A Whisper in the Windby

Muriel Morgan Pfeifer(1934-2014)

(Use with permission)

Wanderoos: The early settlers in this community were Scandinavians

with names like Olson, Frederickson, Christenson, Carlson and Johnson, The nearest trading center was either St. Croix Falls or a bit closer, Nye or Little Falls - a long, hard day’s trip on foot, a distance of seven miles each way. The women of the family carried their butter and eggs (around 8 / 10 cents a # of butter and about the same for a dozen eggs) to trade for sugar, coffee and kerosene. The community started out being called Dwight and was really a boom town - a bank, garage, two general stores, a hardware store, two restaurants, a lumberyard, two bars and several homes. Eventually a cheese factory, a pickle factory, an elevator, a mill, a potato warehouse, a blacksmith shop and several additional dwellings. With so many business places the community felt they needed a Post Office. However, when they applied for Post Office of their own (mail service had come through Nye or Deronda) the name Dwight was already taken and a new name was required. The local cheese maker was one, I.K. Wanderoos. The story goes that his name was sent into Washington D.C. as a joke and the Postal Department choose it - the only town with that name in the entire U.S.A. Dr. Perrin, OF Star Prairie was not only the family doctor but a friend to most in the community. The railroad came through on what was called “Spur Three,” being the third spur from St. Paul. Here Mr. Kroon built the first general store. Ole Christenson and Jack Jackson were later owners. The first school was on the corner of the former John Orner farm. The school later moved and was called the Simon Torgerson School. A new school was built in the 1920s but nothing remains of any of the old schools but memories. This community of thrifty Norwegians wanted a church of their own (distance to Deronda, Little Falls and Pine Lake). So, a congregation was formed and a church was built - Trinity Lutheran Church, established in 1896 - still a thriving congregation-2016.

POLK COUNTY CEMETERY SEXTONSThe chart on the following page (page 5) is the first page of a 3 page list for the

cemeteries and sextons of Polk County, Wisconsin. This list includes:

The township (within Polk County) in which the cemetery is located;the Sexton’s name (at the time of chart was initially complied)

the Sexton’s phone #, and sometimes the Range/????????.The list may not be complete and it may be that the Sexton, for any given cemetery,

has changed, as then will the phone # also have changed. This chart can be very useful for those persons doing family history research. Please send additions or

corrections to Jay Bergstrand <[email protected]>as this project goes forward moving the entire list out into the greater genealogy community. Knowing the name / phone # / location of a cemetery sexton (where you believe one of your

ancestors may be laid to rest) makes the search for family history that much easier.

RAILROAD RETIREMENT BOARD

TWIN PORTS GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

Railroad Records for Genealogy From “Ancestral Findings” 4/25/2016 Genealogy Helps and Look Ups, a free blog newsletter just for signing up. This is just a snip from the whole article. As with most genealogy records, some railroad records are easier to find than others. The place you should start looking, if you don’t already know where to find the records you want for your ancestor, is the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board. https://www.rrb.gov (click on the Public link on right side and there is a link on how to get genealogical information). This is the organization that administers the current benefits program for today’s railroad workers. These records include anyone who worked for the railroad for a decade or more after the board was created in 1935. You can get detailed employment, personnel, and retirement records for your ancestor from this board. Bobbi Hoyt, Editor

have collected over the years. Thanks again.Ms. Thomas and her

husband also joined the PCGS group as the members and friendsenjoyed a tour under the guidance of Dave Knutson,

After the beginners in family history research have data on themselves, talked to relatives, organized the information, been to the local library and joined a genealogy society, (and for those

not yet comfortable withusing the computer programs to start out with) purchasing copies of documents at your local

courthouse can become costly. PCGS members found the following three sheets that can be used to copy

“ Information from the record books located in the Register of Deeds Office, Polk County, Balsam Lake, Wisconsin. “
