Message from Our Joint Chief Executives
The busy Christmas season will soon be upon us. We are planning 2 trips for carers and
families in December. On Thursday 3rd December in the evening we have 52 tickets for the
production of ‘Cats’ at the London Palladium. This theatre trip is open to carers and
immediate family members only. On Sunday 13th December we have organised a shopping
trip to the Winter Wonderland Christmas Market in Hyde Park which is open to carers,
families and friends. Details of both trips are on page 7 and please see the attached flyers
to book.
Our Autumn Ball is on Saturday 3rd October and we are really pleased that all tickets are
sold out. We would like to thank the very generous donors of prizes and gifts. We look
forward to reporting how much we have raised towards our Smiles for Sibs groups. A huge
Thank You also goes to Allan Goddard, James Regan and Phil Timm who between them
over the summer have raised a huge £1587.89 for our charity. Simon Crute will be running
the London Marathon for us in April 2016 and has agreed to run a marathon for every
£500 he receives in sponsorship. Details of his Virgin Moneygiving page are on page 2 if
you want to sponsor him and see him run more than one marathon…
Our next Thinking Ahead Workshop is being held on Thursday 8th October and is aimed at
older carers. There are a few places left. If you would like to book a place see page 5 for
details.
A date for your diary. We will be holding the Children’s Christmas Party at the CresCent
Centre on Friday 4th December. Details of how to book places will be sent out with the
next mailing.
We have sadly said ‘goodbye’ to a number of staff this quarter who have moved on to
University and other opportunities but are pleased to have recruited new staff to replace
them (details on page 3). We still have a vacancy for a Senior Playworker to run the
Smiles for Sibs group in Woodley. This post pays £10.50 per hour – see page 3 for details.
A quick plug for other groups – the CAN Family Fun & Information Day will be held on
Saturday 10th October, details are on page 9. The Wokingham Learning Disability
Partnership will be holding a drop-in coffee morning on Friday 9th October, the theme will
be ‘Behaviour that Challenges’ and details are page 8.
Best wishes

FUNDRAISING & NEWS
Our fundraisers have been very busy on our behalf over the summer, and we thank them all for their efforts and commitment on behalf of the charity. The total raised
this quarter is £1661.89 which includes:

£250.00
James Regan

Keen runner Simon Crute, from local running club the Finch Coasters, won our ballot
to run the 2016 London Marathon. He is now in training for the event which is the biggest marathon event in the world, and will take place on 24 April 2016. To
sponsor Simon please go to his Virgin Money Giving webpage at: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Simon_c
Simon has (foolishly!?) offered to run one marathon for every £500 he is sponsored, so the more he is sponsored, the more he will run. All the money he raises will be
donated to Wokingham, Bracknell & Districts Mencap, and he will be paying all his expenses himself. So please sponsor Simon and let’s see how many marathons we
can make him run next year.

SMILES FOR SIBS TRIP TO BOSCOMBE
On Monday 27th July the Woodley and Bracknell Smiles for Sibs groups joined up and
eleven of them had a lovely day out at Boscombe in Dorset. After a wet weekend the
sun decided it was time to make an appearance and they had a pleasant drive down.
Although it was a bit chilly on the beach about half of the children went into the water.
Then they had a game of mini golf, ice-creams and a play in the park before heading
back. Everyone had a lovely day.

Blue Badge Theft Increases
As reported in Disabled Motoring UK
The Local Government Association has
reported that Blue Badge theft has doubled in
12 months. In 2013 the number of reported
stolen Blue Badges was 656 which soared to
1756 in 2014, an increase of 167%.
A Blue Badge entitles the holder to on-street
parking concessions and in certain car parks
and off-street concessions. For genuine holders
the Blue Badge is highly valuable as it also
allows them to park close to the services they
need to access. For fraudsters it is highly
valuable as it is a way of dodging parking
charges. Blue Badge holders are also exempt
from paying the London congestion charge
which alone could be a saving of £2500 a year.
In 2014 councils prosecuted 565 offenders and
some councils have set up specific enforcement
teams to tackle Blue Badge fraud and misuse.
