Adult and older youth leaders enhance learning for members through sharing their knowledge and experiences. Meetings can be scheduled throughout the year, and the number will vary depending upon the project area and what you are wanting to accomplish. Winter months can be a good time to bring kids together for fun and learning. Members’ interest is most ready to learn when they are signing up for projects and when they get their project literature. Club organizational leaders should let project leaders know which projects club members are enrolled in early in the year. Let members know the meeting schedule as far in advance as possible. Here are some tips for successful meetings: Find out what the members want to learn and accomplish in their projects. (The literature can be an excellent source for ideas.) Review any safety measures that members will need to follow upfront. Do an introductory activity related to the project so that members get to know one another. Have something for the members to complete at the meeting and take home. Talk about what supplies will be needed and how the project meeting supplies will be paid for upfront. Assess when members are available for additional meetings, and the number of meetings they want. Ask members or parents to bring calendars to aid decisions. Encourage parents to participate in meetings. If you are leading beginning level projects, ask older members in the project to help you. This is a great leadership experience for them! Parents are another excellent source of help. Don’t hesitate to ask them to stay for the meeting and be actively involved in their child’s project work. We all have talents to share with youth. CLOVER CONNECTION January 2018

Dear 4-H Families and Friends:

Happy 2018 and Best Wishes for a healthy and productive year ahead!! A new year brings a new opportunity to learn and grow through 4-H!! Thanks to all the volunteers who met at our committee meetings in November to plan the educational calendar for 2018, your work is most appreciated and makes our program strong. Be sure to read the “Clover Connection” from cover to cover so you do not miss important information and deadlines!! This month I want to highlight the importance of project meetings in the 4-H experience. January is Project Meeting Focus Month: Project Meetings are an Important Part of the 4-H Experience for Youth! Project meetings are an important component of the educational experience for 4-H kids. Here are some tips for successful meetings:

· Find out what the members want to learn and accomplish in their projects. (The literature can be an excellent source for ideas.)

· Review any safety measures that members will need to follow upfront. · Do an introductory activity related to the project so that members get to know one another. · Have something for the members to complete at the meeting and take home. · Talk about what supplies will be needed and how the project meeting supplies will be paid for upfront. · Assess when members are available for additional meetings, and the number of meetings they want.

Ask members or parents to bring calendars to aid decisions. · Encourage parents to participate in meetings.

If you are leading beginning level projects, ask older members in the project to help you. This is a great leadership experience for them! Parents are another excellent source of help. Don’t hesitate to ask them to stay for the meeting and be actively involved in their child’s project work. We all have talents to share with youth. Sharing knowledge and making the experience fun will encourage youth to continue to come back to the next meeting. Above all, make sure the learning experience is fun! Sincerely,

Chuck Prissel 4-H Youth Development Agent

Club Represented When the Money Gets

Spent????? The Polk County 4-H

Leaders Federation Board of Directors is a very important group for the Polk County 4-H program. This board oversees the program and makes very important decisions about how and where the financial resources of the program get spent. They also provide direction for the educational programs. Is your club being represented?? Each club can send one adult and one youth member as representatives to the board. Youth have an equal voice at the table. The board meets six times a year and the meeting dates for this 4-H calendar year are:

January 22, 2018 7:00 p.m. B.L. March 26, 2018 7:00 p.m. B.L.

May 21, 2018 7:00 p.m. Fair Park July 16, 2018 7:00 p.m. Fair Park

Becoming a 4-H Volunteer 4-H Volunteers are valued partners in working with our youth and help make 4-H possible. In order to volunteer, previous 4-H Youth Development experience is not necessary. The most important qualification is a desire to work with young people and help them grow through educational experiences and gain positive life skills. Please consider sharing your time and talents! Adult volunteers working together with youth make a difference in the lives of young people. Volunteers work with UW-Extension professionals to develop the life skills of youth members, thus benefiting the state, employers, and the economy. Volunteers extend the resources of UW-Extension as they work with staff to deliver educational programs. Volunteering is a privilege. How does one become a volunteer? If you have not already done so, go to Wisconsin 4HOnline and create a family profile. Instructions can be found on the polk.uwex.edu website under the 4H enrollment tab. If your family is already in the

system, do not create a new family profile, just make sure you are entered into your family account and check that you want to be a 4-H volunteer. A background check will be conducted on you by the state and you will be contacted by GIS through e-mail requesting additional information needed in order for the state to conduct the background check and begin your Volunteer in Preparation (VIP) process. Another step in the process, you can take the Online Mandated Reporter Training for 4-H Volunteers. Please see the informational sheet included in the November 2017 Clover Connection or visit the polk.uwex.edu website. You can also contact the Polk County Extension Office at 715.485.8600 for assistance. Once the background check is successfully completed and you have completed the Online Mandated Reporter Training for 4-H Volunteers, there is one more important step in the process; taking the Volunteer in Preparation (VIP) Training! Trainings will be offered at the Polk County Government Center on the following dates and times:

Thursday, January 18, 2018 at 6:30 p.m.

Monday, February 26, 2018 at 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. Please contact Colleen at 715.485.8600 or [email protected] to register for the classes. Registration is required to ensure we have enough handout materials and to be able to contact you in case the class is cancelled due to weather or low enrollment. Name: _____________________________

Annual 4-H Volunteer Leader Training 2018- “VIP” Volunteer In Preparation- Your Chance to re-vamp/update your

Volunteer Knowledge!! As part of the 4-H Club Charter process, each county will be offering annual volunteer leader trainings. Each club is encouraged to have one participant attending these annual trainings to bring the information back to the clubs. The trainings will be valuable for all youth and adult leaders, and anyone is welcome to attend. This year’s training again will be the “VIP” Volunteers In Preparation and will be offered three times during the spring months: Thursday, January 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Government Center in Balsam Lake. Monday, February 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Government Center in Balsam Lake. Tuesday, April 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Government Center in Balsam Lake. This Annual 4-H Volunteer Leader Training is the same training for new volunteers- but this is your chance to update and revamp your Volunteer knowledge!! This will be an opportunity for any leader to learn more about the new training and to interact with other volunteers both new and experienced. We are looking forward to a great evening of interactive discussions and learning from each other. Supporting 4-H volunteers in their role and strengthening the 4-H Club are top priorities for Wisconsin. It is critical that volunteers have the support, tools, and training they need to be effective in helping youth gain the most they can from their 4-H experience. These workshops will help volunteers enhance those skills REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED!! To register for these workshops, please fill out the following information, or contact the Polk County Extension Office at 715.485.8600.
