I’ve worked in the YWCA’s Child Enrichment Pro-grams for 24 years. I spent 16 years with the pre-school students, and have been working with theinfants and toddlers for 8 years. It’s been a real bless-ing being with those babies. Working with kids keepsyou honest! I’ve been blessed to have a job that Ilove, and I get paid to do it.The main reason I give to the YWCA is because ofwhat our programs offer to the children. The programgrows with the kids, and the YW has great teachers. It’s great to see some of the kids I had in my class-room during my first year here come back and visit mewith their own babies. It’s nice to be remembered.Over the years I have learned that every child isunique and just having a small part in their lives hasbeen amazing. I know it’s an old cliché, but these chil-dren really are our future.

We moved to Adams County 25 years ago when we bought our farm in Aspers. We both had been active for most of our lives (Sandra as an aerobics instruc-tor, Ted through construction work and his love of dancing). Since joining theYWCA, we’ve used the fitness center and pool, but we’ve recently becomeregulars in the YWCA’s Zumba classes. One evening Ted heard the upbeatmusic pouring from the class and decided he just had to try it out. From thatpoint, we were hooked!

As with any new exercise, we were sore the first few days, but after that we feltgreat. Everyone in class moves at their own pace and the instructors are excel-lent. When we first started, Ted was the only man in the class, but he didn’t feeluncomfortable among all the ladies. There are now several men who join theclass each evening.

The group atmosphere keeps us motivated. This camaraderie is the reason I(Sandra) became an exercise instructor years ago. Now when we hear a songfrom class on the radio in the car, we can’t help but move to the beat…evenwhen other drivers stare!

The YWCA has enabled us to stay active into our 60s. There was a period ofabout a year when we let our membership lapse and we realized how creakywe had become. I (Sandra) began to have a hard time climbing stairs, but oncewe got back into our exercise routine, the stairs were no longer a problem.

We encourage everyone to take advantage of the fitness opportunities at theYWCA. Try any class for free the first time…like us, you’ll be back for more!
