VCFlight Cadet J38 Entry
Born at Broughty Ferry, Dundee, Malcolm entered the Royal Air Force College Cranwell on 9 January 1936.
In January 1938, he joined 26 (Army Co-operation) squadron at Catterick. In May 1939, he suffered a serious head injury in a Westland Lysander crash. When the war started, Malcolm was serving with No 17 Training Group.
On 4 march 1941, he was promoted to Flight Lieutenant and was Air Liaison officer on General Bernard Montgomery's general staff.
By the end of 1941, he had risen to the rank of Squadron Leader and joined No 18 Squadron as a flight commander, flying the Br istol Blenhiem based in Suffolk, UK.

Ian Willoughby BAZALGETTE VC
SFTS Course 30 Sqn 2
VC Citation (London Gazette):
"On 4th August, 1944, Squadron Leader Bazalgette was ‘Master Bomber’ of a Pathfinder Squadron detailed to mark an important target at Trossy-St. Maximin for the main bomber force. When nearing the target his Lancaster came under heavy anti-aircraft fire. Both starboard engines were put out of action and serious fires broke out in the fuselage, and the starboard main-plane. The bomb aimer was badly wounded. As the deputy master bomber had already been shot down, the success of the attack depended on Squadron Leader Bazalgette, and this he knew. Despite the appalling conditions in his burning aircraft, he pressed on gallantly to the target, marking and bombing it accurately. That the attack was successful was due to his magnificent effort. After the bombs had been dropped the Lancaster dived, practically out of control. By expert airmanship and great exertion Squadron Leader Bazalgette regained control. But the port inner engine then failed and the whole of the starboard mainplane became a mass of flames. Squadron Leader Bazalgette fought bravely to bring his aircraft and crew to safety. The mid-upper gunner was overcome by fumes. Squadron Leader Bazalgette then ordered those of his crew who were able to leave by parachute to do so. He remained at the controls and attempted the almost hopeless task of landing the crippled and blazing aircraft in a last effort to save the wounded bomb aimer and helpless gunner. With superb skill, and taking great care to avoid a small French village nearby, he brought the aircraft down safely. Unfortunately, it then exploded and this gallant officer and his two comrades perished. His heroic sacrifice marked the climax of a long career of operations against the enemy. He always chose the more dangerous and exacting roles. His courage and devotion to duty were beyond praise.”

He was killed in action near Malta in 1942.
Laurence Frank SINCLAIR GC
On 30 Sep 40, a Blenheim bomber was taking off from RAF Wattisham when one engine cut out and the bomber crashed in flames.
Sinclair immediately went to the scene to help, but two 250lb bombs exploded before he reached it. Undeterred, and knowing full well that there were two more 250lb bombs on board, he pressed on and dashed into the burning wreck.
Of the three crew, he was able to drag out the air gunner, Sergeant Walters, and take h i m t o a n a m b u l a n c e . Unfortunately, he died from his injuries. The pilot, Sergeant J Merrett was killed.
The navigator, Sergeant Byron, survived, but Sinclair did not discover this for 50 years.

The Only War Damage to the College - by a Whitley
Enemy TrophiesWith his eye on the RAF College as a potential HQ, Goering sanctioned the presentation of two charcoal and chalk drawings of Richthofen and, his mentor, Boelcke; the College responded with two of our own WW1 fighter aces, Captain Albert Ball VC and Major Mick Mannock VC.
Offered as a gift to encourage mutual respect to “avert war”, the two drawings were presented during a visit by General Milch in 1938 and have remained here ever since. It is thought that these drawings are copies of originals retained by Germany, but lost when Soviet forces closed in on Berlin to force the German surrender.
A bust of Goering was presented at the same time and, surviving a temporary deployment to a skip, is located in the library, below the Japanese Document of Surrender. ________________________________
To the right of these drawings, flanked by two Samurai swords, is a copy of the Japanese Document of Surrender accepted on the Allies’ behalf by Earl Mountbatten. It is displayed with one of the fountain pens actually used to sign the Surrender Treaty
