History Lecture Series American Political PartiesTake a look at our unique form of democracy, the two-party system that developed quite by accident. Indeed, the Constitution’s authors did not plan for a party system at all when they drafted this new government in 1787. Nonetheless, we have a system dominated by two parties whose names and platforms have changed over the years. As in the case of the Democrats and Republicans, the names have remained constant since 1856, but what the parties stand for has shifted dramatically since the 1930s and 1980s. Additionally, we will look at some of the lesser known political movements such as the Temperance Party, Freesoilers, the Know Nothings, Greenbackers, Populists, Progressives, the American Party. Light refreshments included.Thurs // April 6 // 6 – 7:30 PMUW-MWC Aldo Leopold Science Building, Room 126 // $15*

What’s in the Constitution?Come face to face with aspects of this vital document that defines modern America. After all, the federal system we have today is the second form of government we  have had since independence from Great Britain in 1783. We think that we know the document, but where is it written that all men may vote? Did the Founders really recognize and protect slavery in the Constitution? Were the men who wrote the Constitution acting legally? Or had they moved beyond the approved purpose of the convention to do something completely different? We will also examine how the Bill of Rights emerged as a political compromise to secure ratification of the Constitution, along with other incentives to get buy-in with the new government.Thurs // April 13 // 6 – 7:30 PMUW-MWC Aldo Leopold Science Building, Room 126 // $15* History professor, Jeff Kleiman has taught at the UW Marshfield/ Wood County since 1988. He has researched and published articles on American political history and politics. His current research is on the Holocaust, with focus on survivors and deniers.

Two worlds collide in this “breath-taking and exquisite” (The New York Times) musical, directed by Bartlett Sher. One of Rodgers & Hammer-stein’s finest works, THE KING AND I boasts a score that features much beloved classics as Getting to know you, I Whistle a Happy Tune and Shall We Dance… Set in 1860’s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of unconventional and tempestu-ous relationship between the King of Sian and Ann Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialist world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. Winner of 4 Tony Awards include Best Revival of Musical in 2015. After this wonderful treat, we will dine in one of Minneapolis upcoming new restaurants, The Rabbit Hole. This gastropub is our nod to Korean Pogjang-machas, but the food is Korean by way of Los Angeles. The Zagt Review of this restaurant, “Hip locals feel “lucky to have” this hideaway in Phillips’ Midtown Global Market, where “innovative” Korean plates pair with “divine” craft cocktails; the “unique”, industrial-style space features graffiti-bedecked booths as well as a hopping bar. Vogue cheers, “it’s a must-see you’ll remember for years to come!” Directed by visionary Tony winner Diane Paulus, FINDING NEVERLAND tells the incredible story behind one of the world’s most beloved characters: Peter Pan. With a little bit of pixie dust and a lot of faith, Barrie takes this monumental leap, leaving his old world behind for Neverland where nothing is impossible and the wonder of childhood lasts forever.
