Classics, with a twistThere is only one full day at JamBe 2013 left, and it looks like everyone is getting a bit tired. After the heat, the mass game and the party, it is obvious that people aren’t getting enough sleep. Still, there were more than enough candidates to have a go at some classic sports games with a little twist.

A four-way tug of war, a sawing competition and a blindfolded tent set up competition. And yes, it was all as complicated as it sounds. Some people preferred a simple game of ping pong, while others just got hold of a ball and started a simple game of football. Some weren’t exactly capable of physical activity anymore and tried their best to stay out of the heat.

No problem, there was more than enough to do and more than enough energy to have a little fun. And the others, they tried to save what little energy they have left for the closing ceremony. Even though it is almost over, make sure these last days are the best of all!

You can still compete in the Olympics today.

Reflecting on a better world

GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT VILLAGE

As scouts and guides, our goal is to leave the world a little better than we found it. This spirit is reflected in Global Development Village, where scouts and guides can take small steps towards a better world.

Drinking waterSimply opening a tap isn’t an option for everyone. Potanga and Watanka, for example, two neighbouring villages -one of them modern- had to construct conduits to get drinking water from one village to the other. To get the necessary materials, they challenged each other during different international games. As scouts and guides, we are aware of the value of water. We don’t waste it.

LGBTAn adaptation of the ‘Trivial Pursuit’ game was specially constructed for the occasion. Each task put a certain aspect of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender (LGBT) into the spotlight. Unfortunately, being able to freely live as LGBT depends on where you live. As scouts and guides, we respect every person, no matter what.

And others…Other activities included manually haying in a natural park, playing the Rafiki-game or meeting Oxfam. Global Development Village was an activity to stimulate reflection about our world, our nature, our friends and other people. As scouts and guides, we need to make the world a better place.

Yael (14), Israel: “What I will miss the most is the friends I made from other countries. The forest was great as well… I plan to stay in contact through Facebook and e-mail, with English, Spanish and Belgian friends. In Hebrew, we say ‘lehitraot’.”

Eddie (53), UK. “I’ll miss the people! And especially my fellow sub camp staff on Somnius. I loved talking to scouts and guides from around the world, and trying to talk even if we didn’t speak the same language. On the other side, I won’t miss waking up at 6.30am. What I want to say before I go? Thank you! Thanks for the invitation…”

• Shada was caught spying on certain body parts.

• The closet of Magnatio has helped a lot of people.

• Lucas mist Kim! Hij mist haar en wil graag afspreken.

Question du jour

Happy birthday to Luc today.

“We moeten hen soms echt inhouden.

Bedankt dames!

Among the many IST present, we have one very special couple who are celebrating their 10 year anniversary this week. They met during the very first Flamboree (the predecessor to JamBe) back in 2003. Today, 10 years on, they are still going strong and they are still here as IST.

Veerle and Wim (or Golden eagle) were both in volunteers for Scouts & Gidsen Vlaanderen when they met at Flamboree 2003. Wim was head of team Logistics for the 2003 Flamboree, when Veerle joined team Program at the last minute. Wim: “I started to plan the Flamboree logistics in 2001. This was the first time that we took on a challenge like this, so it was a huge task. There was no experience to fall back on.” Veerle knew someone who was involved in the organization, and joined later on.

And then, fate decided to help them. Veerle and Wim started working together to gather the necessary materials for the camp and started talking. A couple of days before the start of the camp, the air was full of sparks between the two. Veerle recalls her birthday. “On my birthday, all the guys on our team had shaven to give me three kisses for my birthday. Wim was obviously blushing. That night, we left the bar at 11pm and went for a long walk around De Kluis. We talked until four in the morning.”

Postcard gossipThe word about the new couple spread quickly after the camp. By the time Wim brought Veerle home, her parents already knew about it. Veerle: “Actually, my whole family knew. I had promised to send a postcard to my grandparents, who were expecting me to come home with a rich American or a handsome Norwegian. So, as promised, I already sent them a little postcard to tell them they would have settle with a common Belgian from Tienen. Turns out they put the postcard on display for everyone to see. When I came home, everyone already knew and was excited to meet Wim. It made things a lot easier for the next family party.”

One year after Flamboree, Veerle and Wim moved in together. At the second Flamboree in 2009, they both joined the IST and got married the year after. In October 2012, a beautiful little daughter called Floor came into this world. Right now, at JamBe 2013, Floor is joining her parents and starting her scouting career here, at De Kluis, where it all started.

Veerle and Wim found each other on an international camp. When they got married in 2010, Veerle’s grandfather jokingly told her: “You do recall what I told you about the American and the Norwegian, don’t you? Love can travel a long way, but love nearby is always better.”

Congratulations, Veerle and Wim, on your 10 year anniversary!
