Another piece of history

Scouting and architecture in Leuven

Somnius was the last sub camp to visit the city of Leuven during the ‘Scout & the City’ activity. By now, all of you know that this city has the oldest university of Belgium. Besides that, there’s also the InBev brewery (AB InBev is the biggest brewer in the world) and a remarkable mix of old and new. In other words, Leuven is well worth a visit and was greatly enjoyed by Somnius.

Once Somnius got off the train, Kevin and Karen (IST) had everyone gather around to explain the program of the day. Colourful groups of ten were composed, mixing boys and girls, nationalities and languages.

With yesterday being the hottest 2nd of August ever in Belgium (over 35°C in Leuven), many of the participants enjoyed the shadier parts of Leuven. Also, a lot of them visited the weekly market and bought some refreshing fruits or a cold drink to keep them going. The stairs of the city hall proved another place to take shelter from the sun while offering a good overview of the old town.

The history of scouting

Scouting is rarely associated with museums, but the scout museum proved a nice place to cool down and learn about scouting. Claire (Darlington, UK): “I didn’t know this kind of museum existed. There are good displays of the history of scouting. The whole museum merits to be visited. I really liked the badges from the past Flamborees.” Her friend Lauren also participated in Flamboree 2009: “I think there’s enough difference in the programme, but actually JamBe 2013 seems pretty much the same to me: it’s just as great!”

Three trains took the particpants back to Somnius and so the Scout and the City ends. But as scouts are everywhere, there will always be scouts in the city.

On a demandé une réaction sur le dernier «Scout in the City » qui a eu lieu pendant ce plus chaud 2 août depuis jamais. Luc, Simon et Thimoté (France). «Même avec une telle chaleur, Louvain est une très belle ville. Particulièrement les vieux bâtiments bien entretenus. En plus de ça, on est surpris par le tas de cyclistes en ville. C’est une nette différence, parce que chez nous, il y a surtout des voitures et des scooters.”

“Nous n’étions pas au courant de l’existence d’un Musée du Scoutisme et Guidisme. Mais c’est très bien. Le Musée est impressionnant. Il est dommage que les infos ne soient pas en français. Mais c’est surtout visuel. Cela nous permet quand même de découvrir l’évolution du scoutisme ici représentée.»

La recherche photos en ville était plutôt à l’aise pour la plupart des participants, ce qui est dû à la chaleur. Les équipes étaient mixtes de différents groupes, ce qui a donné l’occasion à mieux se faire la connaissance. Les photos n’étaient pas toujours si faciles à retrouver, mais les vrais scouts aiment les défis, n’est-ce pas ?

Trois trains ont conduit Somnius vers De Kluis, et comme ça, il n’y aura plus de scouts en ville. Ou qui sait… un jour on reviendra peut-être visiter cette ville ?

10.300km jusqu’à JamBe 2013

Abid (27, IST, Malaisie) a fait un voyage de 10.300 km pour arriver à JamBe. Ce ne sont pas moins de quinze heures de voyage qui ont été nécessaires pour le plus long voyage réalisé pour nous rejoindre. « C’est mon premier voyage en Europe, et je suis heureux de l’avoir fait », nous confie Abid.

Quel est ton rôle chez les scouts de Malaisie ?Je suis animateur pour les King Scouts. Ce sont des scouts de 18 ans et plus qui se sont distingués dans un certain nombre de services à la communauté : pour les écoles, les hopitaux, les mosquées, les pompiers... Par exemple, les King Scouts aident les pompiers en cas d’incendies de forêt dus aux fortes chaleurs. Il faut passer des examens, écrits et pratiques, pour devenir King Scout.

Que fais-tu ici à JamBe ?Je donne un coup de main dans le bar des collaborateurs, où je prépare des petits trucs à manger. J’aime bien y travailler avec mon ami Birger (Belgique). Hier, c’étaient des calamars frits : je n’avais jamais mangé ça, mais c’est bon !

Comme tu es derrière le bar le soir, tu as sûrement des ragots à nous rapporter ?Haha, non, je ne vous révèlerai rien ;-)

Une petite histoire vécue ici à JamBe alors ?Il y a quelques jours, au bar, nous avions organisé un karaoké. Alors que je chantais un chant malaisien, des amis m’ont rejoint et tenté de lire les sous-titres pour chanter avec moi. C’était un bon moment. J’ai aussi appris deux mots ici : ‘goedemorgen’ (bonjour en néerlandais) et ‘merci’.

Comment sont les Belges ?Pas mal d’asiatiques m’avaient dit que les européens parlaient très mal l’anglais et que j’aurais du mal à communiquer. Mais il n’en est rien ; ça se passe plutôt bien ! Je suis même plutôt enchanté de l’accueil chaleureux qu’on nous fait ici. Je serais ravi d’avoir des amis belges, et surtout de les revoir à Kuala Lumpur. Ils seront les bienvenus !

In de nacht van 1 op 2 augustus wandelden de scouts en gidsen van subkamp Chronos een spannende, lange speurtocht door de bossen van Sint-Joris-Weert. Zij werden door de subkampstaf opgedeeld in verschillende groepjes. In die groepjes zaten scouts uit allerlei landen, zodat zij samen elkaar konden helpen om deze speurtocht te voltooien. Om beurt vertrokken de groepjes van op het subkamp naar het beginpunt van de nachtelijke tocht.

Pikdonker modderbos‘Ik ben echt heel erg benieuwd wat de tocht inhoudt,’ zegt een Nederlandse scout van Scouting Mondriaan, ‘er is namelijk nog helemaal niks verteld over wat er gaat gebeuren.’ En zo was het inderdaad, want pas aan het startpunt van deze zoektocht, werd even kort verteld wat de bedoeling was. De scouts en gidsen zouden door de bossen een pad van cd’s volgen. Aan het einde van dit pad moesten ze vertrouwen op hun gehoor, omdat zij in het pikdonkere, modderige bos allerlei geluiden moesten volgen. Onderweg kwamen ze allerlei leuke opdrachten tegen.

Het gros van de reacties waren positief. “Het was echt een ontzettend spannende en leuke tocht!”, aldus een Engelse scout. “De opdrachten waren erg afwisselend en de flinke wandeling met de cd’s zorgde voor de nodige spanning.” Een Franse scout vond het unieke ervaring: “Een tocht als deze heb ik nooit eerder meegemaakt, de cd’s in de bomen en het

gebruik van walkietalkies waren erg bijzonder.”

Spijtig genoeg was het niet voor iedereen helemaal duidelijk wat de bedoeling was. Door een miscommunicatie liep de start van Light the night ook de nodige vertraging op. “Door de onduidelijkheden kon niet iedereen zich even goed inzetten tijdens de opdrachten”, vertelt een Nederlandse scout ons. “Zonde, want zo kon niet iedereen evenveel genieten van een unieke activiteit.”

Impressions about Belgium

Shai, 14, Israel« Ma première impression a été que c’était très propre, et que cette forêt est très belle. J’apprécie aussi les Belges, qui m’ont appris à dire « Hoe gaat het ? » (comment ça va) et « Ik hou van jou » (je t’aime). Ce que je vis ici en Belgique est au-delà de mes attentes ! »

Beth, 14, UK« It’s clean. And I love these woods where you can go and get lost ; it’s fun to find your way back. I already chatted a bit with some Belgian people. They are sweet and they try to listen as much as they can. When I arrived in Belgium, I expected a bit more chocolate, but I haven’t had any. »

So, Belgians, if you want to share chocolate with Beth, you will find her in sub camp Magnatio. « We are easy to find: we are very loud, we sing a lot and they are a lot of flags on our camp ».

Arnau, 19, Spain« Nous sommes arrivés 5 jours avant le début de JamBe 2013 pour visiter Bruges et Gand. Ce sont de très belles villes, dont on a apprécié les bâtiments gothiques et les bistrots dans lesquels on a pu goûter à quelques bières belges. Il y en a tellement, ici ! Il a pas mal plu pendant notre visite, mais heureusement la météo est plus clémente pour JamBe 2013.

Les Belges sont très amicaux. Ici à JamBe, nous sommes associés à un

groupe de Belges francophones. On est aussi heureux de voir qu’il y a pas mal de catalans, parce que ça nous permet de bien montrer nos chants aux autres groupes.

Après le camp, nous restons encore un peu en Belgique, dans la maison du père d’un scout de notre groupe, près de Louvain, pour profiter encore un peu du voyage. »

Rob and Heather, leaders, UK“Our first impressions? Terrible trains. Our train was canceled, we had to change platforms and just missed the next one… The people are friendly and helpful though. Leuven was beautiful, and the beach at Waterworld was just brilliant. Our group were really happy to be there, and so were we.”

Nicoline (15), Nanna (16), Christine (16), Louise (16), Denmark“The waffles are good! The weather is also good, except when it’s raining. Leuven has some similarities with Copenhagen, like the long street with all the shops. We also learned some dirty words in Dutch (or Flemish).”

Garret (38), Hong Kong“The way you work as IST here is very different to what we’re used to. You take it easy and take a lot of breaks. In Hong Kong, when we work, we really work with concentration. When I visited Leuven, I was impressed by the architecture. It is very well preserved.”

Words for Ed

If you came to Flamboree 2009, you probably saw Ed Messenger walking around. Ed was on the IST, from Watford near London, and was walking around on crutches. He didn’t let this stop him, though, and instead of taking it easier and staying in the media room where he was

working, he was usually seen out and about taking photos all round the camp.

Ed was involved in Scouting all his life, and was very well known there, he was also a huge supporter of Watford football club where he was also well known.

He had had cancer previously, and on returning home from the Flamboree was given the bad news that the cancer was back, and the outlook was not good. Despite this, he still remained optimistic, and was determined to go to Sweden 2011, and was given permission to go by the doctors. Unfortunately, he became ill shortly before and couldn’t go, and he sadly died in November that year.

However, Ed is here in spirit, and I’m sure he’s looking down on JamBe 2013 watching the fun, and is there laughing at us all and enjoying the camp with us.

We continue our tour of the different staff teams with the smallest team at JamBe 2013: team Show! To find out what they have been up to, we sat down with our four superheroes to talk about a show, a beautiful lady and four amazing sub camps.

Nice to meet you, heroes. We are halfway through the camp. What have you been up to these last days?Magnatio: Well, we’ve been resting mostly. Our fight with Phoenix was exhausting and we’ve only just recovered. The heat isn’t helping either (smiles). Lundea: Of course, the last few days have also been about meeting the participants! We have been waiting for them for so long, and it has been great meeting them. Somnius: We’ve watched the participants decorate the Arena in our colors and even write songs for us. It gives us all the energy we need to survive the rest of the camp! Chronos: And of course, conquer the heart of Heavenly. The second part of the superhero show is all or nothing, and for Chronos, winning is everything. Lundea: Ha! Don’t be silly, Heavenly is mine! Somnius: Don’t count on it!

Please heroes, focus! Tell me, what powers are you going to use to win Heavenly’s heart?Magnatio: Everyone knows girls are looking for smart and handsome men. And there is no one smarter than I am. Being handsome doesn’t really matter. My willpower is second to none, and Heavenly will love me for it! Chronos: Don’t make me laugh! I am a master of time. I can show Heavenly anything she wants. I can stop time. We’ll be together for all eternity. Who wouldn’t want that? Lundea: I think I’ll pass. For me, and for Heavenly, it’s all about Razzle dazzle. There is always a party when I am around, and life is all about partying, isn’t it? Somnius: I appreciate the good things in life: sleep, silence and romance. If anyone ever bothers Heavenly, they have to go through my sleeping powder. In the end, it’ll be just the two of us.

It looks like it’s going to be an intense competition! But what about Phoenix?Chronos: I don’t really know, to be honest. It’s impossible he survived our attacks. Somnius: Let’s say we are prepared for him if shows up. Lundea: We have learned our lesson. We’ll work together. Magnatio: With our sub camps behind us, no one can stop us!
