ur second issue is inspired by so many fabulous

festive opportunities that fall and winter bring. Fall provides abundant farm-to-table meals, sun-kissed vineyards that serve as beautiful backdrops for a wine country wedding and a slew of new harvest wines being harvested. Winter brings opportunities to cozy up and create handmade gifts, along with the expectation of a spectacular new year where love can be commemorated exactly at midnight. In this issue, inspired by the seasons, we put together handmade crafted DIY Food Favors (Page 30) with our DIY

contributor Alex May. These lovely ideas give foodies unique recipes and packaging ideas that make for yummy food favors. Working with Off the Beaten Path Weddings, we coordinated a styled Country Chic Wedding (Page 76). Inspired by harvest we shot this feature on a Napa farm with a rustic barn and used my favorite fruit, white peaches, as inspiration. Gianna Gaudini, our resident Sommelier researched Signature Wine Cocktails (Page 60) by visiting some of our favorite watering holes. We are certain wine-loving couples will want to serve these libations at their wine country wedding. Finally, New Years Eve Fashion (Page 44) inspired our take on a jovial approach to reception dresses and wedding gowns that were suitable for an I do at midnight. Lastly, Id like to thank all our readers, sponsors and contributors for their support. Our premiereissue met our wildest dreams. Again, our goal is to ensure that each issue is better than the last. Also, dont miss out on our blog, where more inspiration, resources and planning advice resides everyday.

Wineries may require a wine purchase minimum. Look at this allocation in a joyful light, wine can be used in multiple ways. Wine may be distributed to guests as arrival gifts in hotel rooms, customized wedding favors and thank you gifts. Serve it at the rehearsal dinner or during a post-wedding brunch. There are endless possibilities. Ask the winery to save wine corks for DIY place cards.

Besides the initial saving on the site fee, this may open the door to additional savings. You can always find discounts and better selection of vendors and venues when you are not competing with multiple weddings occurring the same day. Off-season is always slower and business owners are willing to negotiate pricing.

Although this may seem like an additional line item to your overall budget, a professional planner will help you save in the long run. Occasionally planners receive discounts that they are able to pass onto you. Planners are budget savvy and cognoscente of where to cut corners without impacting the overall look and feel of your perfect day.

Discover what your venue resources are. In some cases the venue will allow you to use existing furniture. Keep an open mind and be creative. A wooden dining room table can be a guest book or gift table. If you happen to be getting married at a winery inquire about utilizing wine barrels as cocktail tables.

Centerpieces can be costly especially if you have multiple tables you are embellishing. Repurpose floral arrangements from the wedding rehearsal. Mix and match or use the rehearsal arrangements for your cocktail hour. Another great idea is repurposing the bridesmaids bouquets as centerpieces. This has been beautifully pulled off by placing full bridal bouquets in low vases and putting candelabras on adjacent tables. Consider other items that are recyclable.

There are various elements of a wedding that you can create yourself. Printable save the date or wedding invites are very affordable online if you print yourself. You can also craft decorative garland, name cards or guest books yourself. Etsy has provides a slew of talented artisans who can provide a artisan handmade touch for a very affordable price and you can work with your planner to do the rest yourself.

    Allocate your wine.

    Identify the off season.

    Hire a planner.

    Save on your rentals.

    Recycle.

Calligraphy is the art of writing. Developed by the Ital-

ians in the 1770s, the tradition still consists of using a

fountain pen or paint brush and ink to stylishly

express words in a beautiful fashion. J. Panter, a

Wedding Calligrapher based in Napa Valley, welcomed

us into her studio. Reminiscent of an era of elegance,

J.P explains that her work as an artistic calligrapher is

always to produce art. Her wedding work consistent,

mainly, of invitation envelopes, escort cards,

devotionals, poems, vows and various wedding

signage. Her talent is creating a variety of script styles

that range from classic, elegant looks to vintage or

    modern lettering.

J.P. has worked on twenty-four weddings in the last five

months alone. These numbers underscore the growing

trend for handmade and handcrafted pieces that couples

want at their wedding. From viewing her wedding

collection of past work its easy to see how the desire for

distinctly unique pieces that match a couples personality

can be found working with a talented calligrapher

    like herself.

D.I.Y. STYLEDWedding Food FavorsAs more and more couples embrace the wave of DIY weddings, were seeing a fierce individuality that differentiates each celebration. Todays wedding is less about by-the-book trends and tradition, and more about one specific love, interpreted and highlighted into a festive gathering that brings together friends, family and loved ones as the bride and groom embark on their newest chapter of their love story as man and wife.

There is something special about involving the guests and giving them a little piece of the couple to take home with them. Wedding favors serve as tokens of gratitude for their love and suppor t for their guests and can reflect a personal style, wedding theme or relationship. While there are count-less favor sources and ideas, there is something hear tfelt and truly remarkable about a gift that was created with the couples own two hands, and that nourishes the recipient. Here we have five make-it-yourself food favors that you can create together and serve to your nearest and dearest after your nuptials.

    Step One Step FOUR

3 1/2 pounds Granny Smith apples6 1/2 cups water (plus 8oz for tea preparation)

4 cups sugar2 tablespoons lemon juice

3 1/2 tablespoons Earl Grey tea

1.Wash and quarter the whole apples. Do not peel or core. 2. In a heavy pot, cover with 6 1/2 cups water, and simmer 1/2 hour on low heat until the apples are soft and pulpy. Strain the mixture

through a boiled jelly bag. As an alternative you can take layers of cheesecloth doused in boiling water and wrung out. This process of straining will take several hours. Refrain from pressing or

squeezing which will cloud the juice. Strain the juice a second time using the above method, pour into a bowl and refrigerate overnight. 3. Measure 4 1/2 cups of the juice into the pot, scooping

the juice from the top of the bowl to avoid any sediment at the bottom. Add the sugar and lemon juice to the pot and gently heat the mixture to dissolve the sugar. Prepare your tea by adding 8

ounces boiling water to the tea and letting it steep for 3 minutes. Before adding the tea to the pot, bring the mixture to a boil and cook it nearly to the jelling point. Add the tea and return the mix-

ture to a boil. Boil to the jelling point (220F) and remove from heat. 4. Ladle the hot jelly into your sterilized jars and process in a water bath canner. (Yields 4 half-pints)

    Limoncello

    Directions

    Step One Step Two

    10-12 large lemons1 (750-ml) bottle vodka

    2 1/2 cups sugar3 1/2 cups water

    1. Begin by removing the peel from the lemons with a vegetable or potato peeler in long strips. Trim away any remaining white pith from the lemon peels with a small, sharp knife and discard. 2. When all the lemons have been peeled, place the lemon peels in a 2-quart pitcher. Pour all

the vodka over the peels and cover with plastic wrap. Continue to steep the lemon peels in the vodka for 4 days at room temperature. 3. After the four days, it is time to create the simple syrup mixture and finish your liquor. In a large saucepan, stir the water and sugar over medium heat until the sugar dissolves (about 4-5 minutes.) Let cool completely. Pour the sugar syrup over the vodka mixture and cover. Let stand at room temperature overnight. Use a strainer to strain your limon-cello, and discard the remaining peels. 4. Transfer the limoncello to bottles and seal. Add labels as

decor. (Note: Remind guests to chill their limoncello for 4 hours until cold before enjoying.) (Yields 7 cups.)

  • Serving a signature wine-based cocktail at your wedding can add a hint of panache and personality while also being budget-friendly by eliminating a full bar. Have your service staff tray-pass the cocktails at the reception to manage the inevitable crowd at the bar and cre-ate a festive cocktail that matches the theme of your wedding. Or consider serving a specialty cocktail during the cake cutting as a more edgy alternative to an espresso bar. To uncover some of the coolest wine-based cocktails, I interviewed top sommeliers and wine exper ts from San Francisco and Napa Valley, on their all-time favorite recipes and how to best serve them. But dont just take their word for it; try these out or use them as inspiration to create your own custom signature wine-based cocktail.

place in my heart as it was recommended by sommelier Erik of Thomas Kellers restaurant, Bouchon where I got engaged. I also enjoyed this classic many times on my honeymoon; there is just

can handle wedding cake and creates another great opportunity for a toast.

  • Next to the Bloody Mary, the mimosa is the most famed daytime cocktail, but more elegant and better suited for festive occasions. For an inventive alternative, try this sophisticated twist on the standard mimo-sa. The addition of tangy hibiscus flowers and sultry St. Germain main-tain the delicate, fruity nature of a mimosa and the beautiful hibiscus flower adds an exotic flair. I first served this beautiful rose-hued drink at a wedding shower, but it would be just as well-suited for a wedding

This drink will warm you up from its rye base and spicy mulled wine and is best served as a festive addition to dessert. Ideally, this wine-based cocktail is best suited for a winter wedding, and I can imagine it being served to welcome guests as they sit near a fireplace warming up awaiting the ceremony. • S ybil and Daniel had been living in San Francisco for several years when they met at a local bar while watching the University of North Carolinas Tar Heels basketball game, a team the two were fond of as both Daniel and many of Sybils friends attended UNC. After being brought together by mutual friends, the two began spending a lot of time together. We knew shortly that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together, said the happy couple. After a year of dating, Sybil and Daniel vacationed at the Carneros Inn in Napa Valley, a nice escape from the rainy city of San Francisco. The couple described the Inn as absolutely beautiful. Set in the Carneros wine growing region in Napa Valley, Daniel completely surprised me with a gorgeous ring and proposal, Sybil smiled. Since Daniel was originally from North Carolina and Sybil from Texas, they knew their guests would be required to travel to their wedding no matter where the venue was. Thus, the couple decided to host their wedding at Carneros Inn. It is such an amazing property and it was already so special to us, they explained. So, an October wedding in wonderful Napa Valley, it was. We chose fall colors, chocolate brown and persimmon orange, and threw in my favorite color: purple, Sybil described. The chocolate brown was present in details from the guests chairs at the ceremony to the stripes on the wedding cake. While the deep purple was tactfully placed on accent areas such as the brides Mui Mui wedding shoes and her bouquet, which elegantly contrasted her pure white gown.

Since the venue is already so gorgeous, the couple intoned, we wanted to highlight that with simple yet stunning flowers and details, the couple laughed. Sybils favorite part of the wedding, however, was the ceremony. We each wrote our own vows and Daniels were so sweet, said Sybil. He clearly put a lot of thought into them. Daniels favorite part, not too far from Sybils, of course, was watching Sybil walk down the aisle. She was the most beautiful bride I had ever seen, Daniel said. Wine Country Weddings Magazine loves that the couple stayed true to the season by picking warm colors and floral arrangements undeniably present during the month of October. This highlights the venue, the season and the mood that the weather already provides. We also absolutely love the menu, which grasped the cool, October atmosphere. Carneros Inn served a delicious dinner and excellent local wines, the bride and groom contentedly described. The guests started with a salad made with beets, berries and blue cheese, accompanied by a 2009 CADE Sauvignon Blanc. Then came the gnocchi dressed in English peas, mint and cashews served with a 2008 MacRostie Chardonnay. Lastly, a chicken breast fixed with cippolini onions, potatoes and arugula complemented by a 2008 Plumpjack Sauvignon. There is no doubt that a wine country wedding provides the opportunity to feature an exceptional menu that highlights wine and food pairing, in addition to seasonal dishes. The wedding was simple, elegant and intimate, which is just what we wanted, Sybil and Daniel explained. Sybil walked down the aisle to All You Need Is Love, one of Daniels favorite songs. It was traditional, but we wanted to incorporate things that made it unique to us.

  • Breanne and Cole met at a country bar in Colorado. Cole was performing country music at the bar, and lucky for the both of them, Breanne agreed to go out that night after being dragged to the bar by friends. The couple ended up sharing a dance. Cole was home on leave, and would be deploying to Iraq in three days, but this made no difference to them both. They spent every minute of those next three days together. We got engaged almost instantly when Cole returned home, although we really knew we were going to get married about three hours after our first dance, explained Brianne. The couples wedding was just a continuation of the first night they met. It was all country. The wedding totally embodied us. they beamed. Since both Breanne and Cole live country style lives, Cole as a bull riding country music artist with Breannes career completely revolving around horses, they wanted the wedding to be country, rustic, and very western, yet still classic, as Breanne described it. And rustic and western it was. The dinner tables were decorated in golden yellow sunflowers and the guests drank out of small glass Mason jars. The sunflowers bright yellow tone against the dark wood of the barn-like venue provided the perfect compliment. Around the venue were bunches of pumpkins and bales of hay that helped create a natural country feel and was very much in season with a fall wedding. As if the leather jackets accompanied by a cowboy hat that the groom and groomsmen wore werent enough, beautiful horses grazed the premises. • brown leather and the plump orange pumpkins were the epitome of an October wedding. We wanted a fun, laid back wedding that was true to us and our lifestyle, Breanne and Cole described. The food, of course, was just as country as the wedding. The theme of the menu matched that of the dcor; Texas style barbecue. Guests were served brisket, macaroni n cheese, smoked chicken and, of course, what is a Texas style barbecue without corn bread? Since Breanne and Cole had decided that they wanted the wedding to be rustic and laidback with a touch of conventionality, they substituted cupcakes for cake. It was a fair substitution considering they had five different kinds of cupcakes. Breannes favorite DIY detail of the wedding was the guest book that Cole made. Cole makes chaps and custom leather, so he tooled our names and the wedding date into the cover. Another favorite DIY detail was the gifts the couple gave to the guests. I made three types of jam for favors and we got the custom spread the love labels from an Etsy designer, Breanne explained. Both couples contributing handcrafted elements made the celebration shine with love. There were so many great moments at this wedding, its really hard to pick just one! Breanne explained when asked what her favorite part of her wedding day was. Cole and Breanne decided that their most memorable moment was when Breannes father made a really touching speech at the reception. It meant a lot to the both of us, they said. Although there were many sweet and memorable moments at the wedding, one of the couples favorite moments was nothing less than hilarious. There was this one hilarious moment though, when Cole was under my dress trying to pull my garter over my cowboy boots, the bride stops to giggle. Coles nephew Blake, who was also the ring bearer, lifted my dress up over his head! He was looking under there with a very serious look on his face, they continue to laugh. The ring bearer went right to sleep after that episode. I guess that was enough education for one day! Breanne laughed.

  • What we at Wine Country Weddings Magazine love about Breanne and Coles wedding is how true the couple stayed to their lifestyle. There is no doubt that this couple is country and classy from the details on the brides authentic Texas Longhorn cowboy boots under her gown to the old, red rusted truck the wedding party lingered around for pictures. Breanne and Cole not only stayed true to themselves with the wedding theme, but also true to the season. The sunflowers and pumpkins are representative of the October month and the autumn colors capture the nature of that a wine country landscape lent to the celebration of love. Written By Chelsey Korman.

Wedding Details...1. Sunflower bouquets and rustic table number frames created a western, very simple look and feel to their wedding tables. 2. Only the most adorable cowboy and cowgirl at the ceremony, arent they cute? 3. Breanne made three different types of jam for guests and purchased labels off of Etsy. 4. The couple chose to have not only a cake, but cupcakes at their reception. 5. Menus wouldnt say country without the authentic brand at the top.

  • W hile Devon was styling a clients hair she was told by a regular patron that there was a guy she needed to meet. Devon decided that, Since I had done her hair for years at this point I knew she wouldnt steer me wrong, she explained. So, Devon agreed to meet Zachary one evening at a restaurant nearby to see a live jazz band. We sat and talked until the restaurant closed, listening to the sleepy jazz band that was playing. I knew immediately that this guy was a total catch, Devon described.

  • The couple began dating and two years later, Devon introduced Zachary to her grandfather. Just after they were introduced, her grandfather called Devons mother and told her that he wanted to give the couple Devons grandmothers wedding ring. The diamond had been in the family for 100 years. Shortly thereafter, Zach proposed in Devons childhood bedroom with a beautiful ring which had my grandmothers diamond tucked right in the center. The theme of the wedding was very similar to the engagement ring, classic and elegant, Devon described. I wanted our wedding to be truly us. When they found their romantic wine country wedding venue, they were awestruck. It encompassed all the elements they wanted for their wedding; natural surroundings, beautiful landscape and refined facilities. The property is so serene, with the sound of the leaves in the wind and the way the sun shines over the hills, Devon explained. Once they had found the perfect venue, all the pieces of the wedding began falling together. The bride described her dream wedding atmosphere as, soft colors, lots of flowers and candles. In one word: romantic.

  • Some of their favorite details were the hand-crafted fire place Devons father built and she and her mother painted. The fireplace, inspired by previous weddings where Devon had seen a fireplace behind the head table, was a detail that Devon couldnt leave out of their own wedding. I couldnt stop thinking about it, Devon confessed. The second inspiration, or obsession, that Devon refused to leave out was a stunning chandelier that hung from the tree just behind the ceremony. Devon thanks her mother and friends for the success of the dcor. They helped to execute the vision Devon had for the details of their wedding day; silver candelabras, silver trays for candles and silver antique earns filled with flowers decorated the lace table cloths. Typical of a wine country loving couple, Devon and Zach have a serious love for good food. We are big fans, they laughed. Thus, they selected food which was romantic and warm, just like the venue. We wanted gourmet comfort food. We told that to our caterer, they sent us the menu, and we never changed a thing! said the couple. The tables were filled with petite grilled cheese sandwiches, tomato soup sips, mini chicken pot pies and macaroni n cheese bites. Staying within the realm of warm and comfortable, the couple agreed to skip the cake. Instead, we had pumpkin chocolate bread pudding, mini cobblers and chocolate chip cookies and milk. All very fitting for an autumn wedding. One of moments that really stand out as my favorite moments would have to be the look on Zachs face as I walked down the aisle, Devon explained, when asked what the days most special moment was. I think he brought most everyone to tears. He was so filled with love and emotion. One of the personal details of this wedding that we at Wine Country Weddings Magazine love is also one of the couples fondest memories. After the ceremony, the wedding party and the bride and grooms parents went into the house where everyone made memorable and intimate tokens of well wishes toasting champagne. We will never forget some of the kind words our best friends spoke as they toasted

  • 1. Devon and Zach added elegant touches like this classic frame to welcome guests to the reception. 2. Not only are strawberries tasty and add to the playfulness of Devon and Zachs wedding, they also add vibrant color to the table. 3. Nothing says wine country like outdoor seating areas overlooking a vineyard. 4. The metallic silver candlebras, light pink roses, and lace decorated the table with the perfect amount of vintage and class.

  • to us, as well as our parents love and support, the couple explained. This idea takes an already intimate wedding and creates an intensified private experience. It is great for family members and the wedding party to feel included in this particularly personal part of the celebration. Zachary and Devon were able to create the perfect mixture of warm and welcoming. Every detail, from the food, to the venue overlooking rolling hills of sun-kissed vineyards, to their dog Henry, who was present and wearing a bow tie the entire wedding, exemplifies the irreplaceable love and affection these two have for one another.

Every girl has a dear friend who always remains close to their heart no matter time or distant apart. Nicole is that dear friend to me. Even though we met almost fifteen years ago while we were Nannies in France we have maintained a friendship that has flourished, and bond that is unbreakable. We stayed in touch initially through many handwritten letters and saved to visit one another as often as possible. Over the years our friendship, despite thousands of miles, has only grown stronger. So, when she asked me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding earlier this year I was truly honored to stand by her side as she stepped into her next chapter in life; being a wife. Here, I share snapshots of an enchanting Austrian wine country wedding from an American brides-maids perspective.

Johann and Nicole, like every modern couple, met on the internet. After many flirtatious emails, their first date was at a traditional caf where they joked, laughed and felt an immediate spark of romance. Nicole, a boisterous, fun-loving spirit found Johann to be the sensitive, sexy type of guy and they immediately started dating. Their courtship has been filled with romantic overseas trips to Dubai, Morocco and Greece; laughing daily at their silly inside jokes and spending cozy weekends together they feel more and more in love. Year after year, with each visit and Skype conversation it became apparent that Johann was the ideal match for Nicoles vivacious personality. After eight years of dating, Johann asked Nicole to marry him on her May 15th birthday and they decided to marry one year later. At the start of the wedding weekend, seeing the normally very reserved and shy Johann dress as a bear and sing and dance at their rehearsal dinner, I knew that there was nothing he wouldnt do for her, and that, he truly loved her with all his heart and soul. Witnessing their love grow stronger over the years made my participation in the wedding that more special.

They married in Styria, Austria, a well-known European wine region, close to the Slovenia border, in the romantic Ottersbach Castle. Surrounded with verdant hillsides of vineyards, the castle has become a favorite venue because of the modern amenities mixed with old-world charm. The castle property houses a library, displays of medieval arms and a vast art collection of portraits. While the couples were taking pictures the wedding party took a tour of the castle and were able to hear the history about the property and learn of its recent return to the original owners after being captured by the Hitlers regime. The family is now restoring the property to its former aristocratic ear of prestige and elegance.

In Austria, there are always two ceremonies; one for the church and one for the state. Usually the state one is known as the sentimental ceremony and most similar to an American ceremony. Thankfully, the skies parted and sun shone for the couple to marry outside in the castle gardens while a Jazz singer performed for the state ceremony. Wished well with an aisle of friends and family blowing bubbles the couple then left that ceremony and entered the church inside the castle and shared a religious ceremony as a Priest married them.

  • T H E C E L E B R A T I O NThis wine country destination wedding weekend was full of merriment. On Friday evening, everyone dressed in traditional folklore attire and enjoyed a traditional dinner filled with local sliced meats, cheeses and lots of wine. That evening the entertainment was provide by the bride and two friends, who are known as the Schatzweg Girls. The next day the couple married in a romantic castle in two separate ceremonies and had a reception filled with a Jazz band, a four-course meal, tearful toasts and a DJ that started spinning at midnight. The final day, everyone gathered outside and wrote well wishes on balloon and at once everyone released them and then said good-bye to the newly married couple.

There were so many details, but here are a few of my favorites. Every guest was welcomed with a customized bottle of wine. The night before the wedding, the evening ended with the guest singing a traditional folklore song to the bride. At the stroke of midnight the bridal party danced the Viennese waltz. There was a fun photo booth, well-wishing cards, goulash served at one in the morning and lastly, the couples mothers made homemade Austrian cookies as a late night snack.
