INTRODUCTION
This project
was inspired by
AIGA gold medalist
Wolfgang Weingart for
his accomplishments in
Graphic Design.
The process involved
selection, research,
creation and refinements,
all leading to the final
production of an album
completely inspired by
Weingart’s life and style.
RESEARCHWolfgang Weingart was born near the Swiss border of Germany, in the Salem Valley, in 1941. In his late teens he
attended school for typography in Switzerland where he discovered set metal type and began to refine his
skills. He continued to develop his craft through an apprenticeship and various mentorships in his twenties.
In 1968, Weingart was invited to teach a typography class at the Schule für Gestaltung in Basel, Switzerland.
This is the place that where Weingart would start to make a significant impact in the world of design.
His style quickly spread, drawing students from the around. Weingart’s style showcases classic Swiss order
juxtaposed with his own purposeful disorder. He has an intentional carelessness that manifests itself through
various distortions of font, weight, stroke, and spacing. Weingart’s breaking of boundaries and stretching of
design norms came to be known as New Wave or Swiss Punk typography.

DEFENSEFor my album design, I executed intentional design
choices based on my research that I feel effectively
and accurately represent the life and style of Wolfgang
Weingart. Inspired by his orderly chaos, I intended to
create a design that conveys his black and white print
media influences paired with unconventional type choices.
I included allusions to his birthplace, Germany, as well as
the country that launched his career, Switzerland. I also
included a picture of a linotype machine which is a nod
to his original style of metal type setting. I kept in line
with his black and white style with the exception of an
accented a pop of red which was chosen to depict the
starkness of his style and personal distinction. Various
geometric shapes and layers were added in an effort to
gain some of the depth and distortion that Weingart is
famous for.
Finally, I decided to name the album,“New Wave”,
after Weingart’s own curated style of typography.
Additionally, I selected only one song to be featured
on this album, titled, “Misinterpreted”, inspired by a
quote from Weingart.
All of these choices seek to portray the wild, pioneering
mind and style of Wolfgang Weingart.
