    AyearagolastJulyIsatdownneartheseawallwithafewfriendsatFortAdamsandwatchedthefinalsof the2012AmericanCupWorldSeries.Thiswas sortof apreludeorpracticetrialforthelargerboatstoberacedinSanFranciscothefollowingyear.Itwaswonby theAmericans butmarred by the cheating scan-dal.Imarveledatthespeedandtechnologyof thesesmaller45footcatamarans,butwasdisappointedwiththeappearanceof thesemulti-hull“contraptions.”Of coursetheknowledgeof newdesignandtechnologyisimportanttothesailingworld–but,IguessIamatraditionalist.Theyjustdonothavethebeautyof thelarge,single-hull,boatsthatracedovertheprevious132yearsforthe“Auldmug.”Itishardtocomparethemtothegracefullinesof the,seventyfoot,twelvemeterboatsthatracedintheAmerica’sCupfinalsatNewportninetimesbetween1958and1983.The exciting 2013America’sCupRace is nowoverandtheoldesttrophyininternationalsportsisinthehands of American, and the sometimesNewportresident,LarryEllison.TheAmericanboatOraclethatwasbehindeightracestooneisconsideredthebiggestcomebackwininanysport.Thankscangoinparttoour local FifthWard, sail trimmer-crewman,RomeKirby.Thisserieswasthelongest,fastest,andbyfar,thewildestAmerica’sCupever.Thespeedof theseboatsallowsthemtohavemorethanoneraceadayinfrontof shorespectators,butthebig72footcatamaransareexpensive, hard to sail, dangerous, and require hugeshorecrewstolaunchandretrieve.Of theelevenmenthatsailedonOracle,onlyKirbywasanAmericanand

    seventypercentof theboatwasbuiltinNewZealand.(America’sCuprulesrequirethehullsbebuilt intheteam’scountryof origin.)Ican’treallyseewhywesaywewonthecupwiththisforeigncrewandwhenmostof theboatwasbuiltanddesignedinourcompetitor’scountry.Of allthemanyAmerica’sCupracesIhavewatched,the1962seriesismyfavorite.ThatwastheyearBusMosbacher,skipperof Weatherly,waschallengedbyasyndicatefromAustralia.TheirboatwasnamedGretelwith JockSturrock as skipper. Iwas determined towatch it,butneededaboattogotheninemilesoff shore to follow the races. Aweekbefore the seriesbegan,Ireceivedaphonecallfromacommercialairlinepilotfriendwhoowneda34footsailboatinMarblehead.HeaskedmetosaildowntoNewportfortheraceswithhim.Iimmediatelyaccepted.WeleftMarbleheadharborearlyinthemorningwithanall-malecrewof four.Iwassurprisedthattheairlinepilotownerhadnolifejacketsonboard,onlyahalf tankof gas,andnonavigationdevicesorcharts,butplentyof beer.(Iwonderedif Iwouldeverwanttoflywithhim.)WedidfindaGulf Gasolineroadmapthatshowedusthemanyislandstoavoid.WewereluckythatanortherlybreezeandafavorablecurrentcarriedusthroughtheCapeCodCanal.Attheendof thecanalwestoppedatthelittletownof Onsettorefuel.Newportharborwasmorecrowdedthanusualasmanyboats had arrived for theCup races. Wedidfind aplacetoanchorandcelebratedourarrival.Aswewereveryhungry,itwasdecidedtoeatearly.Afirewaslit

    onthecharcoalgrillethatwashungoverthesternandalargebeef steakfromtheicechestwasplacedonit.Almostimmediatelyaseagullswoopeddown,snatchedthesteak,andflewawaywithit.Thiscausedariotonboardandweblamedthecrewmanwhowasdoingthecooking.Weputhiminthedingyandtoldhimtonotreturnuntilhehadreplacedthesteak.Itdidtakeseveralhoursanditwasdark,buthedidreturnwithaneventhickerslabof rawmeat.Afterdinner,Isawourmaligned“chef ”carefullywrapthestillhotcoalsinthetinfoilthatlinedthebottomof thegrilleandthrowitoverboard.Earlynextmorningwewereawakenedbysomeonepoundingonourhullwithanoar.Itwasanangryyachtsmanwhotoldustolookathisbeautifulwhite-hulledyachtthatwasmoorednearby.Therewasablacksmudgemarkonthesideof hisboat.Obviouslythehotcharcoalsdidnotsinktothebottom,butfloatedovertohim.

    ***Newportwasabeehiveof activity.TheAussiescrewandtheirfollowershadtakenoverZelda’sRestaurantonThamesStreetastheirfavoritehangout.TherewasnodoubttheAustralianswereagreathitasthelocalswerenowcalling eachother “mate.” Several restau-rantshadstockedSwanbeerandkangaroostewfortheAustralians,buttheAussieswereeatingAmericansteakanddrinkingAmericanbeer,aswerethecrewsof theAmericanboats. Addedtotheexcitement,PresidentKennedyandhiswifeJackiewerecomingtoNewporttowatchtheracesaboardthedestroyerJoseph P. Ken-nedy-namedafterhisolderbrotherwhowaskilledinWWII.Ourcrewdecidedwehadtomakesomekindof “wel-comeback toNewport” statement for thePresidentandhiswife. Iwas fortunate tohavemethim inhisofficeinWashingtonnineyearsearlierwithtenothercollegeclassmatesandoureconomicsprofessor.HewasanewU.S.SenatorfromMassachusettsandwasdatingJacquelineBouvier fromNewportwhomhemarriedinStMary’sChurchlaterintheyear.Onceweheard,however,thattheywouldbesurroundedbyaroundof parties andpress,wedecided itwas theAussies thatneededthewelcome.Theywerethefirstcountrysouthof theequatortocompetefortheCupandtheycame

    half wayaroundtheworldtogethere.Theywerecertain-lytheunderdogagainstthemightyunbeatenAmericans.

    Wegaveourwivesthesmallworkingjibfromtheboatandtheywenttoworkinmycellar.Withblacktapetheyattachedtothesailthemessage:“GoodLuckSirFrank.”SirFrankPackerwasthewealthyAustralianwhoformedthesyndicatethatbuiltandbroughtGretel(namedafterhisdeceasedwife)toNewport.WewouldwelcometheAussies,butrootfortheAmericans.

    Therewere tenof usonboard thatpoweredout towatchthefirstrace.Oncewejoinedthecrowdedspecta-torfleet,thesignaturejibwasproudlyhoisted,butthedaydidnotstartoff well.Thewakesfromthemanyboatsandspectatorshipsfollowingthe12metersmadeourboatpitchandrollviolently.Oneof ourguestsfeltsickandretreatedtothecabin.Itoldhimthatwastheworseplacetobeandtocomeupandgetsomefreshair.Hepoppedhisheadoutof thehatchwithhissix-hundreddollarbinocularsinhishand.Asuddenlurchof theboatandtheglassesfelloutof hisgrip,bouncedoff thedeckandwentoverboard.Weatherly won the first day, butGretelwas definitelyfaster on her downwind sailing andbecause of thisshewonthesecondrace.Theexcitementwasnowatafeverpitch.ItbecameaverytightseriesandGretelalmostwonanotherrace,butmadesomemajortacti-calmistakes allowing theAmericans towin thefinalthreeraces. AstheAustraliansclearlyhadthebetterboat,theAmericanschangedtherulessothatallfuturechallengerswerebarredfromAmericandesignorbuilttechnology – but, it appearswe can use theirs.TheAussiesobviouslyimprovedtheirsailing,andwiththeirnewhulldesignwereable totaketheAmerica’sCupawayfromthecountryandNewporttwenty-oneyearslater.

    Afteraboutaweek,IstartedtoreceivephonecallsthatmypicturewasinSports Illustrated.Iaskedthem,tongueincheek,forwhichof mysports,knowingIhadtorunoutandbuymanyissuesof themagazine.Thecaptionabovethepicturereads:“Tinypro-AustralianmovesinboldlyonDestroyercarryingpresident.”

    Question:Whoorwhatisamustang?Answer:Anon-commissionedmilitarypersonwhobe-causeof outstandingability,intelligenceandleadershipqualities,andofteninsituationsof militarycombat,isselectedbyhis/herpeersforpromotiontoacommis-sionedofficerinhis/herbranchof theservice.SuchamanisBruceLivingston,aresidentof James-townandfaithfulattendeeattheNavalWarCollege8BellsLectureSeries.ThisiswhereImethimandlearnedabouthismilitarylifestorywhichfollows.BrucewasinjuniorhighschoolinNewJerseywhentheJapaneseattackedPearlHarboronDecember7,1941.In1944hewasa17-yearoldhighschoolseniorwhenhereceivedhisparents’permissiontoenlistintheU.S.MarineCorps.After advanced infantry training at CampLejeune,NorthCarolina,andfurthertrainingatCampPendleton,California,heandhisunitweresenttotheislandof GuamintheNorthPacifictopreparefortheanticipatedinvasionof theJapanesehomelandafterthreeyearsof devastatingAmericandefeatsandvictories.Whenfateintervenedin1945with2atomicbombsdevastatingthecitiesof HiroshimaandNagasaki,bringingabouttheunconditionalJapanesesurrender,Bruceandhiswell-trainedplatoonof combatreadyMarinesweresentto

    theChinesemainlandinstead.BrucewaspromotedtoCorporalandheandhisunitwereinstructedtohelpintherepatriationof thedefeatedJapanesesoldiersbacktotheirislandhomeontransportships.Moreurgently,theywereentrustedwithprovidingsecurityforanarrowgaugerailroadthatwastransportingvitalsuppliesof coalfromthecoalmineslocatedsome60milesfromtheChinesecapitalinPeking.FromthedistributioncenterinPeking,thecoalwouldbedispersedtothevastsur-roundingareaof China.ChinawasatthetimeinvolvedinacivilwarbetweentheChineseCommunistsunderMaoTse-Tung and theChineseNationalists underChiangKai-Shek.BruceandhisMarineswerechargedwithkeepingthesupply linesopenandthis included“ridingshotgun”ontherailroadfrom1945to1947.In1947,BrucereturnedtotheUnitedStatesforfur-ther security training and a promotion to Sergeantfollowed.HethenbecameamarksmanshipinstructoratParisIslandandtheNavalAcademyatAnnapolis.InDecember,1948,heresignedfromactivedutyandjoinedtheMarineReserves.Hetookadvantageof theGIBill to get his high school diploma from a prepschoolintheAnnapolisareaandsubsequentlyenrolledinanengineeringprogramatJohnsHopkinsUniversity.However,fateintervenedagainandhewascalledbacktoactivedutyin1950becauseof theKoreanWar.HewaspromotedtoStaff Sergeantandthiswasfollowedbyhisnextstepuptheladderto2ndLieutenantin1951.HebecametheExecutiveOfficerof the3rdBattalion,7thMarineDivisionandsawcombatwiththemontheKoreanPeninsula.In1952,BrucereturnedtotheU.S.asCommandantof MarinesattheNavyBureauof PersonnelinArlington,Va.During this timehewas appointed a 1st Lt. and

    shortly thereafterCaptainproceeding further up therungsof theladder.In1954,BrucetooktotheseaasCommandingOfficerof MarinesandlegalofficeronaheavycruiserwhichhaditshomeportintheMediter-raneanSea.Returning to theU.S. in 1956, Brucewas assignedtoCampPendletonas infantry andartilleryofficer.ThiswasfollowedbyatriptotheNavalWarCollegeinNewportforfurtherspecializedtraining.HetookanotherstepuptheladderwithapromotiontoMajor.Hisnextpostingin1966wasasExecutiveOfficerof CombatOperationsinVietnamwherehewouldoftentravelbyhelicoptertoinspectvariouscombatsites.AnadditionalstepuptheladderwasapromotiontoLt.ColonelduringhisVietnamtour.AfterayearinViet-nam,Brucewassenthalf wayaroundtheworldtoOslo,Norway.Hewas instructed to setupa coldweathertrainingcommandforNATO.Forthenext3years,hetravelledthroughoutthevariousNATOcountriesoninspectiontours.HemanagedtoestablishahomeinOslowherehisfamilywasabletojoinhim.

    Onconclusionof thistourof duty,BrucereturnedtoNewporttoenrollinaseniorprogramattheNavalWarCollegeincludingaMasterof Scienceprogram.Afterreceiving his diploma from theWarCollege,BrucemountedtheladderonceagaintobecomeaColonel.HecompletedaForeignOfficer’scourseandwasgivencommandof theNinthMarineRegimentonOkinawafrom1973to1974.His final postingwas back inWashington,D.C., asDeputyDirector of Training andEducation for theU.S.MarineCorps.HealsowasresponsibleforsettinguptheMarineCorps’PhotographicCenter.In1974,BruceretiredfromtheU.S.MarineCorpsoncompletionof 30yearsof service.HeboughtahomeinPortsmouthandwasenjoyinghis retirementoncemorewhenhechancedtomeetaSwedishmanwithwhomhehadbeen associated inNorway.ThismanwasinNewporthopingtomakearrangementstobuilda30-footsailingyacht.HewasthefrontmanforanoverseasorganizationthatthoughtNewportwouldbetheideallocationforanauticalbusiness.ItturnedoutthattheorganizationneededalocalconnectionfamiliarwiththeterritoryandBrucefitthebilltoaT.TheboatingbusinessbecameBruce’scareerinretire-mentandheandhisson,agraduateof JohnsHopkinsUniversity, formed LivingstonMarine Associates.Amongtheirearlyaccomplishmentswastheconstruc-tionof thehullof thereplicaof thesloopProvidence.As theirbusinessexpanded, theyboughtandmovedtoaboatyardinJamestown.Brucecontinuedtobeanactivepartneruntilrecentlywhenhesemi-retiredanddownsizedtosurveyingandboatinspectionconsulta-tions.Brucehasneverlosthisloveof theMarineCorps.HeisCommander of theVeterans of ForeignWars inJamestownandisactiveinprojectsforJamestownseniorcitizens.Hestillkeepsincontactwithseveralof hisoldMarinebuddiesand,asIstatedatthebeginningof thisarticle,isafaithfulattendeeattheNavalWarCollege8BellsLectureSerieswherehekeepseveryoneontheirtoeswithhiskeenknowledgeandsenseof navalhistory.WhoelsedoyouknowwhoservedonactivedutyinWorldWarII,theKoreanandtheVietnameseWars?Seeyouatthenext8BellsLectureSeries!

    In1942theChristmasCarollingonthePointwasiniti-atedbyKingandRobertCovell,bothof whomwereseriousmusicians.Theygatheredagroupof peoplewholovedtosing,mostof whomwerePointers.Of course,therehadbeenothercarollersintheCity,visitingtheNewportandtheNavalHospitals.Thebestremem-beredwastheSwanhurstChorusunderthedirectionof CarollBall,buttheysangonlythemelodicline,whilewedidthefourparts.AvigorouspracticesessionwasheldafewdaysbeforeChristmas,withRobertconducting.Tworecorderplayers,NancyPriceCareyandJ.H.Benson,wereof greathelpinkeepingusonthepitchwhenwewereoutinthecoldonChristmasEve.Robertnotonlyinsistedthatwehaveournotescorrectlybutalsothatwesangloudorsoft,asthecaroldemanded.Bestof allhetaughtustwoorthreenewcarolseachyearwhichfilledoutourrepertoiregreatly.Thesongbookswerethickenedbytheinsertionandpastinginof thesenewsongs,makingthemquitedifficulttoholdwithmittenedorglovedhands.Attheconclusionof thisvaluablerehearsal,ourthroatsweresoothedbyVirginia’sdeliciouscinnamoncocoa.Howdifferentwastheactualnight!Of courseitwasrainy,orsnowy,andbothwindyandcold.Bundledupinheaviestcoats,scarves,mittens,andboots,wemetattheCovellsandsetforth.Lanternsandflashlights,aswellassongbooks,encumberedus.Generallywewalkeddirectly northonWashington Street, yet ourschedulewas not rigid. I remember our visit to theEcclesHousecomingaboutmid-waywhenwewerequitefrozen.Thesweepof thenorthorsouthwindreallyhitsthere,acrossfromBatteryPark.Cominginfromthecold,afterourstopattheBethunes,weweregrateful for theblazinghearth, thearomaof mulledclaretandthelusciouscookieswhichgreetedusattheEccles.Butwecouldnotlingerlonginthisalltoorelax-ingatmosphere,havingsomuchsingingstillahead.AtStellaMariswherewewentinside,onlythesisterswerevisiblebutalldoorsabovewereopensothatthepatientscouldhear.TheTuckermans,newcomers toourcity,wereespeciallypleasedtobeincludedinourendeavor.In theHomefor theAged,nowtheNinaLynetteHome,everyoccupant,wreathedinsmilescame

    downstairstolisten.Weoftengavethemathirdcarol.On several occasions SuzanneAubois’ parentswerewithherat86Washington.Acrossthestreetwesangat theWatsons, thentoPopandMomBozyan’sandtheMacLeods.Itissatisfyingnowtorealizethatfrommanyof thosehousescameasecondorthirdgenerationwhosangwithus.(Bethune,Bozyan,Aubois,Whalon,MacLeod,CovellandHaylor).PaulineWeaver,atthecornerof WillowandSecond,ledusinsothatEvelynBendict,bed-riddenupstairs,couldhearus.TheRev.andMrs.HaylorwereatSt.John’srectoryandwesangthere.WethenwenttoHaroldandPhillipineArnold’swhere the narrowpassageway to Susan andHaroldjunior’shouseconcentratedournowweakeningtones.IntheearliestyearswemadestopsattheCrandallsandMissAgnesStorer’s,shebeinganotherillperson.Actu-allyourschedulewasnotexactlythesameeachyear,norwasthegroupof singers.Anucleuseveryyeargaveuscontinuity.SomepeoplejustlikedtosingatChristmassotheycamealong.OftentherewasanillpersononthePointandwewentthere.Wecontinuedforabout25yearsbutlostmanypeople–thosewhosangandthosewhoweresungto.ButlifeandChristmaschanged,becomingfranticallybusy,withnotimeforsuchhomelyexpressionsasoursinging.Lookingback, it seems tome that allof ussharedaneedtogivesomethingof ourselvesatChrist-mas,notapersonalgiftbutonetoeverybodywhichthePointrepresented–andwedidlovetosing!

    BillenjoysdonatinghistimeasaskilledvolunteerforServeRI,andhasdonemuchprojectworkfornon-profitsinbothRIandMA.Previously,too,BillheldthetreasurerpositionforhisneighborhoodassociationwhenhelivedinOhio.OnemightoftenseeBillatourlocalYwhereheworksout daily, or, see himwalking for exercise betweenthePointneighborhoodandtheIdaLewisYachtingCenter.Bill ismarried to Joan, our corresponding secretary,

    andistheproudfatherof adaughter,ason,andthreegrandchildren.RONBARRBorninIndiaandeducatedinAustraliaandEngland,RonfirstdiscoveredNewportwhilesittinginaLondonpubinthe1950swatchingamoviecalled“JazzonaSummersDay”andthentotallyforgotaboutit!HearrivedintheUSAintheearly60sandstartedanarchitectural concrete design company in the north-east.HesoldthistoworkatanOutwardBoundSeaSchoolandthenwentsailing,livingaboardfor7yearsandcombiningthatwithanadventuretravelbusinessworkingonsea relatedprojectswithURISchoolof Oceanography,Earthwatch,PlanetOcean,theHamp-tonMarinersMuseumandothers.

    In1979,hefinallyrediscoveredNewportanddecidedtosettleheretoopenamarinebookstorecalledTheArmchairSailorwhichhe ran for20yearswhile liv-ingintheFifthWard.Duringthattimehestartedthe“LowerThamesNeighborhoodAssociation”with a

  • smallgroupof otherbusinessesand“TheWaterfrontWatch”tocombatcrimeonthewater.HealsoservedontheCityWaterfrontCommissionandTheSeaman’sInstituteboard.Heiscurrentlyactiveontheboardof TheEnglishSpeakingUnionandinvolvedwithDiscus-sionGroupsandQuindecimattheNavybase.

    He andhiswifeNancy have lived in thePoint areaonThirdStreetand thensomesixyearsagoboughttheir homeonBridge Street.There they verymuchenjoygardening,ThePointAssociation’sactivities,St.Columba’schapel,whereNancysingsinthechoirandtravelextensivelyfor3to4monthsayear.TheybothvolunteeratNewportHospital.

    NANCYSCOTTNancyisanativeNewEnglander,borninVT,broughtup inMaine, andhas lived inRI since1984. AftergraduatingfromWheatonCollege,shebeganherloveof travelasaflightattendantforPanAm—thosewerethegoodol’dayswhenairtravelwasfun!Shealsoworkedasasalesrepfortwomajorairlines.Sheretiredin2008aftermorethan20yearsintherealestateindustry,firstasabrokerandforthelasttenyearsas the relocationdirector inRI forColdwellBanker.ShewasresponsibleforhelpingtorelocateexecutivesandtheirfamiliestoRIfromallovertheworld.Inthatcapacity,shewasacheerleaderandone-womanChamberof Commercepromotingallthat’sspecialaboutlivinginRhodeIsland.

    Currently, she serves on theBoardof theNewportHospitalAuxiliaryandmanagestheHospitalGiftShop.(Stop in and shop; theyhaveawidevarietyof greatgiftsandallproceedsaredonateddirectlybacktothehospital.)SheservesontheOutreachCommitteeandsingsinthechoiratherchurch.

    SheismarriedtoRonBarrwhobroughthertoNewport,andtogethertheyenjoygardeningandtravel.

    TheAnnualFallMembershipMeetingwasheldonThurs-dayevening,October17th,inSt.John’sHall.BethCullen,PointAssociationpresident,openedthemeetingbygreet-ingthenearly50guestsandthankedthemembershipfortheirlargeturnout.ShethenthankedandintroducedFr.Humphrey,thenewvicarof StJohn’s,whoalsowelcomedtheaudienceandstatedhisintentiontomakeStJohn’s“theneighborhoodchurchinthePoint.”P.A.businesswasthenaddressed.TomGoldrick,outgoingtreasurer,submittedareportwhichwasaccepted.Beththenspokeaboutsomefutureeventsof theAllianceforaLivableNewport,notingthatIsabelGriffithwouldbereportingtotheP.A.boardonALNactivitiesduringtheensuingyear.Bethremindedthemembershipof thefallcleanupscheduledforSaturday,Oct.26th.TheDanafamilywasthenthankedandapplaudedfortheircontributiontorestoringthelandscapeafterrecentPointflooding.Opportunitiesforobtainingtreesanddaffodilsforplantingwerethenexplained,andtheP.A.’sfutureroleinfinancingareplacementwaterfountaininBat-teryParkwasdiscussed.JeanHuntleyandLaurenDanawerethenintroducedastheneweventsteam.Futureeventswereoutlined,includingplansforHalloweenandChristmas,andtwolectures.Hillar Serapera addressedchangesintheAssociation’sby-laws and invited com-ments andquestions.Thenewe-editionof theGreen Light was discussed. LisaStuartandLisaBrewwereintroducedasthenewlead-ersof theHistoryandArchivesCommittee.Theybroughttheaudienceuptodateontheirrecentworkandfutureplans

    andneeds.Theyalsobrought with themsome P.A. publica-tions,which theyof-feredforsale.LaurenShawprovided somebackground on localinfrastructure proj-ects,includingthefu-tureof theVanZandt

    bridgeandtheMarshandBridgestreetarea,wherefloodingisaperennialproblem.Thesetopicselicitedmuchdiscus-sion.Finally,thecurrentPointAssociationmembershipwasnotedat458.JohnWardthenspokeasleaderof theNominatingCommit-tee.Hepresentedtherosterof nomineestothemembers.BethCullen readbrief biographical sketches of the newofficers shortlybefore theirnameswerepresented to themembershipforavote.Allwereapproved.Thenewappoint-mentswere:TomHockaday,vicepresident,BillRauch,trea-surer,andNancyScottandRonBarr,recordingsecretaries.Twoguestspeakersfilledtheremainderof themeeting.Pe-terMartin,ourrepresentativeintheStateAssembly,spokeabouthissixyearsonthejobandhisexperienceswiththeOldColonyrailroad.Hethenaddressedhisconcernsaboutthe presentPoint railroad crossings andplans for a newpedestriancrossingonAmericasCupAvenueinNewport.After a shortbreak for refreshments,CouncilmanMarcoCamachoaddressedtheaudienceonawiderangeof issues,some of which provoked a great deal of comment andenquiry.Topicsaddressed included redevelopmentof thenorthend,thenewPellelementaryschool,floodinsurance,theGoatIslandmarinaproposal,masstransit,andNationalGrid’s utilitywork. In afinal plea from theCouncilman,themembershipwas encouraged to volunteer for severalmunicipalcommittees,whosefindingsmightbeimportantforNewport’s future.Hementioned theCharterReviewCommission, theFinancialReviewCommission, and theHomesteadExemptionGroup.

Icouldn’tunderstandthemelody,butIwastrulymesmerized!ThefoghornsatthePointwerefamiliarsounds.Istillheartheecho.Someonetoldmetheynolongerbellow.Iwonderwhy.WhenIvisitNewportnow,echoesring,e.g.schoolmornings,myfriendCarole,callingmynameoutsidethehouse;theschoolbellsforCalendar,PotterandMumford;theflagpoles,theassemblies,thePledgeof Allegiance.IremembertheBlueRocks,theperiwinkles,VanZandtPier,thelighthouseandthelingeringsunsetsoverthebay.Therewereplentyof horsechestnutsinautumn.Icollected them;and liked theway they lookedandsmelledaftercrackingtheshells–shinyballsof pol-ishedfurniture!Thanksgiving,Christmasdinners,thesmellof pinecones,pumpkinandsquashpies.OneChristmasIgotaSparklePlentydollinthestockingfilledwithnuts,appleandorange.Ribboncandywas

    special!Iseemyself trudgingthroughthesnow,feelingwarminmyredvelvethoodsurroundedwithwhitefurandasnugredbowsuspendedbytwowhitefurballsundermychin.IleftthePointwhenIwas14yearsold–movedtoNewYorktolivewithmyfather,butIcherishtheeducation(bothreligiousandsecular)thatIreceivedintheforma-tiveyears.     Coming as aRotary exchange student from a smallvillageinsouthernGermany,IfindthatNewportandthePointareverydifferentfrommyhome.Oneof thebiggest,andtomemostsurprising,isthedifferenceintheroofs.InGermany–andotherEuropeancountries–everysingleroof ismadeoutof redtiles.ThatwassonormaltomethatIneverreallythoughtaboutitbeingdifferentintheUSA.Notseeinganyredroofswasverystrangeforthefirstweek.IhavecometoappreciateallthedifferentstylesandroofingmaterialsusedhereinNewport.Thissmallbutstrikingcontrasthasopenedmyeyestothemanyotherdistinctions.InGermany,wealsodon’treallyhaveneighborhoodassociations.Justseeing“normal”peopleachievebetterconditionsfortheirneighborhoodwasprettyinterest-ing.MyhostparentsareBethandMikeCullen,whoareveryactiveinlifehere.IamlearningalotabouttheAmericanwayof gettingthingsdone.Inschool,IamtakingUSHistoryandalotof theeventswe’retalkingaboutactuallytookplaceinNewportandevenrighthereinthePointneighborhood.ItfeelslikeIamwalkinginalivinghistorymuseum.Therestillarealotof verynice,oldhousesfromcolonialtimesthatmakewhatIamlearningatRogersHighSchoolcometolife.ThePoint,tome,islocatedinabeautifulandverycleanarea,withagreatviewonthesea.Ilikeallthegreenspaceandniceparks.TheonlythingIdon’tlikeabout

    thePointandNewportingeneralaretheroads.Allthesmallfixesandpatchesdonesomanytimesinsomanylittlepiecesalwaysgiveyouagoodshakingeverytimeyoudriveanywhere,especiallyontheschoolbus!

    Nevertheless,thePointisawonderfulplacetolivein,andI’vemetmanynicepeople.IamgladthatIcanspendthefirstpartof myexchangeyearhere.
