2014 Queensland Winter Racing Carnival 3

The Queensland Winter Racing Carnival is fast approaching once again. It has always been a much anticipated time for racing fans in Queensland. The industry participants and stakeholders in Queensland look forward to this time each year. It brings together the best Queensland has to offer. This is equally so in terms of the quality racehorses on show, as well as hospitality to be enjoyed, and the excitement of the race day experience.

However, the carnival has now rightly earned its place at the highest calibre of racing in Australia. The quality of racehorses on display has continued to increase year on year. There is no longer any doubt that horses who race in Queensland in the winter, gain an enormous advantage in the next spring. The Queensland Carnival is an event that Australia’s premier trainers and most savvy owners know cannot afford to be missed if their horses are going to maximise their chances for the following spring carnivals.

A quick review of a small selection of horses to compete in the 2013 Winter Carnival, and their domination of the following spring carnivals is nothing short of astounding.

Whether it be the locals, such as Buffering, The Booms (Spirit and Temple), Fire Up Fifi, Sizzling and Solzhenitsyn, or the visitors like Zoustar, Boban, Streama, Red Tracer, Fontelina, Hawkspur, Dear Demi, Precedence and more, there can no longer be any doubt about the clear advantage horses gain by racing at the highest level in winter.

We have again made a few subtle but exciting changes aimed at continuing to improve the program, especially considering that it provides such a valuable springboard for Australia’s emerging spring stars. The progression of races has been improved, as well as the progression towards the country’s premier sprint handicap “The Stradbroke”, which again this year will carry a $1million winner’s cheque.

I encourage all industry participants to peruse the handy feature race calendar contained in this booklet to see how the changes may have affected the likely programs for any horses of which you may have an interest.

The highlight as always will be the Brisbane Winter Carnival with five days of the highest calibre racing. The Brisbane Racing Club, our biggest club, can be relied on yet again to put on a show, typically Queensland, but of the highest standard. The Brisbane Carnival is, of course, supported magnificently both before and after by Toowoomba, Gold Coast, Ipswich and Sunshine Coast Clubs, as they provide their own unique day out, and vital support races.

I further encourage you to stay on and join Queenslanders in the communities around the state as they continue the carnival and showcase their own “big day”. We are working with the clubs throughout the state to ensure we do everything we can to enable them to deliver the best possible racing and most entertaining and enjoyable event that they possibly can. You will be given the warmest welcome no matter which of our provincial days you visit and share the excitement of great racing with great people and hospitality only seen in Queensland.

As you peruse this publication, you will find the information needed to maximise your participation in, and enjoyment of, the Carnival. The racing industry in Queensland comes together in winter to provide the facilities that are needed by visitors to Queensland, or Queenslanders venturing outside their home territory to other parts of Queensland. Whether you require information in regard to bringing horses to, or around, Queensland, or are researching stabling and training options, mapping a racing program suitable to an individual horse, or just planning a visit to become part of the excitement and colour of this great racing event, this document is targeted at getting you well on the way to finding out all you need to know.

We encourage you to use the information in this booklet, but also feel free to contact anyone of the numerous contacts listed to get any further information you need.

Queenslanders are quite rightly proud of the Winter Racing Carnival, and love nothing more than to compete against the best on home soil.

We look forward to welcoming visitors from Australia and overseas, both horses and fans, to the “Sunshine State”, to take their part in one of the countries not-to-be-missed racing carnivals. Only here in the Queensland winter sunshine, can you be sure to catch a first glimpse of the next group of superstars who will go onto further glory in the following spring.

PRIME MINISTER’S CUP DAY3 MAY 2014

The prestigious Prime Minister’s Cup Day is one of the highlights on the Gold Coast Turf Club’s racing calendar. The day boasts six Black Type races and more than $1million in prizemoney. It is a spectacular day of racing on the Gold Coast and the perfect place to take in the Winter Carnival action, all in their brand new, state-of-the-art grandstand which was completed in late 2013. The multimillion dollar redevelopment includes grandstand improvements, 10 new corporate suites refurbished members area bar and restaurant facilities.

ABOUT GOLD COAST TURF CLUBRacing on the Gold Coast dates back to the 1890’s when an occasional public meeting was run in the old cane paddocks of Bundall, not far from the present Gold Coast Turf Club. Hosting approximately 60 race meetings each season, the Gold Coast Turf Club is home to several highly anticipated major events including the Prime Minister’s Cup and the January Magic Millions Carnival.

In 1974, the Prime Minister’s Cup was launched, carrying Australia’s richest purse for a provincial race of $30,000 and in 2002, the Prime Minister’s Cup, then sponsored by Conrad Jupiters became a stand-alone Saturday race meeting. In an exciting coup for the Club, the Ken Russell Memorial was upgraded by the Australian Racing Board to Group 3 status in September 2013 providing the club with three Group status races, which will further encourage quality horses to travel to the coast and race amongst the best.

ABOUT TOWNSVILLE TURF CLUBThe Townsville Turf Club holds its place as one of Australia’s major provincial race Clubs, with TAB and SKY Channel coverage nationwide on most race meetings. The Club boasts a great range of facilities and some of the most well maintained and beautified gardens and grounds in North Queensland. The Club is proud of its recently renovated Historic Heritage Listed Public Grandstand overlooking the open plan layout and track at the foothills of the huge Mount Stuart, alongside sits its large Members and Industry Grandstand.

Racing at Cluden Park in Townsville has a long and historic tradition dating back to the first race meeting which was a three-day affair from August 15-17 in 1866 and featured the Town Plate run over three miles under-weight for age conditions. In 1994, the future direction of racing in Townsville was flagged when the TTC staged seven Friday full-TAB meetings beamed nationwide by SKY Channel. The Club continues to be regarded as the hub of racing in North and West Queensland, with a wide following for its popular TAB race days across the nation. the Townsville Cup three years in succession to the record breaking Cleveland Bay Sprint, a time honoured flying handicap which has created so many North Queensland sprinting superstars Townsville Cup Day has it all. Cairns Jockey Club

ABOUT CAIRNS JOCKEY CLUB2011 marked 100 Years of racing at Cannon Park! The long and colorful history of the Cairns Jockey Club started in the townships Mining Exchange Hotel in July 1884. Over fifty enthusiastic people signed up for membership and the very first race meeting was conducted shortly after. The Cannon family generously donated the land where the club is currently located, with the first race meeting held in 1911. Records show that the celebrated Brothers Cairns Cup was first conducted in the early 1900’s, with only the war years interrupting the continuous running of this event.

In recent times several developments have taken place at Cannon Park. The grandstand was opened 15th July 1972, by the Minister of Racing the Honorable Sir Gordon Chalk KBE. It was shortly after that work was started to an extension which now houses the main public bar, tote office and windows, and the Barrier Reef function room.

Cannon Park has been the home to several smart gallopers who have graduated to becoming stakes place getters and metropolitan winners. These include Queensland Cup winner Regal Punch, and the north Queensland bred trio Strictly Smart, See You Twist and Dirtiere. The far north breeding ground does not stop with the gallopers. John O’Shea, Brian Mayfield-Smith and Jack Wilson spent their formative years honing their skills and talents at Cairns.

Just recently, Racing Minister Steve Dickson announced approval a $1.96-million investment on a vital upgrade project for the Cannon Park precinct. This will see the existing track rebuilt, installation of a grassed access track for ambulances, along with renovation of the current stable facilities.

Each May and June the Gold Coast comes alive with the southern hemisphere’s largest and best breeding stock auction, the Magic Millions National Sale. The sale offers up everything from weanlings and yearlings to broodmares and stallions and a real highlight of the auction is the sale of race fillies and young stakes mares in foal.

The 2013 National Sale, like the years before it, was highlighted by the sale of quality young breeding prospects headlined by Group 1 winner Nechita selling for $1.55 million.

The star lot of a quality packed draft of an unreserved reduction draft from Patinack Farm, Nechita was purchased by Coolmore’s Tom Magnier and she has since been flown to Ireland and her broodmare future looks assured from the point she is serve for the first time.

Other top sellers from the Patinack Farm draft were Group Two winner Longport ($800,000), Group Three winner Sookie ($700,000), Group

Owners And

Trainers Notice

One winner Pear Tart ($675,000) and Group Two winner Pane in the Glass ($500,000).

Queensland based stakes winning mare Paprika, in foal to Sepoy in her first season at stud, was purchased by James Harron Bloodstock for $550,000. Other locally performed mares to sell well included Alberton Park (in foal to Sepoy) for $450,000 and stakes performed maiden mare Saturn Rock for $270,000.

In past years star mares including Princess Coup ($3 million), Divine Madonna ($2.7 million), Star Shiraz ($1.125 million), Personify ($1.025 million), Hurtle Myrtle ($1 million), Sister Madly ($1 million), Strawberry Field ($1 million), Musidora ($1 million), Litter ($860,000), Military Rose ($800,000), Hips Don’t Lie ($770,000), Pinezero ($700,000), Brockman’s Lass ($675,000) have all starred in the sale ring at the National Sale prior to entering the breeding barn.

The National Broodmare Sale is ideally placed during the Brisbane Winter Carnival for filly and mare owners to campaign their horse right up to the sale. The race fillies and mares, having not

been to stud, attract plenty of interest when they are offered at the start of each day’s catalogue.

“Buyers are always on the lookout for quality stakes mares straight off the track or still in work,” Magic Millions managing director Vin Cox stated.

“Each year those stakes performed fillies and mares sell strongly and we look forward to assembling another outstanding selection in 2014.”

The National Sale is one of those rare auctions where owners can sell a mare one week and buy a potential stakes winning yearling the next.

The National Yearling Sale has quickly establish itself as one of the country’s top producing auctions with past graduates including champion international sprinter Rocket Man, Golden Slipper winner Polar Success, Oakleigh Plate winner Woorim, New Zealand and Singapore group winner Tell a Tale and former champion Sydney three-year-old filly Heavenly Glow.

The National Weanling Sale has also quickly become one of the world’s best. It is a proven source of pin-hook and racetrack stars.

The 2010 auction has already produced Group 1 winners Pierro and Southern Lord and Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Driefontein. Anabandana, Chartreux and Swiss Ace are also Group 1 winning graduates.

The newest superstar graduate of the National Weanling Sale is the Queensland bred superstar three-year-old Zoustar – a brilliant multiple Group One winner during the 2013 Spring Carnivals in Sydney and Melbourne.

Whether looking to buy or sell, the Magic Millions National Sale during May and June is an opportunity not to be missed.

Contact the Bloodstock Department of Magic Millions for more information or visit the website www.magicmillions.com.au.
