You may not know it, but theinspiration for Winter Carnivalactually dates back to 1924 whenthe town created the Payette LakesSports Carnival to beat thewinter doldrums. Events includeddog and snowshoe races, skijumping, horse ski-jouring,and a tug-o-war where the prizewas a box of oranges! Inaddition to these events, visitorscould also take an exhilaratingride across the lake ice on a motorsleigh, a standard sleigh outfitted with an airplanemotor for power.

This is a special year for McCall WinterCarnival as we mark the 50th anniversary ofthis massive 10-day event celebrating allthings winter!

Page 6

As guest lodging was limited in the1920s in McCall, the overflow of visi-tors were housed by residents whoopened their homes for the event. Inaddition, a special train with sleepercars attached was positioned at thetrain station and reduced rates wereoffered as another form of accommo-dation for visitors.

The Payette Lakes Sports Carnival last-ed several years, but began to fade outas organized clubs and the developmentof permanent facilities such as the LittleSki Hill made sporting competitionsmore formal and the need for festivalsto hold such competitions were notneeded. The Sports Carnival eventuallyevolved into an “Ice Break-UpContest.” A person could purchase aticket and enter a guess as to what day, hour, and minute the ice on PayetteLake would break up in the spring. Thelast contest was held in 1941 and endedas gambling became illegal.

The first SportsCarnival wasattended byapproximately2,000 people, including thenIdaho GovernorC. Moore.

Page 7

In 1965, the McCallcommunity rallied tobring back a winterfestival to their town, motivated by a desireto promote skiing inthe area.

Brundage Mountain Resort had openeda few years earlier, in 1961, and the firstofficial Winter Carnival was held on thesame weekend as the University ofIdaho Ski Invitational at Brundage.Events included slalom racing, crosscountry skiing, ski jumping, snowshoeraces and snowcat races.

The first Winter Carnival in 1965 was a two-day event that drew regional visitors tothe area. Snow sculptures were an integral part of that first Winter Carnival andthis popular tradition continues today.

The McCall Winter Carnival continues to grow and expand and is the 10-day festi-val we know today. We are excited to welcome you to share the experience and helpus celebrate 50 years!

For 50 years, ice sculptures have beenthe backbone of the Carnival. Eachsculpture is the culmination of thou-sands of hours of work by teams of co-workers, family members and commit-ted volunteers.

The artisticexperience and the camaraderie withfellow artists makes this competition atruly fun and rewarding artistic experi-ence. Location of the event will bedowntown with the lake and BrundageMountain as a back drop.

The Mardi Gras Parade is the largestspectator event at the McCall WinterCarnival.

The parade actually started as the“Grand Parade” in the 1970’s, but overtime, dwindling attendance and a lackof interest from the community to getinvolved threatened to phase out thisevent. Before that could happen, howev-er, Lisa Whisnant and a team of vol-

unteers resurrected the “GrandParade” and initiated the Mardi Grastheme in the 1990’s. Since that time, the parade has continued to grow andthrive and the Mardi Gras theme stuck. It has been the official theme for theparade each and every year.

The Mardi Gras Parade takes place,Saturday, January 31st in downtown.Arrive early for the best viewing!
