From the President’s Notebook…

March — a month of changes, daylight savings time, spring plants awakening, pushing upwards to a warm sun-ny view, birds arriving after their long winter vacation, thesmell of rain as it cleans up winter’s leftovers, plant andseed catalogs; enough to fill a recycling container, and forWCMGVs planning for the new garden season. Our blue-birds arrived a week ago to check out the housing situa-tion. Canadian geese have claimed the pond as their nest-ing site. A hungry robin gleaned breakfast from a few crabapples missed by the pileated woodpecker who wintered atour yard. A walk around the farm produced a bouquet ofpussy willows to bring spring inside. Daffodils plantedthroughout our property will bloom soon; low-maintenancewith bright, uplifting, long-lasting blooms both in fieldsand woodlands, plus as a cut flower.

March 22 is our first membership meeting of the year. This is a very special evening as we recognize memberswho have accumulated enough volunteer hours to meetaward milestones. Our hospitality committee will serve aspecial awards cake to help us celebrate this annual event. This year we have a very long list of volunteers who willreceive awards. We invite all WCMGVs to attend this veryspecial meeting as we say thanks to members receivingrecognition. There are many events planned for 2016. Thenewsletter is just one way of communication. Please readthe WCMGV newsletter as soon as you receive it! Checkout our WCMGV website, and Facebook, too. Most im-portant, get involved with at least one committee, project, team, or event. Teri has arranged numerous volunteer op-portunities/meetings for several subjects and invited MGVswith interest in a particular subject to attend. Teams arenow being formed. If you didn’t make it to any of thescheduled meetings but now would like to check out one ofthe teams, you’re welcome to attend any meeting. A list ofteams and contacts will be available in the near future!

Check out the contents of this newsletter for the up-coming April seminar, Wisconsin Rapids Plant Sale in May,Garden Walk in July and the super monthly membershipprogram topics. How many MGV groups have bears at theirmeetings? Check out the April program for more details.Yes, the site is a zoo!

The 20th Anniversary of WCMGV is 2017. One team —the cookbook committee, has already worked over a yearto produce an anniversary cookbook. This is just the be-ginning of our yearlong celebration for 2017 as the cook-book has arrived! Now it is time for all WCMGVs to put ontheir creative thinking garden hat! The 2017 WCMGV 20th

Anniversary is your celebration. We are starting now assome ideas may take time to organize and plan. To give youall a jumpstart, a group of WCMGVs got together, brain-stormed and provided ideas for you to think about! To findout more, check out the 2017 WCMGV 20th Anniversaryarticle on page 3.

As I mentioned before, March is a month of change. Forthe most part, I love changes, new ideas, Wisconsin fourseasons, new food offerings, new ways to garden, science ofplants and nature and experimenting. One change that willhappen at the end of March is our Horticulture Advisor,Teri Lessig is leaving UW Extension. This change is a sadone! Teri has served WCMGV for over ten years and provid-ed an amazing amount of support to the WCMGVs duringher tenure.

News from TeriGreetings and happy wonderful warm days in March!

Some of you have probably heard already, but I have offi-cially announced my resignation as Horticulture Educator forUWEX. In a way, this was a very difficult decision for me tomake and in another way it was the easiest decision I couldhave been faced with. I really enjoyed working for Extension, answering the variety of questions that came into the office, giving presentations; both locally and in surrounding coun-ties, radio appearances, writing articles, and most of all, asadviser to the Wood County Master Gardeners. March 1stmarked my 10-year anniversary with extension. Hard to be-lieve it has been that long. I feel that I have gotten to knoweach Master Gardener Volunteer, whether they were alreadypart of this organization, or came in during my tenure. Icount many of you as a good friend. These are the reasons itwas difficult to make the ultimate decision to leave at the endof March.

The easy part was that my family needs me. When mymother tells me she cannot work as much and needs me atthe farm more, I simply say ok. I cannot and will not say noto my mother.

In that respect, my decision was a no-brainer. I cannotthank all of you enough. Thank you for your encouragementand support. You have inspired me with your dedication andpassion. Wood County is very lucky to have this great groupof volunteers in each community, beautifying and educating.

As far as the future, Wood County has dedicated to re-hiring my position. This is excellent news even in the face ofUWEX reformation. And I will certainly still be around. Youcan always find me at my parent's farm in Plainfield, e-mailme at [email protected], or give me a call at 715.572.0593. Iam also on Facebook and have a blog detailing my adven-tures. I am willing to answer horticulture questions, or anyquestions for that matter.

With that, I will say thank you once again, from the bot-tom of my heart. And on to a new chapter!!

April Garden Guide

Start tomato seeds indoors. Research shows seven-week old transplants produce earliest fruit and best overall results.

Cut back over-wintered geraniums to six to eight inches.

Start fast-growing annual flowers indoors.

Start seedlings of eggplant, okra, peppers and broccoli.

Set out lily of the valley clumps with pips just even with the ground.

When annual beds can be worked, turn over green manure crop such as annual rye in beds for annuals andvegetables. If none was planted, top-dress with compost or well-rotted manure.

Remove mulch from spring flowering bulb beds.

Container grown or balled and burlapped trees and shrubs can be planted at any time during the growing season.

Divide perennials and pot for the WCMGV plant sale by the end of the month. This will provide roots time to get estab-lished.

Prune and fertilize all bush fruits and grapes. Fertilize fruit trees as soon as possible after ground thaws but beforeblossoming.

Plant rhubarb and asparagus as soon as ground can be worked.

Remove rose cones when soil thaws. Gradually remove soil mound from around rose plants.

Reminder of MG Volunteer Project EtiquetteEvery fall, WCMGV members are asked to choose projects or committees they wish to volunteer their time and energy sup-

porting for the next gardening season. During the winter months when we don’t meet, those sign-up sheets are compiled intoproject lists and published in an early spring newsletter. When the weather begins to warm and the robins return, project chairsget the lists out and begin to plan tasks according to the number of volunteers, work to be done and spring temperatures.

Year after year, committee and project chairpersons work hard planning meetings and work-day activities to make the mostof our time and resources. One of the most time consuming parts of being a project chairman is calling and e-mailing volunteersfrom the project list and gathering enough hands to be productive.

Wouldn’t it be great if it always worked out to everyone’s convenience, the weather cooperated and all the work got done? (OhHeaven!!) But because it isn’t that easy, try to make it less frustrating for all of us. First of all - - - - - - - Common courtesy is apersonal and MG requirement.Members: If you signed up to work on a project remember – a committee is counting on you! If you changed your mind over thewinter, it’s your responsibility to notify the chairperson in a timely manner. And please, don’t be embarrassed to make that callor send that e-mail.

If you have been contacted via e-mail or phone message and can’t work on a specific planned date – please have the courtesyto inform the chairperson you aren’t available for that time.

If you can work at a different time and the chair agrees – ask for a specific task and commit to having it done within a fewdays of the original work date.

Project Chairpersons: Be organized! Remember – your committee deserves reasonable notice of a project workday. And if youdon’t give reasonable notice, don’t complain if the volunteers don’t show.

A project is like a holiday party; invite, reply, attend and enjoy, all in good time. – So much more enjoyable for everyone.

Good Two-Way Communication is a major key to project success!
